Sexual Harassment

I've been sexually harassed twice within the past two days, and feel that I should set some bounderies. Well, I'll first share the incidences with yall:

I was in the Reoumen mines, looking to improve my alchemy skills. Another cleric, at level 26, *a far higher level than I* randomly extends a party invite to me, and another low-level player (level 11). As we're trecking though, we enounter the alchemy books, monsters that can cream all of us exept for the level 26 cleric. He then attacks it, then runs towards the two of us, who are healing him. The book quickly looses intrest in the level 11 player, killing him instantly. I assume for the better, thinking that it was some sort of accident, but the "lol u died" made me suspicious.
We proceed through the mine, and encounter another book. This time, the level 26 cleric kites the book, but does not jump in untill after both of us are dead. I ask why he is running, and he replied that he found it amusing. At this point, it was obvious that he was doing this as a malicious act. I said, "The purpose of being a cleric is to HEAL people. Why bother being in this class if you get your teammates killed?" He replies, "Well, what about my ***** up in your ****?"

Another example is when I'm resting in the Forests of Mist, and a warrior begins to circle around me, doing all sorts of bizarre things. Unsure what to make of it all, I said, "*Stares*" and he replies, "Stares at Daevuss body." followed by "And enjoying the view."

To many, they may seem like nothing. But, these, if you didn't know, would legaly qualify as sexual harassment. These sorts of statements are unappreciated by most females, but most ignore them, due to how often this occurs, especially online. Females who do like this behavior often have self-esteem issues, and should NOT be taken advantage of.

In my opinion, these types of things are just not cool. I'm subjected to them, merely because of the gender of my character. I don't want to hear about anything related to sex when I'm playing a game, nor should I be subjected to it. Especially a game like Fiesta, featuring happy, anime humans and elves defeating cartoon monsters.

Years ago at Ultima Online there has been a rule against this. It was not said: Thou shalt not talk about sex, but it was said, that you should always talk in a way you would not be ashamed of talking with your mother when talking to strangers. In other words, be polite and dont do such things as stated above. With friends its something different *laughs* - but even that has its limitations.. one thing that still haunts me in my darkest nightmares is one thing i witnessed as GM one night while being on the search for Macroes (That were the bots of the 1st generation..). Two female charakters who 'played' together in a level of detail that would put every biologist to shame.. worst of it - i knew the guys who played them in RL.. SUCH moments are really baaaad...

Thats just really inappropriate. I mean, if a boy said that to a girl player, but was actually boy that would be...embarrassing.....Not that i'm against gays or anything.

Anyways this type of behavior is just stupid, what are they trying to do?

There is a report button in the game chat window if you feel like reporting those people. People are gonna say what ever they're gonna say, since in this great united states, where our FIRST contstitutional ammendment, our golden rule if you will grants us the freedom to say whatever we want whenever we want. Too many limitations have been placed on that since, and it's one of the many things Ruining this country.

Womens rights in general is a crock. or at least it has become. you've fought for decades to be treated as equals, now that you are, you expect us men to change the way we act and speak.

I personally would never knowingly sexually harrass a woman, or treat them as an inferior, and I think men who do should be socially shunned by their peers, but making rules against rudeness just isn't right. next thing you know, it'll be against the rules to tell someone to ***** off when you're having a bad day.

I think it would get annoying.. and annoying VERY FAST, and it would severely hamper your ability to enjoy your gaming experience.

and male or female, there are certain things that people say that hurt or **** you off.. whether you admit it or not.. and if you're pissed off about someone's comment.. you can't really think about getting apples and fine firewood for old man Robin..

I find nothing wrong with setting up guidelines on behavior.. because let's face it.. there are a bunch of teenage boys (and girls) on here who need to be told what they can and cannot do.. this is like a playground with no rules.. so someone's going to step out of bounds.. then someone will step farther.. and it will continue until a grown up steps in and draws a line.

I say we nip it in the bud right now.

I'm not talking about banning for sexual harassment.. but i little jail time for a proven harasment case should be in order.. send the GM a screenie of the comments and let them decide..

but let's not discourage people from standing up for themselves...

Sexual harrasment is a touchy issue. There's some things like "enjoying your body" that are like whatever to me. They're guys, it's in their brains. I'd just ignore it and leave.

Rules are only good for the people who abide by them. Regardless of punishments, people will still break them. So it's really no good in my opinion.

Also, to those who brush it off: Good for you! Its important to not be phased by it.

The problem is, though, that it is a legal matter. Even though it is far more difficult to do something about it on a game, it is still plausible for legal action to be taken agianst them. I just wanted to make that clear to them.

Personally, I'm not too big on the outfits. Its kinda the style of this art genre, though.
Personally, I say, "Give me a looser-fitting outfit anyday!"
I think on fiesta, though, part of it is poly count. With going from, lets say, the basic outfit to the second-level outfit is nothing more than changing the skin of the arms and adding gloves.
At least, that's my attempt to validate it.

I agree, that type of crap should not be allowed in the game or anywhere else for that matter. Im not a piece of meat for someone to pray over. There are kids who play the game and there parents should not have to watch over them, just in case some ****head wants to be offensive to get there jollies off. As to the *** who said "Grow up & move on" If that person was a close family member or your little sister your attatude would be different. Nothing is Black & White, Sexual Harassment in any form is Not Acceptable, nor should it be swept under the mat.

I'm not the one complaining about some rude comments in a game which I choose to play for fun. if they try to say anything sexually explicit to you, the chat filters block it out. swearing is against the rules, if they find words you feel should be censored but aren't, or find ways to bypass the filter, you should take screenies and report the bug so that the GMs can fix this fine beta software which they extend us the privelege of playing.

Remember, I'm not saying sexual harassment is a good thing, I'm saying that everyone needs to grow up and get over it.

I will say I don't agree with them taking such firm action over something that happens every day in or out of game, but their rules are the rules.

As a female gamer for over 10 years now (started playing Quake 1 and Ultima Online when I was 13) I've run into this situation a million times over. Just so you know, it will never stop, there is no way to regulate it, other than reporting, and even that wont stop it. Any game that has a female character (even if you are guy playing a female toon) will get comments like these. Just ignore them and play the game because that is what it is...a game. Most people play games to escape real life and do whatever they want without consiquence.

Kids these days have been brought up on a sence of entitlement, rather than a satisfaction from earning something. I think that's a big source of the problem these days...
Dispite my not being in the Traditionialist generation, or even the Baby Boomers, I have a very traditional view on things. With a swig of femenism.
I find that people are fully capable of having traditional values and modern philosiphies.

That's the whole reason our world is organize because of rules that set limitations. Apparently, if everyone who experiences any violation, harrassment were all to move on, none of the rules that protect your well-being today will exists. Don't just see it in your own perspective, view it from a different angle then maybe you will understand.

Essentially by the time they're done with me the last thing on their mind is anything sexual.

You can say you're sticking your pee pee in me or you think I'm hot and turning you on (how is that possible since I look like 10,000 others in-game?) and you may even threaten me bodily harm or to want to **** me.

Go ahead and try. Ultimately I just ignore you like the other 75% of the mentally unstable playing the game. I pity you, I look down on you, and the last thing you'll get from me is anything pleasurable to your ego or body.

This is just inane.
I am sorry that the way some of these guys act made you feel uncomfortable but it is going to happen.
It happens to me too.
Just understand that a very large percentage of the guys that you encounter in the game are really immature minded and some exploit the fact that they can get away with things in the game that they could never get away with in real life, which is true, so you have to expect that it is going to happen.
I know, I know, it still doesn't make it right but you don't have to put up with it if you choose not to and they can't touch you.
Depending on my mood at the time my response to other characters attempt to insult me with gross sexual remarks is usually.

1) Ignore them, in which case they don't get any satisfaction from their efforts to offend me.
2) Beat them down and stomp on them with verbal Kung Fu.

The point is that you don't have to be a victim of "Sexual Harrasment" in the game unless you let yourself be a victim.
The type of players that Sexually Harass and stalk other players also have very fragile egos so it is really easy to verbally grind them into the dirt with just a couple of snide remarks.
I just regard them as pests.

Chasing you through the game saying these things aloud, even if you could ignore him, some couldn't. If they never let you live that week down...That's where harrassment gets bad. When you can't avoid thinking about it. And just think, maybe you've never been harrassed or raped or molested, BUT SOME OF US HAVE! In regards to comments, I have to encourage others that knowledge is power.

If you let them effect you then ultimately they are controlling you. Many get off knowing this fact alone, which is why I deal with them as I do. I was the same way at first but then I learned on how to deal with them.

Reverse psychology. If harassment is going to ensue, I want to be the one top doing it.

Sexual Harassment is considered when you go too far like "I like your *****" or "you can't have this job unless you make me feel better in the bathroom". question to the gm's are they anyway that you can set up the game to were it auto takes a pick and sends it to you when you hit the report button cause some people may not be able to take screen shots plus most of the time you need to report sumthing it would be better to have screenshots to evaluate the problems better and not just someones word?????????

Now, in REAL life, I have been harassed by larger women saying what naughty things they wanted to do with my nimble body. It was kind of funny to me, but I guess I'm an easy-going person. Sure you can say "well, guys can force women to do things, physically." Well, this woman weighed 250+ and, at the time, I was 130. She could probably force me to do many things too.

The people who fill KQs up before I have a chance to think of clicking the Participate button get on my nerves and ruin my day. I don't have to take this. HARASSMENT. No one is saying that it's illegal to compliment a woman's looks, that's why some of them walk in front of construction sites, to see if they still got it.

In another MMORPG I played, I was hanging around a couple of guys, killing low level mobs and leaving the drops for newbies to pick up and this jerk comes up to me and whispers, so no one else can hear: 'Youre a wh*re'. After insulting me, just because I was a female character, he then ordered me to do 'it' with him. I told him I'm not that kinda girl and he left after that. I told the other guys about it and we had a good laugh at the jerk. Unfortunately, there was no PvP unless consuming a specific item so he got away, unscathed, from my level 20+ magely wrath.

It's unnerving when you get harassed like that but I'm one of the types that politely ask the creeps to go away and leave me alone. I wish I was like Tasty Tapioca but my insults are never that creative. Others have really soft skin and don't know how to handle incidences like these and such are the last things they expect to come across when playing a game like this.

I have to agree, seriously. So maybe I'm not a woman and haven't had lewd and perverted comments thrown at me by some random passing person ever since I hit puberty but I am still trying to see it through that point of view. Unless you're living or are from some third-world country where you're not used to that sort of thing or it isn't allowed .. you can say almost anything you want in the US. I'm sure at some point it must get annoying having someone follow you around throwing these remarks at you, just ignoring it is really the only thing you can do. It is unfortunate that 90% of the harassment is done by males which gives the impression and sterotype that all males must be perverted pigs, but we're not. So you're not gonna see it at every twist and turn during your gameplay. Just ignore/report the player or take some more drastic measures if the annoyance continues such as .. logging out for a minute or creating a new character.

And just on a side note: I probably wouldn't be as interested in a game that had hideous human female characters as I would be with more attractive ones. Referring to the post about 'why make characters so sexually sugggestive?' Beauty and sex sells.

I've never had the nerve to harass a woman in-game. Unless we were in the same guild for awhile and knew each other. When I played WoW all the girls in my guild were around 20-25. They were all decent looking, if not hot. After a few weeks of knowing each other(and trading pictures), we harassed each other all the time. It was mostly on vent, after a few drinks. I guess it wasn't harassment because we were just flirting with each other.

People can do whatever floats their boat. If people like smearing themselves in peanut butter and prancing around naked in women's undies then by all means knock yourself out. However it's as you've said, if you're pushed in a situation you are not comfortable with then you have ever right to speak up and reject said situations. I'm railing at people in general. Personally I'd be just as upset at hearing a woman making advances on a guy against his will just as much as a woman. I think the old mindset for that is the man is manly and strongly and isn't 'prissy' like women.

Ultimately it's about respecting others around you and respecting the wishes to be left alone in that manner if they ask such. :)

I think they just want attention from other people. They're really not trying to be a sexual predator. I remember around 1992-1995, IRC was a big part of my life. Tons of people from my school would get on there (female and male). People (not from our town) would come in there and harass the females (saying naughty things) and many people would laugh. First, let it be known that I am of the Male origin, and a very respectful one at that.
I think there are several points that need to be pointed out and I am playing the "devils advocate" for this subject. And no matter what anyone says, I will not be reading the responses, so do not waste your time replying.

First off, I think that the young lady has a very good point upon what sexual harassment is and does not deserve what has been done to her. I for one know what the laws are, and have seen worse, and a LOT LESS, and have seen people serving 5 years for a LOOK.
Secondly, If the "male origin" can not handle themselves in a game, where is their age, and maturity in real life?? Everyone (Or on this post a mix), seems to think that men are Inferior, but in fact, we as "Humans" are all suppose to be equal. How about when you get a job, and they have them letters; EEOE!? (EQUAL employment opportunity employer). Are they not looking at male and female accordingly? LIKE the Bill of rights, AND our Ammendments!?
The one real question that NEEDS to be asked...... WHY does this happen? This happens because Men THINK they can get away with something, JUST BECAUSE they are more masculine, or they work more, or they can do more than a women. Let me tell you a little something upon women.....
For example:
If me and my wife was playing, and my wife was being harrassed, I would report it without saying anything.... (Why?) I know, the thought passed through your mind while reading that last statement... Because, My wife is a special woman.... She has Cancer, Arthritis in both her knees, her back, and a few other places, along with Asthma, Diabetes, severe back problems which prevent her from moving around so easily like the rest of us..... Now think about this one person out of everyone that plays that game....

Thirdly, I can not emphasize enough on why men do this... they are doing this for one of several different reasons; 1) they are lonely.... 2) they are perverts .... 3) They are too young to understand that what they are doing is VERY inappropriate.... 4) They are grown men which think God made them more special than anyone else in the entire universe and are having a competition with themselves thinking they can get more sex from anyone than themselves! The only way I can see why people are getting upset is not because of the words being said, but more the attitude behind the words. As some have already mentioned most of these people are probably just younger kids/teens (as I am), and probably get all excited at the anonymity of the internet. They're just getting off at annoying other people online without any fear or thought of being punished. And by letting them get under your skin, you're just working in their favor. It's sad, but there really isn't much you can do about it over the internet. If there was a way, it would be nice, but I can't think of one. I chose to ignore it, not much point in arguing with someone online.

Ignore & Report seems like a good idea to me, getting worked up over this won't solve much. But IF we come across a way to stop it, then I'm all for it, it really does need to end. Some of us forget that we don't know who's on the other end of the harassment. There are kids playing this game, and other people who are vulnerable to the harrasment. Everyone should have an equal opportunity to have the same enjoyable gaming experience and it makes me sad that some people get harrassed so much online they become immune to it.

I'm not going to go back through the pages and search, but I saw the first amendment brought out. It's easy for someone to claim the first amendment to defend their words; but what amendment gives someone the right to infringe upon someone else's right to enjoy the game? (That sounds better in my head then typed out lol)

Anyways, the GMs shouldn't have to set tons of petty rules for us. We as players, should be responsible enough to be able to be carry ourselves in a respectful manner as well as work together to create an fun and friendly environment for people to enjoy.

I hate to say it, but.. Grow up and move on. The same can be said of any "Sexual Harrassment Victim". it's a shame that it happens, but you can either deal with it, or move on. There is a report button in the game chat window if you feel like reporting those people. People are gonna say what ever they're gonna say, since in this great united states, where our FIRST contstitutional ammendment, our golden rule if you will grants us the freedom to say whatever we want whenever we want. Too many limitations have been placed on that since, and it's one of the many things Ruining this country.

Womens rights in general is a crock. or at least it has become. you've fought for decades to be treated as equals, now that you are, you expect us men to change the way we act and speak.

I personally would never knowingly sexually harrass a woman, or treat them as an inferior, and I think men who do should be socially shunned by their peers, but making rules against rudeness just isn't right. next thing you know, it'll be against the rules to tell someone to ***** off when you're having a bad day.

I've been sexually harassed twice within the past two days, and feel that I should set some bounderies. Well, I'll first share the incidences with yall:

I was in the Reoumen mines, looking to improve my alchemy skills. Another cleric, at level 26, *a far higher level than I* randomly extends a party invite to me, and another low-level player (level 11). As we're trecking though, we enounter the alchemy books, monsters that can cream all of us exept for the level 26 cleric. He then attacks it, then runs towards the two of us, who are healing him. The book quickly looses intrest in the level 11 player, killing him instantly. I assume for the better, thinking that it was some sort of accident, but the "lol u died" made me suspicious.
We proceed through the mine, and encounter another book. This time, the level 26 cleric kites the book, but does not jump in untill after both of us are dead. I ask why he is running, and he replied that he found it amusing. At this point, it was obvious that he was doing this as a malicious act. I said, "The purpose of being a cleric is to HEAL people. Why bother being in this class if you get your teammates killed?" He replies, "Well, what about my ***** up in your ****?"

Another example is when I'm resting in the Forests of Mist, and a warrior begins to circle around me, doing all sorts of bizarre things. Unsure what to make of it all, I said, "*Stares*" and he replies, "Stares at Daevuss body." followed by "And enjoying the view."

To many, they may seem like nothing. But, these, if you didn't know, would legaly qualify as sexual harassment. These sorts of statements are unappreciated by most females, but most ignore them, due to how often this occurs, especially online. Females who do like this behavior often have self-esteem issues, and should NOT be taken advantage of.

In my opinion, these types of things are just not cool. I'm subjected to them, merely because of the gender of my character. I don't want to hear about anything related to sex when I'm playing a game, nor should I be subjected to it. Especially a game like Fiesta, featuring happy, anime humans and elves defeating cartoon monsters.

I think this thread is absolutely hilarious. As a female who's played MMOs for going on 7 years now, I've come to deal with idiotic guys (since it was pretty much only guys with me at first >> ) I'm not saying it's ok to HARASS someone, but seriously, neither of the two things you mentioned were critical. First guy made fun of you, you didn't like it, and he got snippy. Suck it up. The second guy complimented you. If it was unwelcome, say so, but it's not like he was all over you nonstop bothering you with disgusting comments. Saying that he liked the way your toon looks...I mean, come the hell on. 1: please control yourselves and be respectful to others when posting. Do not use profane language or acronyms and keep your text clean.

2: the behavior noted in this thread by Syrlith is, as the GMs have attested, both serious an offense and may be punishable. 'Nuff said. There's really no further debate needed on that subject.

3: we must remember not to confuse the First Amendment with a 'right to be a jerk'. We have the right to free speech and non-censorship but we also have a responsibility to treat each other in a civil, mature fashion.

4: is an individual feels threatened in harassed in any manner by any player in the game or on these forums, please do the following:

a) take as screenshot of the conversation of behavior and use the report button to alert a GM
b) remove yourself from the situation as quickly as you can
c) if the behavior continues, block the offender by right-clicking their name in text and choosing the ‘block’ option, report again.

Some people have mentioned that the person being harassed has a responsibility. This is true. By bringing the matter to the attention of the GMs and attempting to block the offending party is that responsibility. I feel this has been done.

Not everyone will find the same thing offensive. Please keep in mind that anything that is said (or written in this case) can be considered offensive or harassing by someone and it is your responsibility as an individual to stop said offensive behavior if requested of you. Everyone makes mistakes and everyone says stupid things from time to time, but you also nee dot know when enough’s enough.

I am thinking this discussion has reached pretty much an end, unless Syrlith has a desire to keep this going. If not, I will close this thread in the next day or so.

There are some good suggestions but it basically boils down to this: if you at any time feel someone is harassing you or acting inappropriately in the game (or forums for that matter) collect as much evidence as you can and present it to a GM or CSR. If a violation truly exists it will be dealt with.
