jojo is the only one that actually follows this rule... so...
nya... changing size so that ppl can read -^^-
in your mind cut the picture/siggy that you are making in to 9 equal pieces .. so that it looks like a tic-tack-toe board

unlike ticktacktoe however, when making-editing-drawing-ect a picture, you do not aim for the center. in fact, you AVOID IT~! =3
Sure, there can be some things in the center of the siggy, just, the focus should not be in the center. like in this siggy:
http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh173/shiningkittenfur/reality.png
the center DOES contain stuff, but the focus of the piccy is on the right. while the text is on the left.
this also touches upon 'balancing/balanced pictures'
When making a picture, keep in mind that ALL of the focus of the piccy should not be in one corner/side. I usually put the focus of the siggy on one side, then put text on the other.
text, is something i have found to be very 'heavy' in terms of siggy making. in the picture above, the piccy seems a little unbalanced due to the large amount of text at the left. ~.~
Now.. another example:
these are the eyes of a random anime girl i cut out. the eyes are the focus of the piccy. the 'I LIKE COWS' is supposed to represent text. and yes, i do like cows
http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh173/shiningkittenfur/ruleofthirds2.png
each pair of siggy/text is supposed to represent a simple siggy. notice how the first one is completely centered, the second one is unbalanced, favoring the left, and the last one the best one because it not only follows the rule of thirds, but also balances out the focus of the piccy (the anime eyes) with the text
I hope this helps ^^;
any questions? just ask~ ^^
