Play style, play style, play style.
Quick blitz of magic, up attack power. Speedy recoveries, decrease cool down.
I don't recommend SP conservation, potions are easy to come by, as are stones, and regeneration is scaled to your max SP anyway.
It's more effective to do a combination of power and cool down. TYPICALLY, most people up the attack strength of powerhouse spells and decrease the cool down of speedy spells even further. Most mages generally use powerful elemental spells with Magic Missile slipped in between castings.
So, yeah. There's more strategies. I haven't heard of anyone using it, but you can decrease the cool down for Ice Bolt to provide a more reliable slow-down skill. Combined with speed scrolls, and you're literally playing hard-to-get. (UNTESTED, do not take my word that this will actually be an effective play style.)
Be new and creative. Break the metagame with some new idea.
'bout Life Tap...when I look at it, I puke. Godawful exchange. You can only use it when out of enemy attack range, and if you're that desperate for SP, you're probably already dead.
