All i can say to you is that you should take care when upgrading, i mean you had the forewarnings that there is a chance that your weapon can break when upgrading...
I Didn't lose for certain, i upgraded to a +3 just fine...did i beat the evil system, or was i haxxing?

Seriously - who is the one FORCING you to upgrade ?
If upping was easy everyone would run around with +9 equips, then you be moaning because you can't have a "special item"
I love the enchant system, even tho I am the spoiler goddess!
Makes me laugh, grind grind grind, make some money and try again - or not - it is your choice.

Upgrading your weapon is like gambling, you take the risk of it all.
If you can't afford to lose money, don't gamble. :)

To everyone who think its uber simple to upgrade stuff. Word of advice.. it's like gambling. Gambling entails risk of loss. So does upgrading.
If you can't afford to upgrade and risk loss, DONT DO IT.

I boosted my shortsword to +2, and I found that a longsword +1 still does more damage in the long run.
I'm sure some new person would like a better weapon early on though.

well, i'm unlucky after all...
but i'm not telling other users NOT to upgrade...
besides, it's your choice if u want to upgrade your weapon or not.
yeah, it's risky... but when u lose your item, it's not the game's fault... the game already warned us that there's a possibilty that we can lose our item..
i lost my item 3x.. well, yeah i'm a little pissed off but i'm still not blaming the game for it...
i'm just unlucky, that's all... ehehe...

Hacker.. ;)
Upgrading is completely random. Though the amount of randomness seems to be directly proportional to the value of the item you are upgrading and also directly proportional to the level of pissed-offedness it will make you if it fails.

It is your fault that your weapon was destroyed! There was a fair warning thet said that there is a chance that your waepon would be destroyed. Also I like upgrading I have a +6 light bow, and i didn't get one failure. and with my fighter i have +6 long sword and a +4 broad sword. So deal with it!

Refine Probability
I think i got a way of getting +3 weapon using only 3 elrue!!u can use any material like Elix or Lix for higher upgrades using the same refining system!!. Ima do a minigraphic of when u r in the refining window, and what should u put ur elrue the 3 times u do it. if u have a new character n u want to upgrade start like this, or for other players (i have only tasted with my new character) *im like a newb lvl 21 High Cleric but hope this works for u it works for me 80% of the time i do it* and this is not a math system stuff i dont like math ><'. Ok so here is my Graphic>>>>>
Bm= box for materia
Bw= box for weapon
and if u wondering bout the other 3 boxes that are down idk about them o.o'
-----------------------------------Bm--------[Ur inventory]
------------------------------Bm-------Bm
-----------------------------Bm---Bw*--Bm
For third time use UPMA here->Bm-------Bm <-For first time use UPMA here
-----------------------------------Bm<-For second time use UPMA here
Bw* put ur weapon there.
UPMA= Upgrade Material.
- means nothing.
and if u dont get the upgrade in that order keep on using it like i said it works for me 80% of the time.
And if u have it already upgraded it lvl 3 keep using the same order hope it works for u ^^
If u have questions add me im Trax, Server=Teva.

its a chance thing
lucky is better than blessed and regular
all amounts to the server deciding whether you should have the upgrade
*hint - dont upgrade what u need at the moment
would hate to waste a strong weap to have to go back to using ur one before

This enhancing system REALLLLLY sucks...at least make it worth using blessed/lucky stones. I've had better luck with normal ones then those. I've broke more items using a blessed elrue then normal elrue and don't get me started with lix

First try i got my lvl 15 staff to +7. Yes it is luck but get over it. IT is a game and Guess what **** HAPPENS. Just because u are mad that ur weapon broke doesn't mean don't upgrade. It took me 8 tries to get a weapon to +6. IT is part of the game.

I totally gave up on enhancing. Broke 4 (!) weapons in CB just trying them to get them to level 3... It really is too harsh. Breaking should be something rare to happen, but it's very common. Like throwing a D20... 1 = +2 Lvl, 2 - 10 = +1 Lvl, 11 - 15 = Fail, 16 - 19 = Degrade weapon, 20 = break!
It rather seems 50% chance to break on fail. I think they nodged up the chance to break in CB, at least I got the feeling.
Degrading a weapon would be OK, still gambling and making high weapons rare, but less frustrating... So rather make it 50/50 degrading a weapon, throwing out the breaking

Upgrading is not that hard i got all my armor +4 right now after about like 20 trys i think they should keep the system the same its a game of chance and like they say if you dont have the money dont gamble.

the added damagefrom the enhancement is proportional to the weapons standard damage, or so i think
it does explainwhy i have a +6 magic staff with + 20 md anmd a +5 run wand with +24 or so md
and ive lost like 2 lucky elrues and replaced themwih reg elrues for te 0-3 part, and it worked fine, i seem to get it most of the time, o at least nothing happening if it fails...

weapons don't degrade...they have to make it hard to get + bonus on weapons
Otherwise the market would flood. No one would buy elrue/lix. No one would be there to collect and sell materials.
The economy would be in shambles. I think it may be too easy to get +6's from KQ. At least lvl 15 +6's. But it is a good teaser for people to want lvl 20, 30, ect +6's or higher. You feel so cool with that gowly you will always want one from then on.

omg yes the enhancing way kinda stinks but it get my adrenalin going. I just got my lvl 20 hammer to +7. I thought it was going to break so i hit the enhance button and left the room. I was so freaking happy to see it was still there. And yes teh glow is so cool on the weapons. And it wouldn't throw the game out of balance if they tweaked it a bit. I do think it is rediculous if the weapon breaks on first try to enhance. I think it should have a risk of breaking when it goes from 3-4.

It's all in the mind!...I say, lol. Not really sure, because when I TRIED to get a +9 weapon, I broke like...20 weapons and wasted more than 20s worth of stones. However, when I didn't really care and was trying seeing how far I could upgrade my staff, BOOM!...hit +9. I was like O.O, so it's really up to you whether or not you want to risk it.

I've once upgraded 4 green weapons, and all exploded on the first elrue :(.
I once managed to get an axe to +7, but from there is straight down to +0, after that it broke :D, the morale is don't let greed get over you.

I am not positive on how it works. As has been said already, and as you have been warned multiple times by the game itself, there is a chance your item will break. It stands to reason that if you cannot handle losing your weapon, don't enhance it.
I attempted enhancing 4 level 20 armors when I was level 22, and they all broke on first try... that wiped my money out completely. I almost quit at that time, but I didn't. I learned from it.
Maybe the engine has been tweaked since all the previous replies in this thread, but I have noticed that when I attempt to upgrade a cheap armor piece, I get 2 fails, then break on fail #3. I am usually able to get the item to +4 before failure #3, but it is frustrating to have wasted all that elrue and lix, and have nothing to show for it in the end.
I have a feeling that your level somehow plays into the enhancement algorithm. As in a level 20 player will likely have decent luck upgrading level 5 armor, but is likely to break level 20 armor.
Of course we all want level 35 +9 armor and weapons, but that is too greedy. Balance has to play a role in the game developer's decision on how to build the various chance engines. If getting better weapons and armor was easy, either by self enhancement, or by purchase, then the game gets boring when there is no more room for player development. (I.E. I have maxed out my weaps and armor... now what!?!?!? )
If the enhancement engine runs as I think it does, then as you get progressively stronger, and build up some bank, then it gets easier to enhance your items a little, but if you get greedy and start asking for +9's... you are sure to start breaking your stuff (and consequently griping about it).
The people who **** and moan about losing their stuff after they have been warned that it could happen are malcontents, and will never be really happy anyhow. There is no point in changing things to make it easier for them, then they will complain it is too easy and complain that "everyone has _________ +9, we need better equipment".
Bottom line -- enjoy the game as it is intended, recognize that the game is in beta testing -- not everything is perfect -- report bugs as you notice them, but if you are warned by the game that stuff will break, then you should expect it to occur -- it is obviously not a bug.

I like the challenge of getting to a +9. Again, for me its a relaxed form of upgrade and I won't actually try to upgrade a real weapon till I get a +9 newbie one made (less risk, with all the perks!) :D

I broke since i played Fiesta 1000000000000 Weapons xD And i dun really care, cuz i know the risk, but also want good stuffs xD
And if u pay only for upgrades, this game would be the worst game ever xD But so its nice. MAYBE 1~3 little higher chances to upgrade ^^

Doesn't get any simpler than that... weapons or money. If you aren't rich in both - don't bother. I'm telling you - it is better off buying from the lucky punks for cheaper prices than wasting time AND more money to get your own.

Here is another thing if u are poor. Upgrading a lvl 20 weapon to +7 and up is worth big money. SO u can either risk and possibly get rich or risk and end up poor. It all depends where u settle.
