Well first of all,I just started this game yesterday. I got this game to take a break from flyff for a bit. Playing one game for so long has left me completely clueless about how this game works lol.
Currently, I need help locating the wherabouts of squash and spotted mushrooms...or the mob who drops them.
Also, any links to useful guides would be most appreciated. I tried looking for said guides on these forums and didn't find anything too amazing or helpful and I am unaware of any good fansites. I wan't to read as much information as I can so I don't mess up my character =P
Thanks in advance and I hope to play with some of you in the future!

Hello and welcome ^^
Unfortunately, I'm not too familiar with this game, but I'd suggest looking through the Gameplay (http://outspark.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=109) section for Stickied Guides. You may be able to find something in there of help.
And maybe someone will swing by here and be able to answer any other questions you have as well ^^.

Squash and spotted mushroom are dropped I believe by rabbits, crown slimes, and other monsters in the first 3 or so maps after the beginner maps. As for guides, they're a bit scattered but there are a few places you can look:
Sijar's guide of guides - http://www.outspark.com/forums/showthread.php?t=99239
The class discussion forums are a great place to look concerning builds and equipment for specific classes - http://www.outspark.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=76
And some shameless plugging here, SolsticePlayer is SoS's oldest fansite and we keep a guides database and world map running. The guides a members-only but it's free sign up, we just do it for the sake of knowing who's dropping by =P http://solsticeplayer.prophpbb.com/

Are drop rates extremely low? I've been playing for hours and have only gotten 3 spotted shrooms...

I'd like to say that the drop rates for items in general are pretty good especially for the first maps. But because there are so many different types of drops, it might seem like it'll take a long time to collect, let's say, those spotted mushrooms.
In my opinion, those first quests aren't worth the reward. You can do them if you want, but you'd be able to get a lot more experience and kron by just training.

That's another thing I'm totally lost on,there's such a large variety of items and I have no idea about their function.

As a packrat by nature, I try to keep as many things as I can. For restoring your HP and MP, I suggest to stick with the pots that you can get from the item shops, and keep all the fruits and vegetables and other plant thingies that drop. Most of the items that don't seem to have a function other than make you heavier are most likely house items, which you can use to redeem various pieces of furniture for a house.
So my recommendation is to just keep everything that you find and use only pots for restoration purposes... until your storage is full. Then you'll need to do some prioritizing. :x

I can't seem to locate any crafting guides and the forum search option seems to not be functional...any help with that?
I have countless wires,bars,gems,stones,cottons....and I am beginning to question whether I'll ever know what they do.
