I downloaded it, signed in, made a character, and tried to start the game, but the screen went black like it was trying to load something and just never fixed itself though I could hear noises like I was warping into wherever I was.

welcome to the club bud, your not the only one facing this problem, and updating graphic cards does not help at all, since they are up to date. In other words windows vista is been buggy or the graphic cards that are coming with windows vista are not working. This happened in closed beta with fiesta as well, nevertheless it was fixed with a patch, more likely there will be a patch to solve this issue hopefully' in the future we can't do more than wait patiently until this issue is resolved keke ^^ meanwhile why don't you learn japanese like me! keke :D
