trying to make a char/playing probs

When i try to create a character the character looks like white squares and i cant see it, then when i log in the screen is all black. i am running windows vista also could someone tell me if that is whats causing it?

I too am having this problem. I just started today and not quite sure what to do. Is there a solution for this problem?
