Kill Stealing - Allowed, ban-worthy, or somewhere in between

Hi all...

In other MMO's I've played the act of kill-stealing was a banable offense. In this game, however, I've seen and/or been the victim of kill-stealing quite frequently. Right now it's not really a big deal to me (since we're still in CBT and I'm of the belief that a wipe will occur), but when the game goes OBT/Live I'll be a little more frustrated with this if it continues.

My question, though, is what SoS's stance on kill-stealing is. Is it perfectly fine? Tollerated, but considered ill-mannered or rude? Or flat out dis-allowed?

If anyone can provide the answer as well as where the answer was obtained from I'd be appreciative.

I'm not sure how SoS is set up since I haven't played it yet. However, I do know that in Fiesta, while it is considered bad manners to do it, it is allowed. Only the person dealing the killing blow gets credit xp and the loot drops. It's too bad there's no tag system in place like some MMOs where when you hit something it's flagged as yours. :confused:

Ya i know how that is wish people would understand if you look like your alright they should leave you alone. I can see some times it gets confuseing to people becuase some times people want to help some one else. My self included i well help some one in need who looks about dieing but i try to tell by if the person is running away, running in circles, or really pot spamming lol.

I think new people should understand if some one is fighting a monster then leave it alone get your own there is alot. Speically during events when good stuff comes out just leave the weak event monsters along. Bigger ones and those witch people group together and fight i can see thats alright but you i think you should know better to fight or leave alone.

You been a noob:
-When you see some one fighting a monster and you wait at end to kill it
-You fight a monster you can see clerly been beat by the other person
-You team up with a high group just to get items and do no work

You helping:
-Killing or fighting one of the many monsters chasing some one
-You see some one running around been chased. Killing that monster is a ok
-Healing, buffing, or helping some one who is spamming/running away

I think enacting a 'tagging' function is a must in ANY mmorpg. There will always be people that will abuse/misuse/exploit functions in the game that allow them to. If you leave it open for anyone who gets the kill gets the credit and loot, people will wander around waiting for someone to engage and do the damage, and then steal the kill. If you leave loot to be open to scavengers (Asheron's Call early beta), people will follow you and steal your loot. People will abuse anything they can get away with, and by not preventing them, you are saying it's an acceptable practice.

well although i dont mind to much but i hate when im killing something and a person steals the kill and then they get the drops and when the drops are rareits happened to me twice makes me so angry although once a person kill steals from me i think they deserve it in return so i ks from them

At city spawn events, when all the low lvl mobs are dead...we(my group and along with the other guys) get ks'd or at least an attempt to ks like crazy.

Though it looks like it doesn't matter,but in fact we do get less exp (just a little bit though).

That sounds fair... So if you're being KSed call Steam =D (I doubt he meant it like that but still)


I find KSing fairly annoying especially in the town events. I'm an aco and don't get drops really ever but when my party does the majority of the killing and 1 or 2 people grab the drops (Xen stones mostly) it gets annoying (Last event my party was 3 Archers lol so they aren't close enough to the mobs to get drops right away)

Another option is a genuine PVP mode in the wilds... if someone is helping you out because you seem genuinely distressed, fine. If you try to take my kill without warning, and ignore my protest, I may decide to attack you.

Thats the thing, and i dont mean to sound racist but... Most of them mean to do it!! and from what ive seen brazilians are usally the ones to monopolize the KS industry. Infact there isnt a game i know of where they dont do somthing bad in major numbers.

Well, to be fair, even a tag system has it's abuses. I really hate it when there is a tag system and then some low level person wanders into a higher level area and purposefully trains their tagged mobs onto so you have to kill for them. *shrugs* I think most people don't KS if given a choice and if someone KSes it's better to just port away from them which granted doesn't help in an event situation. :(

Kill stealing is a perfectly normal thing. You know when their is a ****y person who think he is better then you and call you a noob? You can ks, Besides ksing does come with it's fall backs. If You hit a monster and they hit it you leave and run to the next monster, Then if he hits that you repeat the step. Soon he will have more monster then he can handle and be sent runner, Then you wait till he dies, That useually happen to a rouge or archer.

yeah, but that doesn't work when they just stand there watching, and only join in when the monster gets down to 5% health.

i think it'll be a major problem in the first days of OB, there will be millions of Xenians in Brynhild Trisects, they'll kill all monstesrs around, and wait for more to spawn, as soon as a new monster spawns there will be something like 20 people jumping on it.

XI implemented a system called claiming, for MPKing (Multi-Player Killing) was a horrible issue with Gods, where one linkshell (guild) would try to steal the claim on an NM (Notorious Monster) to get the drop. XI pretty much made it impossible to MPK, introducing complex spawning rules, changing lottery spawn to pop-spawn, and now the only place MPKing becomes a problem really is sky, sea, and dynamis. (higher-level areas. Well, highest level. 75. highest you can go.) Perhaps SoS will implement something like this over time.

hmm, in RO i found the timecap for loot drops a good idea... to explain it i'll put it in a situation:
"player 1" attacks a monster, after he kills the monster the loot the monster drops has a timecap where "player 1" is the only one allowed to pick up the loot at that certain timecap but if he chooses to leave it, it can be picked up by other people after the timecap expires

We have a 5 second claim-right for stuff you kill in SoS. Pity it's useless in Spawn City due to lag.

I think the bigger issue is that new players don't know what kill stealing is, so they wander around "helping" people untill someone gets mad and they realize they shouldn't do it anymore.

I give kill stealers teh benefit of the doubt, until it becomes blatant.
- At first they must be a noob and not know any better. Politely inform them that stealing kills is not a cool thing to do.
- If they continue then I make sure they die, by dragging loads of beasties to them, or I ignore them and move on.

I killed 50+ PEOPLE because they KSed myself, or a friend. It IS annoying and the only reason I quit was because rider told me to. I admit, if it continues to happen to me I may be banned for PKing.

Pking is way worse than Ksing. You're screwing around with people's hard earned exp and de-leveling them.

I can say that about a lot of people.... and about any race of people. Certain races stick out because theyre blantantly obvious and talk about it.... but Brazilians aren't at the top my friend. That being said though its done slightly more by some people then others a lot of people do it regardless of race.
