Depends on what stats the fighter is. If your a str/spr fighter your gonna want to use a 1h and sheild. A fighter that has end in its free stats can use a 1h and sheild for aoeing, or a axe for fighting a little mobs of monsters. I just like the 2h sword cause of the looks at +9

Meh, Axe is always better than 2h in my opinion.
As for stats, its really hard to say, full STR and axe works wonders.
Then again if youre using a 1h and shield, youll never be able to make up the damage by going STR in your stat distribution. Might as well stick to one expertize. And by that I mean END/shield... but honestly strength works just as well.
