Are servers independent?

So I missed the CBT and was searching through the forums to find that people talked using "servers". I was wondering are these servers independent of each other, meaning if you made a character in one server, it can't be used in another, or are these servers more like channels where people can switch between to find an empty map or less people? If they are independent, anyone have any clue how many will be released for OBT?

I hope it isn't like MS to where your charters are in different servers. I hope it is like you can go to any server with same person.

currently there is only one server in the game but that server uses 2 channels. the people on the channels can interact with each other during PVP and in Play rooms and in Buddy and guild chat but can not see each other in the main maps unless they are on same channel.

Yeah, I think 1 or 2 more sounds like a good idea, I hate when its too crowded everywhere. :p
