There is no way to exit the chat screen when in gameplay, so when you try and use spells or skills with the number button. When you hit a number on the key pad it sends it through the chat screen instead of applying it to your character, making it impossible to use the skill when you want to chat at the same time.

Ran into the same problem. I was unable to close chat .

Simply press "enter" again. It will close.

Or if you want it to close it after each message go to Options---> Game settings---> click off command prompt---> click apply

Then you hit enter to bring up the chat bar, type in your message and hit enter to send it. It will then automatically close the chat bar so you don't have to hit enter a third time to close it.

Or do what I do, panic and hit escape like it was my lifeline (in which case it sometimes is in game).
