A keylogger is program that identifies the keystrokes made on your computer and can be used to gain access to account details.

Some websites contain them, if you load the website, you can get infected with a keylogger, the only way of prevention is to not go on dodgy websites, such as ones developing hacks.

As a reply to the person rambling about why would people waste their time hacking accounts instead of stealing real money... The stealing money part is a felony. However, you can steal someone's online game account, sell off their items and collect gold, which then you can return to the 'game' by selling (think of CGF's and all those gold site spammers).

I've never heard of legal "stealing" before.

Keylogging accounts is much easier than compromising a Bank. If it was so easy to hack for money, everyone would be doing it, obviously.

Actually hackers are people who make software and other computer related things. The word "hacker" has been misused such as "hacking accounts" and so on.

True, sort of. A hack is a poorly constructed piece of code that "gets the job done", as in "a hack job", thus a hack or hacker writes code that is generally badly done (sloppy, inefficient, has unintended consequences, is not thoroughly thought out) but gets something done, often by brute force. Most modern hacks rely more on psychology than brilliant exposures of computer weakness. A lot of people write game hacks because they are easy. Breaking into a banking system is approaching impossible, without some type of quantum computer or inside information.

Game hacks actually rarely attack the server, rather they screw with the communications between the client and server. A common hack is to have a UDP packet sniffer (a program that simply looks at the contents of messages sent to your computer) and generator running as you play a game, figure out what messages are passed between your computer and the game server and then generate more of them, say like, the message your computer sends when you drink an sp potion. Few if any of these hacks can get into accounts and hijack other players. These hackers are however, cheaters, which IMOA is the greatest insult that can be used for a gamer.

Incidentally, keylogs are real and prevalent. They are unfortunately an exploit of the MS operating system. The typical keylog system record each ANSI keystroke you make and sends them to a specific IP address. There are ways to defeat keyloggers from guessing your login and password however. Try this technique. After entering your username, but before you enter your password into the password field, type a few keys. After inputing your password, type a few more. This creates junk around your transmitted password making guessing it more difficult.
