and you dont need PS to get a 3D effect
i duplicate layer, then fill one layer all black (gallusian[sp?] blur) then put the black layer under the normal one. makes the first layer look like it has shadow ~ =3

but your still right to a certain degree, there are buttons on photoshop and paint.net (also free photo editing software) that make the thingy looky more 3d ><

o yea, and your editin' software might be sucky, but ur siggies arnt~! keep up da great work~!

it's actually pretty simple, i just take my outline ( which i draw in paint) and use the paint bucket tool (in paint.NET) to fill in the large areas, with an 'average' color.
then i go to my 'colors' window (in paint.NET) and change the +white and +black in the 'average color' .. adjust the opacity to 10 and run over the area i want to shade in/highlight over and over again
