I've been taking an art lecture at school this year and I wanted to get some feedback on my drawings :)
For the record no I am not obssessed with cherubs, I;ve never even draw them before. But after I decided I would try draw a cherub I found out I need to stick with the same subject until the end of the semester. That's the teachers method hehe. Well, it might get annoying drawing the same things but it got me trying out styles and methods I never tried before :)
Hope you like them ^^
I'll start off with the serious ones moving on to the abstract(we're building into it gradually) and last my project with cartoncin (thick coloured paper)

Well those are just some of my cherubs...I have more...and by the end of the semester I'm going to be drowning in cherubs >.< lol
Ps. sorry if some look faded and the colour isn't completely true to life, but the scanner changes them for me.

Oh-em-gee!!! These drawings are Ah-Maze-ING!!! My goodness Naomi, your just gifted. If I copied yours, mine would come out as the deformation of your drawings.

Nice job! It really shows that you can work on the same subject/topic multiple times and come up with new ways of displaying your work

Thanks guys so much :) and alicina I'm sure it wouldn't look deformed, I'm sure it would be very nice for you. Do you draw anything? I would love to see some of your work if you do :)
yes I think that's what the teacher is trying to get us to do, learn to be creative and get a particular topic to change in many ways. But lol it gets so annoying at times; "what am I gonna draw today...oh yeah a cherub again" lol ^^

I really like your shading techniques on the third cherub piece, that must have taken a lot of time! I also really, really enjoy the imagery in the last grayscale piece you've posted. I'm a big fan of art within art and symbolism. :)

Thank you celtic:) actually the third one took me the longest. 3lessons (2hours each lesson so 6hours total) But the last lesson I spent it continuing the background (it has darker shading now)... but I must admit I spent the last lesson talking a bit :P But the teacher told me each leaf, each feather ecc needs to be a sperate entity and I wasn't doing that with the other ones. So with that one I shaded each and every feather part individually.
It's really amazing, one student in the class picked the picture on the ceiling (cause the lesson is held in a church cause there was so much sculptures and architecture to chose from). So he spends the whole lesson looking up copying the ceiling
And the last one. I'm not so good at symbolism, I've never really tried it. But I misunderstood the teacher cause he said he wants a background with a composition like it's telling a story. So I tried to make meaning behind it. when I went to uni he said he just wanted normal shading hehe. But i was quite happy with how it came for me.
Did you ever read about art history and such? I don't really know much about the history of art. I had it two years ago at school, but I must admit it was boring cause she would dictate and we would just write notes. I really should try and go to more art exhibitions though.
Thank you very much again :)

Wow thats a lot of time on that one piece. I have one sketch that I've been working on for several months...it was originally a school assignment but it turned into a personal piece. As I meet people that influence my life I add something to the drawing that I learned from them. Its taken about 3 months so far. >.<
I know more about symbolism than I do art history itself but I have studied it before. I've taken maybe 2 courses on art history, and symbolism (which varies culturally) is just a personal interest. For example, the spiral (which is considered one of the oldest and most prolific symbols throughout the world) carries many different meanings. In China it may represent the sun, it is also known to represent life and death (rebirth), and the triple spiral common in Celtic cultures is thought to represent the 9 month pregnancy period. It also, in Wiccan religion can represent magic, or spirit and the direction of the spiral changes its meaning. A novice walking down a path may represent someone who has just started their spiritual journey. I have a tarot card depicting that exact scene, he's holding several scrolls and has reach a crossroads in his learning. There are several magical/spiritual creatures (dragons in this case) who are hiding in the background waiting to see which path the novice chooses.
I think, depending on the subject, knowing a history of its origins (in this case I would guess the origins of the Christian religion...which can actually lead you back into pagan religions that it was based off of) can help you incoporate a story into the picture. The use of symbolism and a knowledge of the events occuring both in the past and the present are found in many of the art pieces that have survived the centuries. However, I am rambling...so I'll stop now :p

Sorry for replying so late. But yest wasn't a good day for me. I had to spend the afternoon in bed as this dizziness doesn't wanna go away. The thing is I have three seminars if I miss more than 1hour i need to start it from the beg, and I missed my hour cause I will yest and had to leave early. Have to just try and get through tomorrow.
Wow celtic. It seems like quite an interesting topic to learn about. And yes knowing these symbols will help aperson very much in adding symbolization into art. You said you are working on a picture. I would love to see some of your art work as I don't think I've ever seen any of your drawings.
And thanks again Df, very sweet of you ^^
