I'm not in the CB, but am curious to hear from those of you that are in and have also played Ragnarok.. how similar they are?
Sos looks like a clone of Ragnarok to me..
i'm curious what the actual in-game experiences are?
does Sos Have Pourings?
does it have card drops?

This is too soon in the making of SoS to call clone in my opinion. Too Many changes left to make...

No, it only LOOKS like RO at first sight.
The game is different....no card and no Porings.

also, there aren't any slotted weapons or upgrades as of the moment,
so you can't input any attributes into them whatsoever.
i wouldn't call this a ragnarok clone because although it looks similiar
(but alot of other 3D mmorpgs look quite the same as well), the gameplay is
different from each other and so are some of the systems.

Ragnarok would be hard to beat, most people say it's the best mmorpg of all, since it was one of the first MMORPG's done right. Altho it's a pay to play game, it's worth it, most 3D view mmorpg's like fiesta for instance,(i play wow a bit ,and guildwars) it's hard to have good community, but i always found, playing ragnarok was always so easy to meet poeple, talk, party up, trade, etc. this is due to the camra angle and how you DONT have to press enter to talk all the time, since all short-cuts are registered as alt+s (skill)
alt+p, Alt+g etc.
Is it better? I dont know. But i doubt it since the lack of cards, grindfest-like battle system, really lower stragity.
It might not be a ragnarok clone, but they sure did rip off the style of it.

RO will definatly be hard to beat, but beauty is something well aged. we will see how things go in the near future.

Yeah ROs pretty intense. Both SoS & RO have its strong and weak points. We'll find more to SoS goes OB. I love how SoS is like a HiDef RO [:

Good thing I noticed in SoS vs Ragnarok is:
1. Quests give you exp and/or gold and/or item
2. Each new party member gives 10% Bonus to the party (10% more for one of each class, 10% more for a "safe party" - full?)
3. Some monsters are intelligent? (Crown Slime calls the Purple Slime for help)
4. GMs are friendly, active and host events
5. Will be Free with Cash Shop
(Note that there may be more things I'll list in the future, but for now in CB)

Hehe, RO is prolly my fav MMORPG but I'm hoping SoS will make the genre fresh again for me, I need a new look on it and SoS has a lot of unique features.
Also it being a HD Ragnarok is great ><

ragnarok has a strong, "in-game feel". as if you're a person inside the game, interacting with other npcs and people. that is one of the strongest point it RO. while in SoS i have yet to feel the in-game feel. probably because it is still in close beta and everything is just starting up. SoS definitely has a great potential to be in intense comptetiton to RO

No, it doesnt feel like RO (after about an hour) no, there are no porings and no, no card drops, just NO! the only thing that is like RO, is the graphics.
After playing this, i appreciated RO more. Better classes, better game play...just better.

I make alot of posts about RO, and heres another :P
I honestly dont think this will ever be as good as RO. The classes in RO, the PvP the WoE, just the feel of accomplishment when you change jobs, was just fantastic. Sadly, it isnt here...

I don't know what SoS is like but I've played RO, and SoS looks equal or greater than RO
But then again how you're speaking about it, it sounds like we're comparing apples and oranges -_-

Its too early to say but im fairly dissapointed with SoS right now. So far its just been mindless grind with nothing else to divert your attention from it. Also, some of the jobs and skill arent made right and end up doing poorly. My lvl 25 rogue sucks and agi dosent really help much. I won't compare the game with ragnarok though because the game is still in closed beta.

one of the best things about RO to me was the class changes.. how there are soo many of them...
this game also has that many.. (well maybe not quite but a lot more than MOST MMORPG to date) and its ONLY Closed BETA!!
while the graphics look identical ( all you have to do is smush SOS characters down to RO size) RO mostly has MORE stuff than SOS, but then thats only for now.

Every single person seems to be forgetting about skills. The skill system is this game is absolute BS. No skill points = EVEN LESS customization and things to do...I have also been dissapointed by this game...if only it had a different skill system.

So is RO (I have a lvl 64 stalker on official server btw) XD
Although not everything is implemented yet, I prefer SoS. It's far easier to make money and getting well geared if you know what you are doing. RO is not newbie friendly at all. I like the graphics that are very close to the quality of Talesweaver.

No, I wouldn't call this an RO "clone." No porings, no cards.
There are definitely some similarities. The monsters might reasonably be compared to RO monsters, doing as many RPGs do and just pallet-swap the monsters with a few pixel/drawing variations (skills and abilities differ between versions, but they look generally the same, ala Porings vs. Poporings), and there is some semblance of PvP with the various Survivor events. The amount of gears you can equip is greater than RO but still a similar system w/weight and plusses (not same...just somewhat similar). Graphics are similar as well.
To compare SoS to RO at this point, however, is like comparing apples to skyscrapers. RO is in episode 11.2 right now and is SIGNIFICANTLY evolved from where it started in it's CBT/OBT days. The options available in modern-day RO had barely been dreampt of by OBT players...many more classes, skills, quips, cards, etc are avaialble now, along with more item crafting options. In short, to compare a game that's in closed beta with an evolved RO wouldn't be a very valid comparison at all.
Initial character customizations options are limited in SoS right now...four starting classes, only three or four hairstyles, etc. There are six stats that you can adjust to begin with but the impact they have on char. performance differs from RO, and even that's difficult to tell because of folks reporting that stats aren't impacting the game/character like they should. Basically, since this is still CBT and options are limited at the moment, we don't *really* know how this compares to RO yet.
One thing that is drastically different at the moment is with combat and dying - any monster can go aggro on you at random, and instead of losing a percent when you die, you currently lose a level. Bigtime ouch! I'm hoping at least one of those two features changes before the game goes "live" but we'll see.
Hope this helps for now...

I think it's too early to compare SOS to RO since it is still a beta right now (Ragnarok Online has already developed for a few years)...I'd have to agree that Ragnarok Online isn't newbie friendly (but when you find friends to party with, it gets a bit easier to level) and that there's more customization in terms of skills....but it does feel rather dragged out once you hit higher levels (I have a lvl 56 Knight)...
I'm fine with the pace the leveling in SOS is going so far....I'm hoping they'll add a couple more classes and hairstyles though...

iRO is the second MMORPG I've ever played (Runescape being my first), and also my favorite. I went crazy when I found out that this MMORPG was released; it seems like they took the good qualities of iRO and improved on the bad. Bots, pay to play and World of Warcraft killed iRO; I hope the same doesn't happen to this game.

how long have RO ben out? i would say at least 4-5 years now, with tons of additional updates. SoS haven't even been out for 2 weeks, and yet your complaining about how crappy the game is. What your seeing now in CBT isn't even have of the stuff that's gonna be in OBT.

One thing I am gonna miss on RO is the warp portals, and the ground-targeting AOEs, which I dont think are in Sos. Of course, I'm just saying this based on movies and stuff off youtube (Correct me if I'm wrong). Still, i do think SoS is going to turn out to be a better game, mainly because, although skill customization is pretty weak compared with RO, appearance customization is much better. Only time will give us a worthwhile comparison though.

ugh the bots D:< i really hated those...my sis recently played RO and Sakray has a LOT less bots now (since almost everybody moved to the official servers)....but there's a lot less people on Sakray too (like Prontera barely has any merchants but when my sis went on the Loki server, she had to walk through an ocean of merchants)...

Gwahahahaha - I love the ocean of merchants part.. If seal-online comes out soon, it's going to kill this game. for sure.
Seal-online looks like it will have a pretty robust system to use. I wouldn't yet say it will kill SoS, though. The graphics look pretty good and it appears to have som interesting abilities, but we really don't know how it will play or the stability of the system. There's also been frequent delays - this could be good (wanting to put out the best product possible) or bad (the game is infested with errors and they just can't get rid of them). I know they're at the point of installation now which is a sign of progress but we don't know a heck of a lot more.
One big differentiating factor will be the graphics themselves, me thinks. Many people play RO and/or SoS because of the 2d chars in a 3d world. Seal doesn't provide that same feel...in fact, some of the graphics of the architecture make the world look like its from Super Mario Brothers - a strong franchise, to be sure, but not historically the best source material for an RPG.
Sooo...yeah, who knows. We'll just have to wait for both games to go OB and/or live and judge for ourselves.

I have been playing RO for 6 years... RO is very fun, but now, I want to play a new game in which is now just in CBT. So for now, I cannot state that RO is better than SOS. SOS, in my favor, is a new game to me so I like playing it ^_^

Well, i had played RO for a LONG time, and its a really good game,a lot of classes, a lot of skills, ekips...cards...i really love it, so i thing its hard to a new game come and be better than RO, but i got tired of it, i wanna see new games, new things, then i starts to play SoS and i'm liking it, a lot...the only problem will be if they wipe, cause i dont know if i'll have patience to do all it again (ok, i'm playing for a few days but is not cool to do all that again, i did it when i played RO and i'm tired of doing that) so..plz...PLZ, DO NOT WIPE >< haha, i wanna stay in SoS for a long time and have fun ^^

Anyway, My thoughts that none of these types of games will Beat Ragnarok Online, RO was mine and Many other people's First MMORPG ever..and The Original 3d Sprite Game.RO has More Classes/jobs More Skills More Item Availablity, Guild's and Guild Wars (WoE) And..It at least has a PvP system going. Rag Online Will and Allways be the Top original Game in this Area.

Now I'm waiting for open beata too (or for an invite:rolleyes:) and after reading almost every post in this forum (and other SoS Forums) i need to post you now my opinion...
Many RO player say RO is much better then SoS because of classes, skillsystem, cards etc. BUT you forget how RO really started... I played RO in open beta and it was very similar like SoS. In OB there were no CARDS or 2-2 classes or Highclasses, or that much equipment it has today...
What i try to say is that RO grew with the time. It needed a lot of time to create the RO of today. I think SoS has the same potential like RO but you have to give SoS the chance to grow. SoS is just in CB and RO is developed for years.
So its just logical that SoS isn't that far like RO is. In 2 or 3 Years of Development we will see which direction the game evolves.
So my Opinion is that you cannot compare these games at the moment.

Weisser, grats your first post was actually something good, unlike alot of the people on these forums >>
Im an ex RO player and i frankly love the game, but the game is dying due to private servers which is part of the reason i left. My friend found SOS and i myself thought it looked like an RO clone, but i was lucky enough to get the download glitch and have been playing the game for a few days and id like to say:
its beats RO hands down.
Even in Closed beta its an incredible game and i see myself playing this game for a long time. I would also like to take the time out to say thats it is almost completly diffrent from RO, it has a diffrent feel, diffrent gameplay (to the extent that can be done with MMORPGS diffrence wise) and it looks amazing.
Those who havent got into Closed beta dont think that SOS is and RO Clone. Just keep a close eye on the forums and wait for that announcement for Open Beta =)

Personally, I felt RO was more of a visual chat room than a real game. Leveling in it felt ultimately pointless, since you couldn't solo against some monsters no matter how high you were. The only good RO servers were the private ones, since they let you level up enough that you could actually kill bosses and such. I hope SoS doesn't have the faults of Ragnarok, since it looks promising.

in RO, you really need to think how to build ur characters. they have elemental weapon(make by merchant) and armor(incert element cards) and they have many cards help ur strength & strategy. thats very important. their card, weapon, armor, status systems r so perfect. plus they got many Boss/MVP. the best game ever.
For SoS, they got the Lucky Ball system which is very creative. they can change different costumes too so u dont have to wear ur armor forever =).
i dont know... someone continue?

11-04-2007, 09:53 AM
That makes no sense. You mean because of private servers Gravity decided to make the item drop rates plummet, create unstaoppable monsters, and make the leveling system a total grindfest? If they were truly concerned about it, they would have improved all those areas in order to compete with private servers. That's just good business sense.

The main difference between SoS and RO that I find to hurt the game are the Character Stats and Skill level up. I loved how eavery class in RO had multiple builds focusing around specific skills and if you went with one build you missed out on a few skills but in the end could be really effective. It was all about strategy and planning your character out. There was a major feel of accomplishment when you created a successful build. Cards helped with it and were always considered a factor when making your build.
The two biggest things that I liked about RO, and a lot of other games haven't adopted, were the skill level up system and items.
I find it unrealistic when every class has 1 set item for every so many levels then their set changes. RO did it really well where a lot of gear carried over to multiple jobs (for the most part) weapons and gear made sense to be able to transfer over and as did the class specific gear.
The job level system is the second part that I miss. Waiting 6-10 level to level a skill is kind of annoying and makes grinding much more boring. When you can see a difference in your skills and builds after every level you feel a lot of accomplishment and it pushes you to get that next level instead of that next 7 or 8 before you se another difference.
I do see a lot of promise in SoS but as of right now it's getting a little boring. Salem Valley is getting old and being unable to move to a new map is quite tiresome as well.
I know RO has had years to perfect its system, it started out with just 1st tier classes then moved to second then implemented side paths to go to (ie Thieves could go assassin or rogue, acolytes could go priest or monk and so on) then there came transcended classes which was a whole new thing (starting from scratch with more exp requirements per level)
Although SoS isn't quite new... since it's just Xenepic (a Korean game) made for english servers. I'm not sure how long it has been out but I didn't think that translating a game was all that hard... as mobs were already made for you and game system and everything is there... just needing to be tweaked and tested (if you want to see mobs up until level 150 you can view them here http://xenguide.pe.kr/bbs/zboard.php?category=5&id=206&page=1&page_num=40&sn=off&ss=on&sc=on&keyword=&select_arrange=headnum,arrangenum&desc=asc it's Korean but it's actually kind of helpful)
Anyways, I'll give SoS until OB before I make up my mind completely but as of now I'm not really overly impressed :) (Waiting for Seal Online or Dream of Mirror Online... hopefully one of them keeps me interested longer)

well i've been thinking about this whole thing ever since i started...
which is like.... 2 hours ago... but the whole point ragnarok is soo popular is because is one of the first "good" MMOs out and its frequency in update... and the money they make from the players... but i think if SOS do the same and update frequently i think it'll be as good as good as RO or even better:)
