Serves as the prologue, not finished yet.
The first update always comes to http://solsticeplayer.prophpbb.com/ before I post it here. The fansite will work as my workbench and back up in case something happens.
Chapter-size will be estimated to ~2k, my standard.
Later on the readers will be able to decide the protagonists fates through a poll. (Will have impact on the story, but nothing groundbreaking really in my opinion.)

The gentle winds blowing in the forest felt different. Could be because he have been away from a crowded area for some time now.
“...Annoying.”, Kion said and looked down on the ground. He looked down to see a broken branch under the left foot. Kion took his time walking towards Brynhilde, a modest town where people lived. Seat for two guilds and a place where most people were accepted.
Kion was looking at the dagger hanging under the belt for a second before looking up again on the path he was walking .
“And that too, I guess. Have to do it after going to Seras… Heh, can‘t believe I will follow my sister‘s advice after all to meet that person.”
Each part of the feet were weighted differently to the other as an experiment and practice.
With so few herbs left it was better focusing on this over relying on the technique to render himself invisible to the naked eye.
This part before reaching the gates to Brynhilde was called Trisects. It was less thick with vegetation than the areas after it when you entered from town, but the wild life was far from small even then.
The difference was how less aggressive wildlife was usually around populated areas like Brynhilde.
Kion passed small black balls while he was practising. As it looked like; they didn’t wake up from their nap.

“Mhm… what was it sister Seras said again about these things? ”, Lis said.
The girl was sitting on a small pillow on the ground and was looking at a huge green thing growing larger and smaller under a rumbling sound she might call a snore. It was large as a house, or close to it. The ears were rounded, size of a door and had a heart-shaped purple tail.
The animal’s head was resting on a log. From the looks of it the tree was broken recently.
Lis removed the sack she kept on her back next to the green thing, brought out the staff she kept wrapped in a clothe and poked the green furry skin twice. No reaction.
“Wake up!”, Lis said and started to poke harder when it showed no reaction.
“I wanted to ask you something… please?”
The green animal stopped its snoring for a moment, smacked the lips and rolled over to the opposite side and started over.
“Mah! Fine! I will ask someone nicer.”, Lis said.
She brushed off dirt on the purple dress, looked up at the snoozer again with the angriest face the acolyte could think of after she stood up again.
“… You are a mean a furball, a big mean one with rough hair. You know that?”
It got straining to keep one eye brow lower than the other one, so she dropped it.
Lis grabbed her bag and picked up a yellow book embedded with red and blue gems on it.
The front said Illusion Quake.
She did like the green animal and turned her back before opening the second page.
Each of the three volumes’ content every new Acolyte got was drilled in by Sister Seras to make sure they learnt the importance of their existence under guidance of Jureah; Goddess of mercy, and other things Lis recall now and then.
Most of it didn’t sound like what she thought the acolyte was suppose to be. Though, those thoughts were squashed when she asked others.
The acolyte returned the book. Even reading the book over and over again didn’t make any sense out of what the instructor always nagged about regarding.
“Mah, stupid Sister. She never tells us how to do anything, always going round and round about anything she says… I don‘t want to read about places, I want to go outside Trisects! Always bossing around, do this, don‘t say anything if isn‘t nice. Never go outside Trisects without a squire or equal, never think ill of others even when they are bad. Always be grateful…”
Lis tried to copy the instructor’s voice and tone while reciting each thing she could grab from her head floating by at the moment.
The words ‘To summon the Illusion Quake you must learn how to protect’, didn’t tell her anything. Similar words were printed on the same page in the other books, ‘Spiriting for dummies’ and ‘How to heal wounds, beginners’ introduction’.
The actual titles were ‘Spirit’ and ‘Minor Heal’, but some words were crossed out and replaced by more blunt statements written by a steady hand.
She tucked them back in her sack and glanced a moment at the snoring creature, still dreaming about what a big meanie could dream about.
One thought hoped it involved water, some firewood, vegetables, a recipe book, and the biggest pot anyone could think of. She almost drooled at the thought.
Others went between who she could ask about what the book meant about ‘protect’ and why there aren‘t any other acolytes here in Trisects today.

“How annoying… Why, why am I so weak? I curse you my sister for this! Having to go to that woman shows how pathetic I really am-”, Kion said while shaking his head, “Even after training myself for the task I have get help from an acolyte. Can‘t believe I am as weak as those servants!”
He muttered those words over and over while walking close to places where animals might sleep. The only thing Kion could look forward to after returning a settlement was to change these worn out clothes.
It was something about using new clothes after a long time. A month? Two? It was hard to keep track how long it was between each visit in Brynhilde. Coming and leaving quick was appealing for some reason in his mouth.
Only buying what was out of necessity, absolutely no spare clothes. It was was enough with one set for Kioniya Banther. No point travelling with burdens.
The gentle breeze felt different a moment. Kion closed his eyes when he sensed something was moving around him in circles. Could this one have gone on while he was busy with himself?
“… Don‘t try hide from me, show yourself now! I know you can hear me.”
No answer.
Kion picked up a pebble and threw it behind him. A faint squeek and light tappings ran from the impactsite.
“Since when did small animals get curious like that. I wonder why…”, Kion said.
There was no point in pondering about trivial matters like this when Brynhilde was close.
=<><><><><><><><><><><><>=
“How can you say you don‘t know how to use Illusion Quake!? You‘re mean!”
“How many times do I have to tell you, I am a squire. How am I suppose to know how to use a healer’s technique?!”
“Mah, you know, you know! I saw how you attacked that slime without being close. You just don‘t want to tell a girl how to use it.”
“Uhm, miss… that‘s Attraction. It‘s noth-”
“Don‘t try tricking me by saying it is something else. Squires can‘t do anything from a distance! Doesn‘t matter what you say, call it or make it look different. That‘s Illusion Quake, you big meanie!!”
The squire sighed. He rised from his sitting position and picked up the shield.
Lis’ face had grown a darker red shade during the argument. It had taken some time to find someone who didn’t try to ignore her after asking the question.
“I have to go now. Seeing there was nothing I could help you with.”, the squire said and covered his face with the helmet’s visor.
“… Hey, wait you didn’t help me!“
“Sorry, miss; can‘t hear anything when it is down. Good luck with your problem.”
He waved the hand and pulled out a red string from a paper. The squire’s texture fainted away until nothing of him was left.
“Mah! Men…”, Lis said. “So unhelpful when he said he could help.”
She felt like she couldn’t go on now. Her stomach had been demanding a snack ever since she met that big meanie with rough hair.
The blanket went out again on the grass again. Lis sat down on it and pulled a brown package and unwrapped.
“At least something that isn‘t mean to me. Hope you taste good, veggie-and-lipigham-sandwhich”
She was about to take the first bite when she heard something from behind.
“Yaaa-aarh… Yarh?”
The acolyte slowly turned around to see a small brownish tan animal with a heart shaped tail and goofy-looking eyes.
“… And what do you want, little poku? I‘m busy eating.”
Lis narrowed her eyes when the poku crawled towards her knee.
“Yarh! Yarh… yarh?”
“Talk instead of saying ‘yarh‘… Hey, why do you have a bump on your forehead?”
The poku looked like it had been crying when it was sitting in front of the acolyte with its head looking down in the blanket.
She patted on her knee.
“Here, here. Come now, no one will hurt you.”
The poku looked like it hesitated for a moment when it looked up before jumping up in the lap. Lis patted it and resumed what she was going to do. It went to slept the moment after the hand stopped petting.
Lis put both her hands against sandwich and muttered a few words.
“I thank those made this sandwich possible, but not the instructor for putting those balm leaves in the otherwise perfect snack, and the lipig for making it tasty.”
