I'm a pretty good video ographer and I'll help you lot make the best movie you can make. now here is what yer gonna need.
A screen capture program. (like Fraps, and wegames and bsr.)
A game that you want to record yer movie. (like fiesta)
people to play as actors in your movie, or you can solo it.
a script. (i prefer to improv myself.)
And of course music and sound effects.
if you have adobe after effects that's fine, you can add alot of bells and whistles to your movie, i mainly use window's movie maker.. (it's free and easy to use :D) if you have high end software for video editing by all means use it.
so here is afew easy steps to make yer machinama:
Step one:
Ask people or friends to join in.
It may seem like a good idea to just role play your role and film people in the machinama, but not all like to be on camera. so it is wise to let people know and ask if they want to be a part in it.
Scripts:
Scripts are pretty handy should you want to make a machinama with a story, however make sure to provide everyone in the cast with a script. it would be pretty silly should you be doing a Naruto machinama and the main lead forgot what he was supposed to say. (it happens to all of us. )
Location:
You'll have to find a right location in order to shoot yer movie, but that is up to you. if your going to have your character in real life walk around your house and talk to you in real life then your gonna need adobe after effects or sony vegas.
Credits:
Unless your the super vain momma's boy sort, always have credits at the end. and be sure to type in everyone's name in the credits. otherwise people could be dissapointed in not seeing their names in the end. This also holds true for titles.

In conclusion:
Well Really even the best movie maker starts at the bottom, and just keep at it until your sucessful. you can check out my movies on youtube at: http://www.youtube.com/user/Raymond13557 i made afew fiesta movies, you'll have to dig in abit to find 'em.
