I tend to play a primarily supporting role, and am at level 18, nearing 20. I was wondering if one has to stick with one or the other, as well as which one I should pick. I Adore hammers, though maces provide more defence, which a healer would utilize more.
Is the defence aspect of the mace significant enough to choose it over the more asthetically pleasing weapon?

Just do what u want.
if u want more DMG but slower hits go for hammers.
if u want less dmg. more def and faster hits go for mace.

I tried to use both and i love maces cuz they faster.
i dont know if it's only me but it seem that every 1 hammer hit a mace do 2..
hammer to slow for me.

I will switch to a mace either at lvl 30 or 40. Why? I'd like to hit faster and more accurate. I wouldn't care too much for critical hits coz as long as i can repetively hit fast I'm ok with that.

I think it's also a decision as far as how your cleric is set up. If you have invested any points in SPR then you definitely should try that hammer out because of the critical improvement...and if you have enough invested in STR then the mace is great because each hit you do has that extra bit of damage tacked on to it and of course its faster. Also consider what rings your wearing as far as STR and SPR boosts. And of course finally the mace has more aim, so if you find your not hitting as much with a hammer you could try the mace. Personally I have both and sometime switch depending on whether I am missing a lot, if I am hitting criticals often or not, or if I am fighting monster I can kill easily and want to chop them down as fast as possible.

i like my mace, its faster, doesnt do as much dmg, but with the mace skill it helps. also *most* clerics party, so the extra def is a huge bonus. because when you have a tank and a mage your not really doing enough damage to matter anyways, just make sure everyone is kept alive....

That's up to you, you're going to hit a bit less with the hammer.. but the damage output and slower attack speed offset. That said, if you're running fully scrolled up (including the power scroll, which actually gives you a nice aim bonus) you'll be hitting just as well %-wise, causing more damage, and having a higher crit all things the same.

I wont trade my hammer for anything at this point, unless something drastic happens game mechanics-wise.

Well if you were like some clerics you would have both. For soloing i use the hammer to deal more damage quicker and the mace for party since i need to stay alive longer.

Well i took the Mace from my L20 quest, mainly to save money from buying the hammer mastry Which i thought youi had to have to even use hammer >.< look at sig :), but i bought a hammer +3 for 3s 555c so i have both now, Hammer for solo/dps, mace for fast help pull a loose mob off a mage in party

Guys i've got a lil question here.
I got myself a mace w/ 6% crit but i noticed that my hammer w/ 5% crit has a higher crit rate than my mace considering the fact that a mace has higher atck spd than a hammer ( assuming that higher atck spd = higher crit rate ryt?). is the additional 3% crit in my mace bugged?

I like hammers for the damage, but wow - I did not know maces gave you more def, might just have to change over.

ppl often thinks that mace is better at higher lvls (40+) due to its high accuracy, imo hammer is so much better and i found that with the use of an aim scroll, i hardly miss a hit on any monster, without that scroll...mace might be better at hit rates. however, the aim scroll is cheap and hammer does alot more damage plus more crit than a mace, so i have always been a fan of it...the only think i can think of saying in which the mace is better in at higher lvl is the way it looks....so kool looking, but the hammer just look a bit dull

If I keep using the Cleric class, I'm going to use a 2h hammer for aesthetic reasons .

Though it's nice seeing the relatively large damage output of Hammers compared to Maces, I still prefer the Mace. Faster attack speed does wonders to your kill speed.

Maces are nice and quicker but no they don't give you defense. Only certains one might but not all of them. I don't know where anyone got that from. But i like them both i will use a mace the higher lvl i get.

When I got two hammers in a row from Mara (+3 and +4, with 7% crit for the latter), it coincided nicely with my getting level 3 Mace Mastery, which I had been checking out against Smart Phinos.
With my mace without the mastery, I was dealing 78-86 damage per hit. +1 Mace, not Smart Phino licensed.
With the mastery, this rose to 81-89 damage per hit.
With the hammers, I was dealing in the areas of 93-109 damage, but hitting much slower. Quite surprising, since both hammers' enhancements were giving a healthy +9 or so damage more than the mace enhancement.

Quite odd. Considering the damage range on the hammers, one would think that maces are infinitely inferior, but with the formulae the game uses for damage, this doesn't seem to be the case, particularly with the extra mastery available for Maces, which not only will increase the damage by one tier more than hammers, but triggers more often, along with strength, since maces hit more frequently than hammers.
Combined with the increase in accuracy, fewer aim scrolls will be needed (which is nice, I can make the things, but I'm still cheap on using them), and equivalent damage will be attained.
