which class is best for a newb?

Cliche answer, but it depends on what you enjoy. People have suggested this, and I think you should try it. Try all of the classes until level 20ish (give or take a few levels). You might even want to try each class up to level 30-40. My first character is a cleric, and all I though I use the cleric, it levels up really slowly. When I made a fighter, it leveled up like three times as fast. Maybe I enjoy being a fighter more.
Anyway you won't know what fits your needs until you try them all out.
