View Full Version : Solution to server lag

As we all know, the server populations in the last few months have been packed. If you go to elderine or uruga you would see at least 40 shops and in uru you have that nice congestion of shops by the stairs.
AUCTION HOUSE (or some sort of marketing place)
You put what you want to buy AND/or sell into said place and then log off or go make use of your freedom in isya.
Meanwhile your selling stuff and/ or buying stuff. Even if you log off the market keeps going. Whatever you sell/buy, when you log back in, gets put into your inventory(money or items) upon relog(onto the specific character that activated the sale, not just any char on the account)
Result is no more shrooms flooding towns, no more lag while in town, boss events in town can go insane, since there are no sale stores to be harmed, and Outspark can stil make money w/ sale slots just like the shrooms.
Outspark doesnt lose money(actually can add more items to the sc store), and more room for players on the server. EVERYBODY WINS!!!!!!!!!

i don't get lag
so maybe the solution is a better video card/more memory
an auction house is all well and good for some things, but there are occasions where i need something right now, and the only way to have that is with stores in the towns
if you don't want to see stores in towns, just use shift+z

so you're telling me that when you run through elderine that you dont lag while your computer loads all of the houses? And yes it does happen outside of town. I was in the 6x abyss a few days ago and hit a 30 second lag LITERALLY. Lagging that bad usually results in dc but i didnt. After the 30 seconds I was able to see a slight movement and then it gradually came back up to speed.
Before you say it, I upgraded my ram to 1.5 gig about a yr ago and I have never lagged that bad, EVER, especially not in abyss. It didnt just happen once. It happened a good 3 or 4 times before it stopped happening. Inbetween the lags it was fine but once they hit it was dead-stop(time lag)
The reason it happened was because of the servers being full and filled to capacity, resulting in time lags here and there. I have never experienced a lag that bad, even when I still had a half gig of ram, when I first started playing
So it isnt my computer.

how much ram do you have? Cuz anytime I enter it always slows down a bit while the houses load and then it goes normal

vista. That is why you dont lag silly. You have 3x the amount of required ram for the game.
So it is instantaneous for you.

i run vista, so it's not that either
it's a combination of quality ram and quality video card with at least 256 on it, and fully updated drivers, coupled with the quality of your internet connection (cable and other shared services are very good at shaving game ports and being laggy at peak times)
and no, i never lag in uruga, or eld - the only times i lag are when i'm doing other things on the computer while playing, so i accrue those to being my own fault (i don't just mean 1 or 2 things,i mean doing a lot, i'm a programmer after all).
the only two times i've ever had game lag, the server crashed, so those i will attribute to the server, but as that's only happened 3 times in the whole time i've played fiesta, and as users, we'll never why they crashed from someone spilling coffee on them to a DoS attack, we'll never know if a new server will cure that problem.
As has been stated many times, a new server won't cure the lag problem, and whereas some peopel will use the auction idea, it won't replace stores inthe game, so i doubt it will cure your lag problem.
you also state that you get this lag when you'r enot in a town, so how would less vendors in elderine prevent you from getting lag in, say, goblin camp?

I stated vista because vista can run up to 4gigs of ram where as xp can only handle 2gigs.
The lag in the abyss only happend on one day and lasted about 30 mins(those blocks of times that it did happen so it wasnt normal) so it isnt a regular thing for me to lag. I dont lag in abysses.
When did I mention anything about a new server?
And being that people wont have to stay on to sell or buy they can just log off. Thus drastically reducing server population(Vendor shrooms would be disabled) So yes it would allow for more people to be on the severs since it wouldnt be cluttered w/ vendors.
Please READ what I am saying before you post............

i read fine, i pre-empt the server thing because it ALWAYS come up in these discussions, without fail.
less vendors would still only reduce populations at some times, andprobably not peak times, cause i vend, but i also play, and most of the vendors to (not all, but most), so there are times when the server would be full.
i still say a lower population of vendors wouldn't make that much of a difference - and as my g/f does on her laptop cause it's poo, just shift+z cures all those laggy problems in towns

I think this thread is some awesome suggestion by adf1falken and not some mere discussion regarding how good your ram or video cards combination. Not many players here can own and upgrade their pc themsleves and dependent to their parents. I believe more then 50% players encountering lag everyday especially in town. I myself having same difficulties. So, i agree with your suggestion, its awesome. OS can sell slots instead of tycoon for persons who wanna add their additional slots. Its win-win situation, proper and well-organized. Good job, buddy!!

bad idea... nothing will be able to be sold for more or less will be basicly the same as NPCing it

Better solution, a better host server with higher bandwidth, i lagg sometimes using a 256 graphics card and 2gb of ram, whenever i lagg theres always something in common when i relog, server status high, i've played many versions of fiesta, the other versions i have played have less players, but the exact same specifications and i never lagged in them... i would expect my sc to be used on something productive i.e. better host fixing bugs, but progress is slow or non existant.

I run Vista (btw, only 64-bit Vista actually supports more than 2GB RAM even if you can install 4GB on 32-bit, there's a post somewhere with more specifics) and lag in both cities almost every time, and in the last couple of weeks have had some bad lag elsewhere too.
I have turned off Aero, kill anything else using my processors and toned down the graphics in Fiesta. It helps, but there is still lag. I also get a solid 1MB/s (yes, BYTE) download speed.
There are many reasons people lag, and the extra population due to the shroom vendors is one of them. A properly implemented Marketplace would help alleviate (but not eliminate) the lag. I do not think a new server would really help that much. How many current players do you think will actually switch servers?

I am playing on the EU version of Fiesta atm, and I never lag on my comp that has 700 MB RAM. There are only like 500 players online (MAX) XD
Eld is always empty and I never see many vendors..only like seven..

Hm, I don't exactly freeze lag, but, loading Elderine does take a couple seconds. Of course, I can ride through, and it loads behind me, and nothing happens. Not such a big deal for me.
I hate vista, but, it seems effective.

haha you figured out the "speed past the loading" shortcut 2 i c
and ya I froze( image froze on screen but computer is running fine and can use other programs(though i dont use any other program than msn while playing)) so it isnt my computer
