View Full Version : Mage - Fun or Frustrating?

Okay, I'm kind of sitting here trying to decide what to do. This is my first day in Fiesta. My initial character was a fighter that I took to level 8, but I decided that Fighter was a bit boring for me. I play FFXI as my main MMORPG, but enjoy playing here in my spare time, so I figured that relying on dungeon groups wasn't really what I wanted to do.
So, I thought about a mage. I really like my mage, but I have read a TON of gripes about how mage is terrible to solo with. That got me interested, and I read the other class forums, and well, all four classes complained about being horrible soloers, with the exception of cleric, who really also appears to kill slower than any of the other three.
I come to you, Mage forum, for assistance. Is taking a mage up in levels a bad idea? Am I going to regret it at level 30?

I was in same boat when I first started, but I like Mage. I am going to keep it as my class. Seems to me though that maybe the intent is to party later on...to utilize all classes strengths as whole collective instead of alone, but that is merely an opinion of mine at this time. Try it out and discard, the beauty of Beta...

That's what I was starting to think, that they're trying to encourage partying up to accomplish fast exp rates. I mean, since none of the four classes seem to be able to boast excellent solo efficiency, it'd make sense. Cleric seems to (of course) have the highest survivability, but their lack of offensive abilities seem to lead to marathon battles.
As a result, from what I've read, it all comes out in the wash, so to speak. Where a mage can down a monster in a matter of a couple of seconds, they spend a lot of time resting. A cleric can heal itself, thus reducing the need to rest, but the battles are much, MUCH longer. That seems to suggest to me that in the end, it all evens out.
Anyone else have any opinions?

chronomantique, I like how you wrapped that up.
I also happen to agree with that extremely intelligent post (ever notice how people you agree with are immediately labelled as intelligent?).
And yeah, it seems to me that not only are the classes designed to work in conjunction (two versions of a tank, two versions of a projectile fighter) with one another, but that the nerf on xp in groups is intended to be made up for with a fast throughput of xp due to higher amounts of mobs killed.
Can't really offer much more than I've said elsewhere which is "Mages are Elite and you can't use a melee mentality to win a magic fight". Also known as bringing a knife to a gunfight if you follow the logic.

I'm pretty new to Fiesta but I love to have my character as a mage. Quite easy to attack other creatures, very powerful spells I just love magic :D.

I have never played a Mage before this game. People say that Mage is broke in this game and if it is, so be it. As far as I am aware you can get by decently wiht it being "broke"....Now, imagine when they "fix" it....

Theyr Broke meaning do low damage for a Mage but receive alot of damage in return and are quite hard to solo with.
I was if i remember correctly i was about lv 33 and needed 5-6 hits to kill a monster, while casting those spells at about spell №4 the monster was in close, doing alot of damage so i had to retreat and cast one more spell , stopping i was getting hit again, then run => heal and hit again.
Thats too long for a mage to kill a target i'd say. Usually in other MMO's mages kill a target in 2-3 hits and have much better range. Ah yes i didn't mention that the range here is kinda sucky too right?
So eventually i quited.
P.S. Received a invitation to be a CB Tester at Secret of the Soltice so i'll try that out for time being, if its not worth time i'll get back to good old Cabal Online :p

I'd play Cabal but they won't let us North American players play, Euro only.

I dont know about later on, but my mage is level 17. It nukes everything. everything i level on dies before it gets to me.

I am now lvl 24, I invested in Scroll making and potion making. My method is not for the impatient. I refuse to kite therefore I use a hell of a lot of potions. I mainly grind/farm green mobs until they turn grey then move along to the next. As a potion/scroll maker I have a healthy surplus of essential materials in my storage. It may take me longer to level, some would argue. I level at a reasonable pace and end up with plenty of materials to 1) use and 2) sell. Also if the green/yellow mobs are dropping rings or what not, the more the merrier!!! Sell those too when you can not use them. I usually give them to party members (Friends) so that they can better help the group....

Mage is a Thinkers class. you actually have to move around a bit and stratigize.
My advice is that all mages learn to kite, even if it's not they're main strat., they can do it in a pinch. i don't like kiting all that much, but i hate dying even more. So i kite, and i MMspam, and i die every so often. but that really is what the game is about?

Even with kiting you're paper, and weak paper at that. I'm trying to find something to quell my ever growing boredom now, as I refuse to play fiesta until something's done to fix mages, or at least make getting groups easier.
For those that say "Get a group", lets see you get a group. It takes -forever-. You can hardly get them because it seems like -nobody- wants to group, ever, unless you're a bloody cleric and then people flock to you like flies to a dumpster, but then you don't -want- to group because you're the only solo-easy class.
If they fix it, great, I'll be playing, but until then I'd rather try gnawing through a concrete block than grind, it'd take less time.

To the GM's that read this, just spend a week or three playing a mage, and you'll see what we're talking about. Were not broken, but we need tweaks. and new abilities, those are nice too.

I believe we mages just need more tactical options for our weak defense/health. Like perhaps some elemental damage bonus or some hp absorbing spell that could make a mages life easier by staying alive longer.
When you hit lv 20 the monsters can get close within 3-4 spells. Making it necessary to use pots or to kite a lot. Kiting can also lead to more monsters chasing after you. Then this can lead to death and a lose of exp and time, which can be frustrating at times.
Thank you for you time.

If they made the freeze spell actually slow down monsters a significant amount...

well i am a lvl 39mage almost lvl 40and i really hate my character. We mages really cannot do anything. We are bad at Pvp ( player Vs player) and bad at soloing. we cannot fight monsters our lvl.. becuase we are made of paper. you probly could fight monsters your lvl , but your gonna end up using alot of potions/stones. stones are not cheap at llv 39so yah. Mages stick to parties.. and i think thats all they are good for.

Mages kind of stink . im a lvl 39mage. We use lvl 1 skills.. other higher lvl skills cost to much and are useless. We cant solo nothing without wasteing tier 2 pots and my lvl and tons of stones.. and the sp cost of spells are outrageous.. Mages die in 3hits. they are horrible in Pvp(PlayerVSPlayer) in guild war, they lose to everyclass just becuase they die in 2hits. I regret getting my mage up to lvl 39.. becuase its a waste of time for a pile of nothing. Mages are only usefull in parties, thats all the options you get to lvl.. or else you are stuck doing a kq your whole time in fiesta. Mages cannot even fight monsters that are colored yellow to them becuase there spells do nothing at higher lvls, die in few hits. so mages are kind of useless if you ask me. they seriously need a fix on spells are Hp. mages are the most troubled class. Yes mages are underpowerd the only good thing they hve is good dmg. but fighters and archers get up to our dmg rate at higher lvls cuz of there skills and such.. so yeah mages are a waste of time.. make one if you are bored. Mages are frustrating

A while ago someone said all classes are terrible soloers, i think that is quite wrong, an offensive fighter can solo quite well by himself while being able to take quite a few enemies out pretty fast before it needs a rest, and although i agree with the fact that the game's concept was made to party i don't agree with the fact that the fighter is a terrible soloer.
To me the mage is really furstrating cuz i hate having to keep running from battle and the MAGE has to keep away from enemies unless is a masochist and enjoy's getting killed lol :p

Im new to Fiesta too and I also went thru the same problem when decideing my main charter. I think Mages are awsome and Im going to stick with my mage because I like the amount of damage he comes out with and what he realy brings to a party or hunting group and the advantages he has over some of the other classes.
Im full int and loveing it but you hsould ether go full int for consistant damage or full spr for random damage. Also I just recommend trying every class cus you never know that you might fall in love with a cleric or that you play better with a archer. So please just try all the classes before you do mage and play them up to lvl 10 (itll take about 4 hours) cus thats how i found that playing an archer for me is unbarable and that clerics and fighters are the damn same thing....

Solo mage? hit and run with a speed scroll =). It's troublesome but the only fast way... Mage has highest damage, but lowest in aspect of defense. Partying up is the best solution actually, mage die easily but the massive damage makes it all up (especially magic blast at lvl 49).

In most other MMORPG's, mages can solo just about anything. So I think the complaints of mages being unable to solo is from those who have been babied by the idea...
I have no difficulties fighting on my own or in groups with my mage. I haven't hit level 20 yet, but I think she will continue to be worth the investment :3

Well!! I read a lot of ppl's views. I am a lvl 5x mage and i will say that if u have the right equips and right friends in the game being a Mage is Fun. Well first thing first Kiting is essential. Also if u r pure int build then u can take out the yellow mob when they are able to hit u once. ( I am not a pure int but make it in equips 2:1 INT SPR). Also it is a gr8 class to farm if u r lazy just go and kill greens u just have to aim and fire. They die before reaching u and u can keep collecting the items. Also since we have cooldown on some skills which is high(15sec) just rest for that period regaining some HP.
Also if u have gone to URUGA u will notice that there is lot of demand for Mage's there cause mage's rock in party. essentially being the major damage specialist. So i feel mages are the most fun. I also have a fighter who is lvl 28 but i stopped playing on him cause i got bored.

do a full END build on mage, and u got your self a tanking mage that wont rip like paper when it gets hit. it will upgrade to cardboard

Well making a END mage will be like making full INT on a fighter so that u save some SP stones. Well i have never seen a END mage at lvl 40+ and not sure if there is one even at 30+. Retardz do u have a END mage ??

Agreed... I am feeling very inadequet standing beside a cleric or an archer. You will see mages standing around in kq while others are busily attacking the mob because we are simply waiting for the cooldown time. To quote a fellow mage in kq when responding to a plea of help from the tank, "We will help... from back here."

there are too full end or mostly end mages. phoenix2124 (or whatever his name is -_-) is mostly full end from what i hear and he's what, lvl 50+? he pwns in a party and solo, so it doesn't really matter.
also, full str archers can out dps most mages at higher lvls. they also don't die as fast.
and i personally love playing a mage, just as long as i have a good fighter and/or cleric with me. ^^

Only prob I got with Mages is that they are draining in game and in real. I've been playing fighter for over 2 yrs. now so the def drop from like 2.5k with a axe or 2h to like 2k isn't really appealing.

I guess I never liked the squishiness of a mage, but mages and archers practically have the same defense, so I guess I could start playing one

Unbelievable as it is to me, the ranking have changed once more. The former champ, with his seemingly impossible-to-exceed necro of 3 years has been toppled in less than a month, and we have anew reaigning champion for our
NECRO AWARDS!
Here are the current standings:
Fourth place, and the Necromancer-in-training:
iownages, with a necro of 2 years, 16 days, 11 hours and 59 minutes
Third place, and the copper coffin award:
sk8r_dude, with a necro of 2 years 25 days, 17 hours and 34 minutes
Second Place, and the Silver Zombie,
lolman217, with a necro of 3 years, 8 days and 30 minutes
and now, our new record for the necro award, besting out lolman's necro by almost a full twenty days, our coveted Golden Zombie and the title Pathological Necroer goes to:
icydragon667, with this latest necro of 3 years, 27 days, 23 hours and 47 minutes
Our congratulations to icydragon667 in this fine display of thread necroing, you can accept your award, title and trophy immediately after finishing the mandatory necroholic rehab session (it's only 2 weeks)
