I guess I'm getting old, but the whole Net Lingo thing is really getting to me. When someone I'm grouping with is conversing with me through text and saying things like "I pwn teh mobs" I just hake my head. I get some of it like "lol" or "brb" because it's quick. But "Teh" instead of "The"? They're the same length, you're using all the same letters, you're just spelling it wrong. It looks retarded. Does anyone else feel this way? I'm sure people don't, I have a feeling I'm in the minority on this. But the whole communication thing as a whole confuses me. If we're not dumbing down our speech in on-line games, we're using a team speak option. Which is kind of understandable I guess, but if we want to talk to people in our games, why do we text with our phones? Why not call the person? Nope I'm gonna use my phone to text and my computer to talk. And in either case if I'm texting I'm going to use a broken caveman dialect of mispelled words and abreviations. So i'm gonna put the real hurt on myself and see how you guys feel about. I'm sure I'm gonna get hazed by haters for this, but I just don't get this.

"Teh" is actually, and I am a victim of this, a misspelling half of the time. It happens if you type the really fast without looking at your keyboard or message to edit it. I admit to using it a few times and I doubt many use it on purpose, but if they do, /smacks forehead.

Some of the net lingo is really out there and pisses me off to no end. Pwn, I use a lot when joking around with friends. Though "Owned" is much cooler for my style. 8)

I agree, usually if you see a typo in my talk, it's just that I type to fast and hit enter quickly. Most people using l337 speak are young and it annoys the hell out of me as well. Just talk people. Some slang peppered in here and there is alright in my book, but leave the rest out of it. As they used to do in Fullhouse, *scissors, point, thumb backward* Cut it out!! lmao

i du not untrstand da ppl hu use dis typ of specking. it rly gits on my nrvs.

When I see that..I always ask the person if English is his or her first language. It usually results in me being flamed, illiterately.. but it's fun.

Of course, it's always "ITZ A FREE CONTRY I CAN TLK HOW I WONT" or "HU DYED N MADE U GOD?" or something of that sort. :3

Ah! It hurts my brain!*spontaneous combusts from the speak*
Seriously though...Just trying to read what some people say at times, does give me a headache...Geez. Every now and then I do use a few though, when amongst gamer friends. Lol, pwnt, or owned, or our favorite, Fail(meaning You Fail Life). Then when in casual chat, a few words I do use like meh and crazehness...Due to certain chat programs

If you play MMOs, I'd be frightened if you DID NOT use such lingo, Zen. ;p

Today (or rather an hour ago) someone said something like.

"lol i take tu ur items u ok but i no moeney 2 by the spell know???"

it was that horribly. I was like, WHAT in the WORLD are you trying to say??????

If you don't speak English, DON'T try to abbreviate like our childish morons! DD:
If you do speak English, DON'T TEACH THEM HOW. DDD:

Well, the first thing that comes to my mind; not all folks here speak English as their first language, and they learn "leet-speak" or other slang online from other MMORPG or MMOG players. Many of those player are (demographically) 14 year old boys. 'Nuff said?

Second thing I think of is the speed/brevity/efficiency triad. Often you are typing in fields of a limited/defined space, they may "time out" if you aren't quick, and you may be multi-tasking to beat the band. You may well be fighting multiple mobs, chatting with a couple of friends, trying to coach a n00b, and posting on the forum all at the same time. Ever written a long post on the forum, editing it and thinking carefully as you went along, only to hit "submit" and get the "your connection has timed out" message? Don't you just HATE that?

Then there's folks like me that try to convey a feeling or a sense of themselves thru using lil variances and simulations of accents or pronunciations. We tend to make things up as we go along :P~ Watch out! We'll be the next generation of epic authors!! ::thinks to herself that it's probably wishful thinking::

Just as slang has changed the English language, so will online chat change EVERY language. My suggestion is: Get used to it! Grow a thicker skin. Don't sweat the small stuff! There was a time when we had to rely on the printed word alone to communicate our most complex sentiments. At least now we have emoticons!!!!

I think the key is to always give the other guy the benefit of the doubt. Trust they didn't mean things to sound as bad as they sometimes do, when read as a cold text. And rest assured that most folks actually DO desire to communicate clearly and truthfully. Call me PollyAnna.

Happy hunting!! And good luck on keeping all your text colloquialism-free!

;) Wink

I'll admit I will use words like "dun", "teh", "Haii haii!" stuff like that. But I also know there is a time and a place to be funny and to be serious. For some people its how they know how to talk and for others its just to be silly. Who knows you maybe talking to someone who doesn't know how to spell words properly at all. I for one know some words leave me going "Grrrr!!!"

Everything you say is true, Winnk. Generally, we all accept their inability to speak/spell (the ones who are supposedly fluent in English.) But we secretly loathe it and wish we could enforce literacy :3

I am not downing on those who don't speak English very well. I commend them for trying to learn it just to communicate, cause those of us who have English as a first language don't do crap to try to learn theirs. (Believe me I would if I had the opportunity. The only language offered at any local college or school is Spanish.)

But those who are given the chance to take French, Korean, German, Italian and all other languages.. have no excuse not to attempt.

Heh, I actually only started saying those types of words when I started playing Flyff about two years back. Ive been playing MMO's for the past say...Seven years, starting on Planetside, Everquest, and Ultima. Its rare yes, but there are few out there. I mainly talk on Ventrillo when gaming, so the need of such words to be used it not as much for me.

It was quite bad about two days ago, when I was sitting outside town and answering questions from other players...Someone came up and said this, I quote, "Hai, wut spail es tat uzed fur buff". Took me a few moments to try to understand the person wanted to know about buffs...Gah.

Yes..there is a time for seriousness and silliness. In general I am always trying to spell correctly and structure my sentences grammatically correct. Like on the forums here. But when talking to friends, you sometimes have to be quick in conversations in a guild or party, and especially in team events like KQ. You gotta abbreviate and type relatively fast ^^;

But in my opinion there is no excuse as to why some people abbreviate every single word.

I've never understood why some people say "mi" in the place of both me AND my.
Like, "Mi and mi dog went to the store." What sense does that make? Other than the I is closer to the M.

slice n' diced

It not the leet-speak in its simplest form that bothers me, it is the crap they seemingly spew out as if they weren't even trying. If they can't speak english then don't use the damn abbreviations! It only makes it harder to understand!

And since when should we have to live in an online community where people go

hI, i m 5p33kIn' l337. 5inc3 I m, I PR0848LY w0uLDn'7 U23 PR0p3R 3N9li5H h3r3 lIK3 N0W, 8U7 7hI5 i5 4 3X4mpl3 0F iDi075.

Leet-Speak is not a necessary form of communication. If you are hard-pressed for chat time then don't chat so often, or have your group slow the pace.

It is not small stuff to sweat over - it is large stuff. Chatting is a real big area in MMORPGs, especially since they are supposed to be RPGs, a lost aspect to more than (large percentage here) the MMO community.

I'm gonna sweat over it as much as I need to. People shouldn't have to, no matter what their natural language is, speak with numbers, speak with 2 damn letters missing from a word, or type for that matter.

No matter what anyone says, no matter how immpossible it seems, Nerria is fighting bad typing for life!

4 da wiin hme dog lyk 4 reel!!!1!!

EDIT: Note, there is a place for abbreviations and the like. But general chatting, which is where most of this crap occurs, no sense whatsoever.

QUESTION: Does anyone else besides me find it difficult to type like that, or is it just me?

ROFLMAO I'm a "woman of a certain age", who very recently had to start using reading glasses. Leet-speak makes me squint and it takes my brain a minute to realize I have to shift gears and decipher the code.

But that's the point, isn't it? The whole point of it is to grab your attention. It just shouts "LOOK AT ME!!" huh? I mean, what else do you expect from developmentally delayed prepubescent mammalians (later destined to become some semblance of Homo Sapiens)?

I rather enjoy the sport of "Deconstruct the Construct" in MMOGs. Gives me something to do while I grind.

Lol, well, I guess it is a matter of personal preference then. Whatever floats whoevers' boat -- I prefer to keep my filters on Guild, Whisper, and Party though. I don't have time to decipher archaic codes when I could be having a laugh in guild chat.

It's really hard for me to type that way xD;;;

I have to think "Now if I were a nublet, how would I spell it?"

I also despise the "noob v newbie" thing.

Noobs are ANNOYING BRATS. Newbies are just new to the game. But people don't use Newbie when referring to anyone, YOU WILL ALWAYS BE A NOOB/N00B NO MATTER WHAT YOUR LEVEL IS. -___-;;;;

Not all of us are so lucky as to have the time zone of the majority of players, nor the leisure time! Not everyone has the great good fortune to learn English as a mother tongue. I'm just trying to encourage tolerance and benevolence, as pertains to the attempts of others at communication.

I wasn't offered a formal education in many languages, but I did seek out those who could assist me in learning what I needed to know (on an informal basis). My "job" is in medicine (not a job, but a calling, hence the quotes), and it is best for my clients if I can communicate in even a rudimentary way. It puts them more at ease. They understand that I value their culture and also value them as people. The fact that I even TRY to learn their language builds a certain level of trust. And I find them, more often than not, to be very forgiving of my grammatical errors.I admire their attempts at communication in English just as much.

It isn't easy to put yourself out there when you feel your command of the language isn't perfect. It has been compared to appearing naked in front of strangers. Have a small bit of compassion please folks!

I DO get it about the leet-speak, and the gold farmers having their very poorly translated macros blaring out at us all the time. That feels like a perverse kind of torture at times, I know it does! But let's please not lose that warm and fuzzy feeling we (native English-speakers) get when we notice someone making the effort to communicate to us in our mother tongue!

Edited for spelling and grammar, 'cuz I know you'll look!

No one is putting down people who attempt to speak English at all. What we are putting down, however, is those children who pretend it is the coolest thing or the only way to type.

They do not try. They just don't care. If you ask them, their repsonse is "its ezier 2 tlk lyk dis". No it is not, it takes more concentration to talk like that and doesn't help you in life any way.

People whoa re foreign and try speaking English such as "Hi I are not American be friend please?", I have all the kindness towards. At least they make an effort and/or use proper spelling as best they can and know how to.

Anyone that uses abbreviations is not attempting to speak english, they are attempting to speak the general language of MMOs, which is Blaaaah speak.
They pick up "plz, 2, u, mi, r" and think it is proper, when it is not.

If you want to get somewhere playing an English based MMO, then make an attempt to learn it. If you don't have the time to learn it, why the hell are you playing a game? It would be MUCH more beneficial to spend your time studying another language than burning your language away on an MMO.

Wiink, your argument of time and learning a language fails at that point alone. Don't feel like I am picking on you either. I feel where you stand at, however, the argument doesn't hold up the least bit.

Yea, Winnk. that's what my previous.. previous post was all about.

If others attempt to communicate with my language, I know they will feel better if I attempt to communicate in their language.

I know a few phrases in various languages, and can say "I don't speak very good ____" in about 7 different languages lol.

I hope to be able to learn the basics of as many languages as possible before I am completely "out of the nest" ^^

Wow, vehemance...*sniffs*...so thick I can smell it, burns my nostrils too!

Anywho, I have played many upon many an online RPG, some actually involved roleplaying. Others, blatanly disregarded it and should have dropped the initials from its "genre" claim. A couple of the games I played had a minimal contingent of roleplayers and we took upon ourselves to create our own roleplaying section and brought others along as well to join in the fun.

On the language thing...I grew up in the Army and was in the service myself. So far, I have been to Germany, S. Korea, Japan, Kuwait and Iraq. I never had the time nor patience to actually learn the respective languages, but I did try to learn simple things to get me by. Such as, hello, goodbye, how are you, I am good/bad...I also went out of the way to learn the bad words so I knew when I was being crapped on. An example of why I would do such a thing: In South Korea I went to this same place to eat almost every week, 3-4 times a week. It was owned by an elder and her eldest daughter of around 30ish...The owner would always look nice and spoke so well mannered and sweet. Made me feel good and I would always smile at her and tell her to have a good day in her language and be on my way. One day I took a friend with me to show him the place, because the food was outstanding. When we left, he told me she was cussing me out and crapping on Americans and this and that...not cool, but hey, what can I do about it. Back on topic...
I abhore the leet speak, it is hard to read most of the time and I find it retarded, if I wanted to dechiper something I'd do it for the government.

I'm pretty sure the original game guide I looked at wasn't in English. While these aren't any of my written languages, I think it was in Mandarin Chinese, although it could have been anything from Korean to Japanese. The game progression and the "feel" of it is, to me, quite distinctly of the Oriental persuasion. I feel circles and spheres.

As far as my "argument" not holding up, I look forward to concrete examples of what you mean . . . .

There is a Chinese version, and probably Korean version of this game. This version is hosted on an natively English speaking server.

You're argument is more or less implying that, saying if you don't have time to learn a few simple spells such as Hello, Goodbye, How are you?, Thanks, then feel free to use whatever you feel like.

I am simply stating that you could be spending your time better cracking a book and learning those small words to enhance your and others' gaming experiences ten fold. As opposed to spending time on a game where you are in an atmosphere of people speaking in crude and inneffective langauge every minute.

I don't really see why we have to go so far into foreign speakers, since they are hardly the problem. The problem, blindly to you, (because you say they just don't speak English well), is immature kids who don't give a seconds care what they write.

I never once spoke like that so I cannot understand how they think but I imagine they are just taking the "free speech" too far.

Seeing as, from multiple responses of "Why can't you use some proper words for once?", the response is "itz free speach nub i can do wat i want so stfu".

Again, don't feel that I am hating on non-American speakers, the actual problem IS American speakers as the larger majority seems to not think about what they write.

Foreign speakers are a lot more reliable in terms of language to language connection than most of the people I have seen spamming general chat.

roflmao It isn't the language that you have a problem with, Nerria! You got a problem with the babies!!!!!

If I could count on one hand the number of times I've heard this one, I'd have 4 thumbs!

Until they come up with a reliable way to check ID online, you are going to have this problem. And they'll always let preteens in. AND chronological age won't always be a reliable indicator of behavior anyway, so . . . .

I'm now formally retiring from this thread. This is one nobody can win!

True that, and as I stated in my first post... the idiotic children ARE the problem I have as many do...

Our whole argument was pointless. Lol...

And age is not a determining factor on how people act... I am only 17... I know many younger people who behave in a much mature way than others. It is not 'babies' as you call them, it is just maturity level. No need for an age check because as I said, age has little to do with maturity in the online world at least.

Although I could say that I've seen adults acting worse in real life as well - though at a certain point you eventually mature up a bit. Though saying preteens are the true problem is not enough, because that is a massive generalization which I'd be strongly against.

I'd also be strongly against ways to check online ID, because that will just kill off internet anonymity altogether. Although that would kill off a load of certain people because they are exposed now - being protected behind a screen won't stop those really immature people from acting rude.

Ugh, such a sensitive debate area. I can't really choose sides because looking at it both ways puts it on a neutral scale... as with most things. Gotta hate that. x.x

And yes, nobody can win this. Nobody ever wins a debate because deep inside the other person always thinks they are right. Especially online. Although it is senseless, it is always fun to have a nice argument/debate. See you in the other corners of the forum then, good luck. =)

Leet-Speak! I couldn't remember what the hell it was called. I went on-line last night before I wrote this post and typed in Net Lingo, and there's a site devoted to it called Net Lingo so I just posted it as such. The real problem with Leet-Speak is the fact that in most cases they aren't saving anything by typing that way. When half of their "language" is nothing but mis-keyed words anyway. And I know there has been some replies as to some of this being honest errors or persons from other countries just trying to communicate. that's fine. But the players who talk this way intentionally need to be smacked with a yard stick or something. There was a post describing Leet as a way of getting a person's attention because it stands out...well yes it does, but I don't think that's it's true origins. It seems pretty obvious it came from language filters blocking copyrighted names or blocking foul language. People had to find a way to "beat" the system and we were blessed with LEET! ugh.

As this has turned out to be multi-racial game I thought it would be a good idea to have some kind of "net lingo" that we could all understand but NOT the above stuff already discussed. THAT does my head in! I don't usually mind typing full/proper English being a typist to trade but in the middle of monster bashing it is a bit of a bore..very time consuming....oops....lost my concentration...am dead...again! LOL! Being a Scot I don't normally speak proper English. It's more like Konata says...we shorten the sentenses. When chatting with people in a forum or with strangers etc., I use proper English to be polite...otherwise they just don't know what I am saying...and that is just between Scots and English! LOL! Although it is a game...it would be nice to be able to speak to other people of whatever race but learn the basics of all other languages JUST TO PLAY A GAME is a bit OTT 4me! (couldn't resist - LOL!) I do think it is unfair to expect all other races to learn English while we are too lazy too bother to learn any other! English is one of the hardest lingos to learn. I know it has been ried and failed....but surely someone could come up with a NET LINGO for these games! Where are the people from MENSA when you need them! Is there even ONE plays these games?

MENSA players? This is the last place they'd be found. This is the lower end of the gene pool in life as far as I care. Between the slaughtering of the English language and its offspring, I've found little in the line of any intelligence at all.

Reading the regular "Help me!11!11!?1!" threads on the boards here is like watching a kid with cut out boxes that have triangles, circles, and squares. And there's the kid trying to shove a round peg into the square hole. "Why won't the square peg go in the round hole?!11!1". Well.. it's kinda obvious why but to the mind of the person they're still to young, mentally, to understand why.

And for those wondering what MENSA is, take all the people in the world. Now take the top 2% smartest among everyone. That's MENSA.

My dad was a MENSA, but unfortunately I was adopted.
