View Full Version : Buffer overrun?

I signed onto fiesta today, and set up a vendor and waited to sell some items. About 2-3 minutes after logging in, i got an error message that said something like "Buffer Overrun Error" or something like that. It forced me to shut down the game. This now happens every time I log in, after about 2-3 minutes of gameplay.
What made this pop up and how do I fix it?
Edit: The bug just happened again, so before I lose it, I'm going to quote exactly what it says:
Buffer Overrun detected!
Program: C:\Program Files\Outspark\Fiesta\Fiesta.bin
A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the program's internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must now be terminated.

I am getting this buffer overrun issue as well.
Today is the first time I saw it occur, but now, I can't stay logged in for more than 3 minutes.
Tried re-log, tried cleaning cache memory, and temp internet files.
Going to attempt to uninstall/re-install Fiesta now. Will update with results

The uninstall / reinstall was successful, but the bin overrun still happened.
The only thing that I can imagine it is caused by is the most recent patch.
I think that if it was a DirectX or other software issue, then I should have been having this problem since first installing version 1.2.64, 6 days ago.

Same here. Till the last patch (played for the first time in like 5 days today) everything went fine, since today i get buffer overruns every 5 minutes..

This is a issue with your PC not having enough system resourses to run the game. This can stem from low amount of memory or even running too many programs in the back ground. Please make sure when running Fiesta that your have closed all programs running in the background... This includes chat clients, and other small programs that run at the same time as the game. Please try this method.
Thank you,

Thanks for the attempted assist Murdock, but I've got NOTHING full open in the background, not even attempting to multitask.
As I attempt to look at CPU usage through Windows Task manager, my CPU is running at about 55%.
Admittedly my compie is a little old, but I have plenty of free memory as far as hard drive space, and I am fairly sure I got plenty of RAM (1 GB) too, and I leave my cache size at right around 1 GB. The only process drawing any real amount of memory is Fiesta.bin, which is running at 249,300 K.
Not sure if it really means anything to you, but I also noticed that Roumen is pretty much empty, as far as the number of usual shops in place. That seems to indicate that this issue with system kicks while shop open, is much more pervasive than the forum activity would seem to indicate.

Found yet another possible contributing factor: spammers.
I tried playing a bit in the interim, and was successful for a bit, left my compie idle on a shop in Roumen again, then came back a few hours later and noticed I was kicked with an overrun error again.
Loged in again, and got another overrun almost immediately...
Turns out, that if I go to an area where there are no spammers, I can stay logged in for quite some time, but once chat starts getting heavily spammed, I get the buffer overrun boot.
I caught tt553 spamming at a rate of about 1 2-line message every 2 seconds this last time. Gold seller, of course.
Seems to me that this helps explain why it happened previously only when I started up shops though... shop tends to be set up in roumen, same place that the spammers tend to set-up.

Going to have to echo what's been said here. Getting buffer overrun errors. As Ur hinted, it's only occuring in towns near spammers.

Ok, my husband and I both got this error in Roumen, 3 times in a row. It is impossible for it to be what Murdock said, no offense, and there were not many spammers in town when this happened. Actually, there was hardly anyone in town when it happened. Can a GM please fix this and give us an actual solution instead of blaming our computers? My husband and I both have 2 Gigs of RAM, so I don't think it was a memory problem. Also, when we play, we do not have other programs open in the background.
I really hope this game is different then all the other ones I have played, and that someone actually fixes problems instead of letting them go on forever.

I am also having this happen, and I would like to state that it only started after the last patch. It may very well be my system running out of memory, but I do not think this is the case, as it does seem to be related to vending, and I regularly watched videos on Youtube while vending before the patch, and everything ran smoothly. Now any time I try to vend, whether or not I have anything running at all in the background, it boots me. When I am not vending, this does not occur.

This just started for me tonite, when I had a shop open in Elderine. I also have 2 gigs of ram and 1 gig video. Spammers were what I would call average, that is to say, they got on my last nerve again. It seems to be some conflict that occurring as it is a C++ Library error. Haven't tried logging back in to see if I will now face the every 5 minute disconnect, but that would definitely be painful. I just hope there is some sort of resolution to this problem.

I only get the buffer overrun in roumen. WHere the new people are spamming. It has also happened to me when i was in storage. It doesn't just happen when vending. But my computer is a gaming one and I too am offended that the gm's say it is our fault. If it is our fault up the recommended or minimum requirements because i have exceded them by far.

Being a bit of a game guru myself, I can easily point out that this is due to all the gold-selling spambots in town. I don't even have to be in a shop, and it happens. Strangely enough, all the gold bots are kicked with it, too. They come back, start spamming, it happens again, even with normal local chat filtered off.
This is partially an issue with the client, but primarily an issue with the spam bots in town. I can play for 5 hours straight in the fields no problem. I come back in to town for 5-6 minutes and leave the "hide characters" off, and I get booted, on a rig built for high-end gaming.

I have just started to have this buffer error and game shut down 2 days ago. I googled buffer info and it said could be bad register so I ran my program register fixer but fiesta still crashed.
So far this has only happened to me while in Rouman. I am thinking the other posts are right its all the bots or maybe just one that is causing this error. I seriously doubt its our computers. I am only using 50% of my 1G memory and 30% of my hard drive.
Can you have your techs look into this farther. This is really getting annoying.

Hi,
I got this error also in Rouman while trying to sell some goods. But it happend only after I switched the resolution of the game to 1280x768. When switching back to 1024x768 it was ok again, even with all the spammers.
But talking about gold seller spammers, is there nothing that can be done? The report button isn't helping.

This is getting worse. I can't even stay logged in long enough to get out of Roumen. The minute the spamming scrolls, I get booted. I got to take about 3 steps this last time. Is there a way for the GM's to shut down the shout & normal chat feature until they get this fixed so it's not jamming up the game?

Buffer_overflow/run seems to be a programming error which ought to be fixed within next update. This is truely a SOFT- no HARDWARE error, so no need to write down all your PC equipment. :D
Nevertheless i disaprove the fact that GMs are not giving any comment like "Please wait until the next update"-Stuff. :o

Hi, I've just recently had this problem last night while i was playing. Now I can't seem to stay in the game for more than 1 minute. It's really annoying since now it keeps happening. I've restarted my laptop several times and uninstalled and reinstalled the game yet it still happens.
Can a GM please solve this problem so that we can all finally play this game.

Today's been especially bad with this error. The last few days I've gotten it a handful of times, so I was able to summarily dismiss it. But this morning, I've had this error boot me out of the game 7 times over the course of about 20 minutes.
Can we get ANY response about this bug that isn't "It's your computer's fault"???
Edit: Also, twice already, the game's shut down on me with no error msg at all. Just me playing, then all the sudden... game is shut down. On top of that, 3 times when I log into my character, roumen will pop up, then the game will say "Disconnected from server."

Ditto I tried the delete game and reinstall bit and it did not help with the problem of the buffer overrun. The only thing I have found that does help is immeditley do Shift Z and block all other players. It would at least let you get out of Roumen.
I too have been tossed out of the game without warning or message after a toss out with message.
I took a screen shot of the error but it did not copy.

There's something a bit weird about this buffer overun error.
I have access to two accounts... my main one which I almost always use never gets this error. The second account which I only use when I'm bored of playing my regular chars or when I want to afk shop however almost constantly gets the buffer overun error.
Today the weirdest thing of all happened. I decided to login both accounts at once to transfer items from one to the other. My main account which was like 1-2 steps away from the secondary one still did not get the buffer error. The secondary constantly got it and had to restart. Getting a bit aggravated I logged off my main account and logged into the secondary from the same application then logged into my main account with the machine I normally only use to login the 'mule'. Secondary still crashed with the error while the main still did not get the error. Next I tried only having the secondary logged in. Still got the errors. Next I tried only having the main logged in. Still did not get the errors.
This tells me the buffer overrun bug issue is NOT character location since both chars were in same place during some of this experience, it is NOT my computer since my main account works fine on whichever I use but my secondary gets the error constantly whichever I use, and it is NOT the bots although they may very well be contributing to it.
The bug is almost definitely being caused by the account database server-side having some of its accounts become messed up when the new server was being added. I feel this way since it has become abundantly obvious that 1 account gets the error but the other doesn't.

I fail to see how my computer can play several other online games that require far more resources than this one (Ragnarok Online is a memory hog, World of Warcraft, Hellgate beta, RF Online, and so forth). Plus, as shown earlier a buffer overrun error has very little to do with a computer's hardware. No surprise that I get it only around popular areas of bots, like the Smith in Roumen... Not to mention I have a pal that plays this game that has an uber computer (for lack of better terms) and even HE gets this error.
Please give a response that isn't the usual "blame the player's computers". Because some of us (believe it or not) are techies and know this is an error on your side. I know it's your job to give copy/paste answers to things like this, but I also know it's frowned upon to give the wrong answer...

Jhanniss
10-26-2007, 11:38 AM
Looks like I didn't read the thread all the way before making my own. It's said by the GM that the cause is from resource useage?
I have 2 gigs of RAM and SLI Nvidia cards. I don't see how I couldn't have enough 'resources' to run Fiesta. However, I realize I am not a techy minded person so maybe someone could help explain it to me better?
I seem to only have this C++ runtime error when I am setting up shop in Elderine. It's only been during these times that I experience these errors.
When I run around the game and am active, I dont have this problem but for some reason it happens during shop mode in both Buying and Selling.

This would be a good solution... however, a lot of people encounter this 'bug' when we're trying to vend (buy or purchase) in Roumen/Elderine. As you can guess, this continually disconnects players who are trying to run these shops... :/ And you can't use character hide mode and vend at the same time...

I have to echo this sentiment -- it has been 3 maybe 4 days since a GM commented on this thread... almost as if it didn't exist.
Not that I expect daily updates or anything, but the fact that so many people have pointed out that their system resources should be more than enough to handle anything that Fiesta can throw at them, and the only GM response we have gotten was something along the lines of "it is your computer" is very insulting.
I had this error on Teva server with 2 different characters on the same account. Haven't checked the status there, since I have been playing on bjiou of late.
I know y'all aren't miracle workers, but this bug is worse than a little disruptive, it is flat out unacceptable. Playing a game that boots you every 5 minutes is just not possible.
Then recieving a GM response that seems inappropriate to the issue at hand --just not right.

Do you guys get the error even if you have the shift+z on?
I get them every once in a while but only in when I'm not in shift+z, the area is really congested, near spam bots, and running an few extra things in the background. (Downloading something (Usually a torrent file) with a Firefox browser open.)

Are these buffer overruns happening with -just- fiesta open, and all the crap in the systray disabled or closed? Buffer overrun concept: memory block is in use, and protected is trying to be used by another application.. it can't, and overruns... error, and kaboom.
If so, then the codering for Fiesta need to add bounds checking to anything that is heavily used in-game, and recycle known free memory blocks. I'd almost recommend re-writing part of the client and using ASM to handle the memory (to fix the KQ memory leaks)... but I from what I understand that they bought the rights to edit specific things only, and that they need to have the store open to be able to afford, and enlist a massive group of coders to make all of the dreams, requests, etc a reality.

..it's not the computer and it's not the programmer, it has to do with how the computer handels information sent by fiesta. It can be caused by poor programing and/or by malicious intent. Scan your computer, clean your registry and defrag your system and you should be fine.

This is a issue with your PC not having enough system resourses to run the game. This can stem from low amount of memory or even running too many programs in the back ground. I have never gotten this error until after this last patch. I have 2 gigs of memory so I don't think its low memory. And I had nothing running except the game. The fact that all 3 computers in this house that are now all getting this error since the patch tells me it is not our computers causing this.

I am getting this error to. Usually the only time i have seen this error myself is when too many commands are going into an array and the array craps out. Sounds like the Chat array / queue however its setup for the chat box might be whats crapping out. Potentially a way to resolve it and stop us from getting unwanted spawm would be to allow players to ignore people and block all local from those people.

However, after this many posts and other threads with the same complaint I am afraid you guys need to revisit your update from 10/31. My machine had no problems at all until that update.
What do you think? Would you mind asking the programmers to look into this issue for us, please?
Afterall we can't buy stuff from the Fiesta Store if we can't stay connected to the game. I would like one of those cute little boggies.
Thank you,
Narian

ok this has happened to me alot as well and as GM murdock says it is a system issue. now i run a top end system but have had this problem some of you may be running top end systems as well here is how i solved it
1.first make sure your system is recognizing all it's ram(note:anything less than 512mb and the error is almost constant)
2. try defragging your ram this clears out programs that the system is not using that may be running is windows background and not on your task bar(truthfully the only program that actually needs to run is windows explorer though on some systems this cuases problems too.)
3. i know the game graphics may not be as good as some of us have seen in other games. but the is alot of activity in fiesta and there for over loading your GPX and when that happens your GPX will use system cash mem. to account for the over load and could cuase the error yet again
well trying these few things worked for me and the error ceased so i hope it helps some of you as well
Good luck and good gaming!

i just started gettin this problem today. i've been playing since october-ish, and never had a problem. i run a very high-end laptop (and no, it's not due to lack of memory, i have 2GB) and i have checked all my background programs and such. nothing is working. GM's, please treat this like the problem it is and stop blaming the users for your program's flaws. (wonderfull program as it is.) I;m going in for a complete memory wipe on my computer as since the first time the bug happened, ALL my internet connection files are corrupt. I'll keep you all posted to see if it helps. Hopefully the root problem will be solved and everyone else will not have to result to wiping their harddrives.

everyone cool down. buffer overflows are in most cases not hardware related, just wait until the devs can pin point the bug and correct him.
also deactivating a certian cpu feature might help.... but i dont recommend it.

Before I explain anything.
All faults and Damages are not against me because it is your choice to do this.
I've still seen a lot of people saying that when they are playing and go to crowded places sometimes they get this message that say's buffer overrun C++ and on the window it tell you it must close the program. Well I'm going to tell you how to fix this problem. I reported this to one of the GMs and they said this problem has been fixed but it still seems to be on some people's computer. All this means is that the fiesta folder has too many programs (or the people in the game moving such as lag) and can't fit all the files running at the same time which tells you that there is something wrong by shutting the game off.
Please read it before actually doing it.
Heres what I did to solve this :
Delete Fiesta by going to Start>Controle Panel>Add and Remove Programs.
Look for the firesta game and then highlight it and on the side it will appear a remove button. It will then remove the game.
Now you have to do a system restore by restoring your computer to a earliar time.Do this by going to Start>All Programs>Accesories>System Tools>System Restore.
A new window will pop up and read it if you want to then click on ok. There should be a calender that shows up asking you how far back do you want to restore your computer. (WARNING ALL SAVED FILES IN THE DAYS AFTER THE RESTORE DATE WILL BE DELETED) I would clikc the earliest time or maybe a week or so.
Your computer will automatically restart but will take longer then usual. Once it is done you should reinstall fiesta and you should be good to go.
Thanks you for taking your time to read this. Oh and I"m only 13 so if you don't trust a 13 year old please don't follow these insructions and report to a GM about what to do. I did this and it worked. Just trying to help those people that keep on asking me stupud question.

Thank you,
GM_Murdock
I have an Awesome Computer system. 2 Gigs of DDR2, AMD 64 Bit Processor, Nvidia 7600GT
I do not believe it is my system.. I have had the Buffer overrun error also in the past But only once. In some Computers low end computers this may be the case.. But not in mine.
It happened when Fiesta was acting strange..

This issue has been around before and had been fixed, but it seems to be back with the latest patch.

I had this same problem a long time ago, I had tried a simple reboot but the problem persisted. I was able to fix it by uninstalling the "Microsoft .Net Framwork" (all of them) and rebooting my pc.
I was able to reinstall the Microsoft .Net Framwork at a later date without the issue comming up again.
I posted this on another thread but i'll repost it here since more ppl seem to be getting the problem.

I've just started having this problem, wondering if, since these posts are a few days old, everyone else has figured out how to fix it?

I'm now getting this error too. I have no programs running in the background, have recently cleared my computer of unwanted/temporary/unused files so I now have 70% of my 147 gigs of memory and on top of that I have 2 gigs of RAM. So I doubt it is my computer.
I've done a lot of things suggested on this forum, to no avail.
I've even contacted my Techie friends for their help and wisdom. Its not working still.
I would REALLY like some help here, I don't want to stop playing after only 6 days of being a member. =(

well, i used to play Bioshock at highest quality settings on my AMD 64 X2 3000+ at 3GHZ, 3Gig virtual, 2Gig DDRAM2 and ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro with 512 MB DDRAM2...
if fiesta needs more than that, i'll do just ONE thing and that is:
deinstall fiesta!
ok, it's as easy for me to do that, as it is for a GM to blame our systems for that error, but in my position it's the ONLY thing i can do...
maybe the programmers check their work, when all the servers run empty :D

This started happening to me today too.Exactly the same.I even went on my daughters comp and it still did it to my charater. She logged in with her own and nothing, and nothing happened to my higher level one in Elderine.Just my lvl 16 and only in Roumen town.My husband re installed fiesta and increased visual mem,but no,still the same.I find it insulting for GM's to suggest its our comps, when there are at least 200 complaints on the same day!!!

*sigh* my one chance of the day to play Fiesta, and it's broken again.
I would like to add that I was also in Roumen when this whole buffer thing started happening. Has anyone tried scrolling really fast to another town (before getting kicked off again)?
UPDATE: Turning off chat/shout doesn't work :(

That seems to indicate that this issue with system kicks while shop open, is much more pervasive than the forum activity would seem to indicate.

matter a fact as soon as i log on the buffer thing shows up or it also says that my computer cant conect to the server, what can i do, can the ppl who fix this game *** it now?

01-16-2008, 03:24 PM
And it's still happening and no, it's not our pc's. Mostly it happens in Roumen but I have had the buffer override happen elsewhere as well. Usually can't get back on no matter what, for hours.

I don't have time to scroll or walk out, and shutting off the chat/shout did nothing.
All my chars were in Roumen :(
Guess I'll go look for something fun to do until Outspark wakes up and stops blaming our computers.

I'll try to help with my computer knowledge, if one of the users with faster PC's could please attempt the following things. If the problem still arises I'll see what else I can do.
#1 Delete Fiesta Completely
-- Do this by going to add/remove programs and selecting Fiesta then removing it.
#2 Defragment Your Computer
#3 (Most Important) Clear your Pagefile.
http://www.metacafe.com/watch/865837/how_to_clear_pagefile/
If you've done all 3 of these things, please test a few more.
#4 Run the game in windowed mode.
#5 Run the game at a lower resolution.
Let me know how all the test's come out.

It's not the computers, or so many people wouldn't be having this problem simultaneously.
I'm mad now, it finally connected long enough for me to scroll to Elderine, and I was fighting in MT and the game was being really glitchy so I logged out. The next time I logged in, it gave me the buffer message within a minute. Now when I try to relog Fiesta just shuts down as soon as I enter my name and password. Grr!

I've had this problem once or twice, but I found a way that works me in particular. Using task manager, I shut down some unnecessary processes (what I believed might have some part in the issue as it said the buffer was overrunning). After canceling about four or more, it works well, and I haven't been forced to shut down like that ever since.
Try this out, maybe?

Well, if after playing Fiesta for almost 3 months (not a lot, but enough to get to know the game) I had never received a problem, error, etc., then why do i receive it now. I don't know if it matters, but having the same problem as many people isn't common. (HINT HINt)

I agree. I've been running this game for about 6 months with no problem and now I am just starting to get it at the same time as my friends are reporting. We all have uninstalled and reinstalled to try to fix but it doesn't seem to work. I'm no expert, but I do not believe this is a client side issue.
