View Full Version : What are your theories on drops?

Has anyone figured out how drops generally occur?
These are the options I came up with:
1. Drops are 100% completely random. I don’t think this is actually possible to code. We know that certain mobs drop leather, wood, fairy powder, and soul stone fragments at certain levels. I have verified that you can get fairy powder, aloe, and strawberries at higher levels. I have never received a wood, leather, soul stone fragment, or red demon blood by killing a mob after it turns blue and runs.
2. A set amount of mobs hold a given drop at any given time. For example, if you mob all the fairies in the map past Colorna, it should yield X fairy powders. The fairy powders obtained from single killing should be the exact same amount if no other people are on the map and all fairies are killed in order. While this may be true for some drops, it is definitely not true for things like Xen stones. I do not think this theory is accurate either.
3. When you kill a mob, upon respawn, a random number of mobs spawn with a random order according to the preprogrammed chance (combinations, percentages?). The program would fetch the available items from a pool that is xen-wide, mob, or map specific and distribute them according to the odds to x% of mobs that receive an item to drop (not sure if it is fixed or variable – anyone want to test?). So, let’s say leathers have a 2.5% chance of dropping and there are 50 mobs on a given map(1.25), 0, 1, or 2 and if lucky more would drop leather if you mobbed or single killed the entire map without any interruptions. I am sure I am missing something to the equation since the drop rate seems to increase when you duo. Try single killing everything including hard hitters in North Eir and then try duoing. Maybe this is my mind playing tricks on me, but I seem to get more drops. This seems to be the closest to how drops actually occur. However, theoretically, you should definitely see things like multiple xen drops or 8 leathers collected on a single pass as rare variances. I have not seen anything like this yet, but maybe someone has OBSERVED this without someone pulling a fast one.
4. Some combination of the above.
5. None of the above.
Maybe you have your own theories or have actually experimented. I think that figuring this out or getting closer to how the programming actually works will improve collection methods and farming. Some long-term experiments would be very interesting. Experiments could include items per aoe trip, exp per aoe trip, rares drop rates, etc. Heck, this could be your science project. I believe that hard data with good, unbiased interpretation can help us develop better methods for increased collection or rare items. This also includes party techniques and such for better experience and more lvl 96 drops. Just look at how librarians have maximized lvl 1 basement of the library. Super fast collection, good drops, etc. I wonder if that can translate more to non-dungeon maps, all be it not as fast due to map design

After candy run yesterday, I was messing around with the monsters around Toasty and got a leather from a single hit kill on a Hawgs O.O ! Charon was there, he was also playing around with Hawgs and also got a leather drop :D Then everybody just started killing Hawgs on the map XD !
I think you have odds for each item drop based on each monster and your level.
Maybe something like at lvl 30 odds for leather drop are 5%, then it gradually decrease to 0.01% at lvl 150 :D
It also seems that when you're in a party, the odds for drops are combined in someway.
At level 100, I was only getting pots and scrolls in Edine. Then I brought my shopkeeper Stefia to party with me there, she's a xenian, and I was getting lots of gears and even Xen stones O.O !
Also, there do seem be some kind of drop limit per map and per day which would effect on drop rate. Someone said in a post that they had better leather drops in the morning... And it's looks like it's actually true, I tested it myself.

Hmm, I can sometimes go home for lunch and have had quiet a bit of luck farming on my lunch break. My lunch is about 10 AM server time.

Drops occur for any level. It just takes more kills the fulfill the ratio, because the drop rate lowers as per your character level versus the monster level.
As my Warlord, it takes maybe 4 or 5 kills of Houd!ck, but he STILL drops Red Demon Blood.
I haven't tested the other enemies in the Mines/Cave because they are rather quick and difficult to kill with a melee-type character, but I'm positive that drops will fall no mater what.
As for how they are based, that's easy to explain:
Let's say for example that first we must decide what is the chance that something drops.
Drop (%)(EnemyLVL+/-0) = 35% (the +/- is character level versus monster 'level')
Next, we base what will drop depending on the location.
Drop List (Trakian Path)
(Random)(40-100) Kron = 10%
(Weak) Hp Potion = 10%
(Weak) Mp Potion = 10%
Cherry = 10%
Squash = 10%
Aloe = 10%
Grape = 10%
(Random)(Weapon) = 10%
(Random)(Armor) = 10%
Yellow Watermelon = 8%
Xen Stone = 2%
Of course these are fictitious numbers, though it gets the point across of how drops CAN work (not really sure myself, but it's an educated guess on the matter)
EDIT: Why we can't use the monsters' names in our forum is still a mystery.. -_-

Ok, so leather and RDB drops are verified, so I suppose this applies to everything as I previously suspected. I killed Houd?ck 10 consecutive times with no drops and killed over 150 star bears consecutively with no leather drops.
What I don't understand is that left to probability, there should be examples of multiple rares dropping from one mob at the same time like 2 xen stones or 5 leathers from a mob, yet I have never seen this. That seems logical to me if there is a respawn and spawn would have x% chance of having a rare drop from map list of available items. There must be an item cap.

they still drop. I've gotten wood from the Hawg's (or whatever they're called), even though I'm ubber over lvl'ed. It just takes a lot of them them to keel. *shrugs* which really isn't so hard at a higher lvl when it only takes one or two hits to kill them.

I think its a combination of lvl and a percentage chance for each drop. There are times you get two drops from the same monster after all. I honestly don't think its so many for a map, or a time frame or anything. Just a flat percent. Kingdom Hearts has that kind of drop system. The game guide even tells you what all the percents are.

Something i have always been wondering about is:
1. If a player kills a monster and it drops something rare(xen wood leather), would it also have dropped it if i was the one who killed the monster.
2. Does the monster have to have a certain requirement to drop a xen, for example: does a monster who killed a player have a higher chance of dropping a xen? or is it the player who has to have a certain requirement to find a xen? or maybe its both.
I often wondered bout these things but there its impossible to find the answer to my first question, and second if the monster and/or player have to have a certain requirement it will be very hard to find out what that is.
I did find a 6ap lvl 16 helmet speed and cane(forgot the name) while farming butter from giant poyo's ones. so even for high lvls its possible to find rare drops from low lvl mobs but the chances are low.

On my ranger I was messing around in the mines, and 2 (TWO) Hypermills dropped for me from one mob. I think this is the only time I've ever seen this happen. Darn, I shoulda screenied it, you guys probably don't believe me.
I think the only other item I've EVER seen drop 2 or more at a time is Red Demon Blood.

for me, the best drop rates i get seem to be when the mobs are just turning white and just turning blue. i always seem to get lots of ap6's/xens/rares. of course this could just be coincidence.

Yes, I'll confirm this. After the quest-drop system came out, I went on a Red Demon Blood excursion for a buddy, I being on my Scout, and when I found and killed Houd!ck, it gave me the quest drop AND 2 Red Demon Bloods (a single drop, but in quantity of two).
Another time when I was messing around on my Apprentice, I killed a Guron and it dropped a Xen Stone, A Yellow Watermelon, A Book of Skill, AND Aloe all at once.
It's possible! o_O
(By the way, a screenie is too easy to shoot down as 'proof' because you would have to have a series of shots showing the kill as a before-and-after slideshow, otherwise critics will just discredit it...)

This has happened to me and my friend to on our ssf farmers only once to me but my friend found 6 hypermills with only 3 drops(before and after todays update). as far as i know hypermill is the only items that gives 2 drops from 1 monster all other wings items only give 1 drop

I believe Varn's exemple makes a lot of sense! And yeah, when I used to go farm moons for my alt on my archer, I had some fun killing Halloween MoonBears on the map and I did got 2-3 leathers drop and my archer atm was over 100+. During pet quest, there is a step that requires us to kill some fire fairies (I think) and most of the time, I end up with a fairy powder on my priest who at that time might have been 100+ too. I think they still drop their rarest items though, fairly low rate... Oh and I remember getting even Yellow Watermelon from blue mobs sometimes xD

This is to verify that it is possible to get more than 1 drop from a mob. Some head slapping ones that did this are the Tree monster in Beltranin and the Reindeer and Santa X. As for regular maps, I have gotten multiple drops from one mob many times. I have gotten two hypermill drops from one mob, kron plus scroll drops, but I have never gotten rare drops like 2 YWM, 2 Xens, etc. from the same mob. Multiple drops seem to occur more frequently from my experience when you are killing a red mob. I get frequent double drops in mystra with my apprentice and have even gotten some triple drops. Again, I am talking about single killing one mob and the mob dropping more than 2 things and not an aoe kill. I have heard about people getting two xens from one aoe kill, but have never observed it.
As for rare drops from blue mobs, the subjective evidence presented appears to verify that blue mobs will drop rare items still. I still don't think we have enough evidence to get an idea of if and how drop rate is effected. Basically, I am not sure if your level actually effects the drop rate of items or not. It appears that it does, but I think we need some experiments to verify.

This does seem closest to how drops occur, but do you mean that upon respawn each monster receives an item out of a pool to drop. Cause this would mean that it doesn't matter who kills it it would drop the same item. Like i said in my first post this is something i always wondered about.
I doubt that if a donkey from titanus plains drops a xen when a lvl 50 player kills it, that it would have dropped the same xen if a lvl 100 player would be the one that killed it, of course there is no way to prove if this would happen or not.
I think the item that a monster drops is decided after or at the moment that it is killed and that the item that drops depends on alot of things like what lvl the player is and how long it took to kill the monster etc etc.

I have heard about people getting two xens from one aoe kill, but have never observed it.
I have personally watched Charon get THREE Xen Stones from one AoE (not even the entire map) pull of Turmeit.
