1. No KS'ing (kill stealing) if someone is attacking a mob and doesn't ask for help, TRY not to kill it for them

2. apologize, apologize, apologize. one " I'm sorry" can go a long way (accidental ks or anything else)

3. Try something several times before asking for help...try it new ways...get better at the old way....try another character, etc etc etc
you never know what little detail might make a big difference until you try it
A little persistance goes a long way.

4. No begging. be professional....act human, people respond better to it, as should they

5. LOOK AROUND, try to find clues ingame that might help. THEN try SEARCHING the forums or GOOGLE to see if someone else might have had the same problem, and find the answer they got. Chances are, MANY before you had asked the same thing......

6. No cursing at people unless you know them....they could be too young to be seeing such words, words that could get them into trouble when they say it at school (hint hint).....
..........for those who don't get the hint, if I remember correctly there IS an appropriate language clause in the agreement you made with outspark, when you checked the box that says "agree" ......though if your cursing at people you probably just checked the box......... And if I remember correctly if you are cussing at a young child, if you are reported (you will be),you may no longer be able to play

7. DO NOT ADVERTISE ......self explanitory....plz tell me i dont have to elaborate

8. Act with dignity Be kind, politeness can change a mishap into a nice experience. You could gain a friend. You just really NEVER know how it might turn out.

9. Act as though you have some intellect......even if you have none, feign it......Most gamers are fairly intelligent people, can't we act like it? I'm not sayin spell every word 100% correctly, but try just a little. iT sux tryn ta re@d stupid BS lak dis. also slang = not cool

10. No lying.....yeah I know it's impossible for some, but there's no point to it. It's not like anyone cares what kind of car you drive or job you have or whatever, so you you might as well say you drive an '82 geo,or a slugbug. But most of all don't pretend to be the opposite sex, it's just creepy. NOTE: I DIDN'T SAY DON'T PLAY AS THE OTHER GENDER; I SAID DON'T PRETEND TO ACTUALLY BE THE OTHER GENDER. If you are a guy, playin a female character to try and get some poor loser to give you free stuff is LAME and about as immoral as it gets. Don't be afraid to tell people you play a female. Ladies this goes for you too. Yeah there are some who would hit on you, just blow them off, and take it as a compliment.

P.S. yes, I do play some female characters and yes I am a male. And NO I don't EVER try to convince people I'm a woman.

P.P.S. there are some games that make you play a female, I.E.
Diablo (depending on class), drakken and demon stone to name a few

11. I'll let someone else pick it up from here.....

Please let's keep this somewhat on topic, and see if we can come up with a guidebook for newbs and people who obviously dont know (or just dont follow) the unwritten rules. Thanks;)

I like your list, but have one minor suggestion: You can't expect 12 and 13 year olds to be professional, much less know what that means. Plus, there are a few redundancies in your list. I'll mash up a version tomorrow after some much needed rest (Old people need much sleeps!!! YAR!)

Oh - and about advertising. I advertise DAILY. How about getting to the heart of the matter? Let's try "Don't SPAM your advertisements". Once a minute is a typically decent rate. I use advertising to sell my wares in game and have been known to make quite a show of it in the process with the help of many friends. I've turned enemies of my advertising campaigns into honks of mine, if not friends. That particular one really resonates with me. Beyond that, I'll mash your list with my own ideas.

Sadly, however, applying these rules to anything outside of your own behavior or perhaps your own guild is really not possible.

Again, I'm just offering my quarter. As always, common courtesy is at the root of 99% of what you're saying. I can dig it.

If this helps one person, or stops one person from annoying the living crap out of someone else it was well worth the effort. especially since my luck is, that one person that changed would have been the one annoying me.
Even if you can't change the world you can change a small part. And it's the trying that counts.

When and if I ever get a guild or join it'll be more like a knighthood lol

Yeah professional is a bad choice of wording....is a first draft written in annoyance and tiredness....depends on how mature the 12 year old is....
but yes I see your point

I'm not sure what you're calling redundant exactly? my elaboration? just trying to make sure people know there is a reason, and throw a few disclaimers in there.

Yes, you have to sell your stuff....that's fine and dandy
but there should really be a marketplace to sell stuff. They made on in Asherons Call..... I thought it was stupid at first, but it worked rather nicely. and kept all the lag and advertisements in one place away from the gameplay. was great

I understand 1 per minute, but when there are 20 peopl selling, that makes one every 3 seconds, which kinda sucks.......but still tons better than spam.
Spam always leaves a bad taste in my mouth.....pun definately intended :D

I appreciate the honesty, criticism and the support.

LOLs at the female character thing, seriously, we have enough ten year old boys getting married to each other over maple story, so that rule would do more good than harm.

Seriously, if a guy plays only female characters, it's kinda sad lol.

Unwritten rules stay unwritten. They seem more of "guidelines" anyways than actual rules.

lol natural

I can see how you would say that...personally I play both male and female characters........Its truely scary when you think about how many guys are out there actually PRETENDING to be chicks though..... :scared: :shiver:

Yes, generally unwritten rules stay unwritten.....but sometimes people need things spelled out for them.

And yes, they ARE more like guidelines, but that doesn't sound as good :p

I played Star Wars Galaxies and I liked the idea of creating your own shop that had vendors in it and always had your wares in it so you could run around and kill stuff or smack kittens, what ever it is you would rather be doing then playing 1UP from Mario....

I would only have one main rule that would apply to everyone: Maintain discipline. Without discipline you have disorder, disorder breeds chaos, chaos breeds pedo's and the Jeffrey Dahmers.,..

Mind if I elobarate and share my experiences?

1. I've Ksed. I'm ashamed to admit it but I've done it. I don't do it intentionally, mind you but when I need to kill that last speedy boggy and me and that mage are racing to get it then I will not veer off my path, whether I get the kill count or not. I know it's not nice but this is the only instance in which I would ever KS. I don't think it should be considered KSing if you attack the mob that's attacking another player's back since, y'know...technically they didn't 'claim' it as their kill but some don't share that policy.

2. I have never apologized for KSing in that instance (see post above) only because, in my mind, I saw it first. I do apologize if it was an accident and I let the person pick up whatever the mob dropped.

4. Begging is annoying and it's prevalent in MMORPGs. If you have enough money to afford a computer and an internet connection to even play this game then you don not need to beg!

5. I've been guilty of this too. I finished a quest (can't remember which one) and went to collect my reward, but even after talking to the NPC, the quest would not become marked as 'Complete'. I tried talking to him several times, logging in and logging out, checking the forums...nothing. I then tried soliciting help in-game. The first person I asked did not know and when I went around asking random people, everyone ignored me. Well, I re-read the quest log but thoroughly this time and realized I was talking to the wrong NPC. The NPC I needed to talk to was in Roumen while I was talking to the one who initially gave me the quest in Elderine. All my frustrations could have been avoided if only I'd read carefully.

7. When you say advertise, do you mean advertising other games, or the infamous silver sites? Because I'm gonna have to go with rustic on this one. I see nothing wrong with letting people know what you have to offer them. It makes it easier to find what you're looking for especilly when you have to wade through hundreds of mushrooms, most of which are already sold out. SPAM is what I have the issue with, like the person that keeps advertising that level 40+ bow every two seconds.

9. Typos are a fact of life, we're human, we make mistakes, but whenever I spot one I correct it. I guess it's the English distinction in me but I don't want people to think I'm an illiterate dunderhead. I also like to help newbies (not to be confused with n00bs) but I refuse to communicate with anyone that uses leet speech. If I make the effort to type properly, why can't you?

10. Well, you can't stop anyone from lying online but I understand where you're coming from. I'm a girl and I used to play Graal and the easiest way to get freebies was pretend to be a girl. You didn't have to 'sleep' with anyone, you just had to act like a chick. Guys used to come up to me and give me money and offer to help me with quests just because I was a girl and used a female avatar. Now, I'm older and I find it annoying. I'm not one of those bra-burning, male bashing feminists but I think I can take care of myself, thanks, and if I really need your help then I'll be sure to ask you. :)

Oh I should point out that I have no problem with anyone offering their assitance to me if they're a friend and we've adventured together, other than that, it kinda feels like I'm being a charity-case.

The perverts can just kiss my...well...you know. I was playing NosTales and this guy comes up to me and tells me I'm a who**, then, proceeds to ask me to do it with him after insulting me. Why do they do this? It's sexual harassment! Is it okay if I sexually harass the male players? If you say 'Yes', then tell me your IGN and which server you're on and we'll see how much you like it (let's see who takes the bait).

The male characters playing as women and vice versa can't be avoided in some games, I'm afraid but whenever I play a male I...pretend to be male. Is that bad? I'm sorry. I like complimenting the female players (not flirting) and generally acting like a true gentleman. I guess they're disappointed when they find out I'm a girl so maybe I should tell them up-front.

Well, it IS a roleplaying game, a fact lost on many and observed by few. I see nothing wrong with someone playing a character as if they were that character, sex of character included. It is alright, because that is how they choose to play it. People shouldn't invest too much into it anyway, it IS merely a game when it all boils down. If you find it THAT wrong that someone is roleplaying a woman and they are a man , then I think you should look at yourself and where the problem really lies...

Roleplay: To assume the attitudes, actions and discourse of another..

In a game where sex is an option and race is an option, the bounds are as limitless as your imagination. If someone feels like playing as a CHARACTER of another sex. By all means they have all rights. You don't tell the gamemakers you are a male and then only can choose to play a male. It is a game and you shouldn't think too far past that. I call people by their ingame names anyways, I try not to call them by the sex of their characters. I play an elf named Talkius. Do you automatically assume by looking at my character that I am an Elf named Talkius who can call magic from the thin air to slay beasts that do not exist on our planet? Then you shouldn't assume that a woman is a woman and a man is a man. Look past that and play the game...

When it all boils down. You can limit all options and tell people what to do and when to do it and people won't like it. You can give them all the freedom in the world to do what they want when they want to and someone will be against that as well. It is a lose-lose no matter how you look at it and a win-win no matter how you look at it. It differs from person to person and whom is talking to whom.

Postscript: My name is Talkius.

Allow me to defend myself before I come off sounding like a hypocrite. What I meant to imply when I said I like to pretend I'm a male was that, when conversing with female character (whether they be females or males on the other end of the internet connection) I would say something like:

Good morrow fair maiden. How are you today?

...Yes I know, the imps in the Hollow Cave are really difficult. Would you like me to help you kill them?

...It was a pleasure speaking with you, my lady. May our paths meet again.

Something to that effect. I find though, that when I play a male I tend to 'roleplay' more than when I'm playing a female. Maybe it's because I'm playing a different role or maybe it's because I know how women like to be treated and I treat them as such because, hey...I'm a woman too. Whatever the reason, like I said, I do not flirt with women when I'm in my male persona, I act like a gentleman but I do not lead them on to the point where they ask me to marry them. Many of them tell me I'm so nice, etc. but I've never asked to be engaged.

Hey, I guess nice guys do finish last. XD

there is a reason i never ask the other player's sex. it's because i have incredibly little interest in their genitalia. if you ask ill tell you i'm a man but to be honest i don't see how my gender should affect the way you treat me in game.

And remember, everyone is a newb sometimes. Newbs are ppl who are new to something, they bumble around, ask what some see as silly or repetitious questions and may pester the veterans. However, noobs are straight from the GamePlayer Hell of Fame. Noobs are players who have been around long enough to know better and still misbehave. They annoy, they agitate, they break every single one of the rules the first poster listed. They will get on your last nerve if you let them. They seem immune to many forms of embarrassment or ridicule. They will drive you crazy and often it is deliberate. So, let's tolerate the newbs without causing them to turn into the noobs of tomorrow. It's a game, have fun, ignore those who drive you crazy and if you aren't enjoying it, move on to something else. If you are a noob, run, don't walk, to WoW or some other game and annoy the ppl there. We just don't have time for you.

Here are my responses to each rule.

1. You can't stop a ks. The only thing you can do is ask them nicely to stop. Oh, and actually spell out "killsteal," since they'd most likely not know what it is.

2. You can say it, but most of the time, most people won't say anything if you do it once.

3. Use a shout every once in a while, not once every few seconds. You don't need to invent new ways to ask. Just don't spam and **** off a lot of people.

4. Most people won't listen to this; just either a.) don't say anything or, b.) say no. That, or tell them how to get money. Your choice here.

5. Since most people playing on the internet, they won't look. If it's the forums, just ignore their posts. If it's ingame, you can help them or block them (if Fiesta has that function; I haven't looked).

6. It's pointless to have this as a rule, since most people would know what they are. If the game has a censor function, like Fiesta, then this rule would block out most cuss words since most people are too lazy to respell a cuss word.

7. Seriously, Fiesta needs a ignore function.

8. ALBAKERKIII! Seriously though, no comment.

9. If they're too lazy typing out "you," then they deserve to be ignored. No one wants to see the English language butchered, unless you're one of the idiots who constantly do it.

10. This is a pointless rule. The whole man-pretending-to-be-a-woman-to-get-stuff would be a problem you personally have to do. If you get scammed, then it's your fault for not being intelligent enough to see that. Hell, rule number 9 applies to this one.
