Two things come to mind. One: What level are you. The first house is only good through I think level 25.
Two: You can't rest to close to a NPC or other minihouse. Irecommend you try resting in an unpopulate area like a low level hunting ground.
And Finally, you are using the Home key (or any other shortcut you have set) for your house, right.

When you write something and the message-bar (where you write your text in) is still active you can't use your home too. ;)
