Fighter + Mage: Best
In PvE: While the fighter mobs the monsters and protects his beautiful (and squishy) mage wifey with his manly chest and the Mock+Devastate skill, the mage assists him with her Nova+Inferno.....reducing his burden of tanking them all for too long and thus.....killing the mobs before her hubby could use any other skills
In PvP: Their combined STR and INT can make their opponents beg for a cleric to save their ***! When a fighter is having a hard time killing a full END +9 fighter/cleric or an irritating kiting archer, his beloved wifey can penetrate their armors with her magic and also.....slowing down an archer with an ice spell.....and also when a few bloodthirsty axe-fighters try to kill his beloved wifey.....she can lure them into a nova trap with her beautiful body.....slowing them down while her hubby comes to her rescue and immobilize them with his deva.....thus.....killing them mercilessly in a nova+inferno field

Fighter + Cleric: Moderate
In PvE: While their manly build makes them fearless to death......their co-operation is not as effective as the fighter + mage co-operation! They can mob fearlessly but at the end of the day.....the person doing the most work is the fighter hubby while the cleric wifey can only ease his burden by healing him (and maybe herself if the light proves to be more powerful than his Mock) plus.....STR cleric or not.....she can only kill 1 at a time.....just like her fighter hubby does.....
In PvP: Bringing a cleric to a battlefield is like sending her to a pit of fire to be burnt.....plus.....clerics spoils the fun in PvP thanks to their buffs and heals.....anyway.....as you all know.....clerics are the worst class in PvP.....only thing great is their sheer invincibility and other class would laugh at them while they desperately try to kill their prey with that hammer.....oh well....not much to say about how this duo would work on a PvP situation.....it's pretty obvious

Fighter + Archer: Worst
In PvE: It's either the fighter mobs or the archer kites.....when the graceful archer kites the mobs for her hubby, he could do nothing but use Demoralizing Hit to reduce dmg on the mobs on her and also.....when the fighter tanks the mobs.....the archer can only poison the mobs and kill them slowly which barely reduces his burden as he have to tank the mobs longer.....resulting lots of using pots and stones.....and worst thing is.....not all mobs are affected by poison
In PvP: Nothing an archer can help the manly fighter in PvP except for their DoT skills but if there is a cleric on the opponent's side.....archer's DoT becomes useless.....and to make it worst.....when the barbaric fighters goes after the archer, she starts running with her nimble feet kiting for her life, giving her hubby a really hard time trying to save her.....

Note: This is my opinion really.....it might differ from yours but feel free to post your opinion here.....and I did not make a Fighter + Fighter because I'm only interested in experimenting on how a fighter co-ordinates with a different class

True enough...but you don't mention the PVE-and-PvP-dominating Archer/cleric duo.

Cleric runs ahead, archer kites, then cleric kite heals whenever the archer is hit. Nothign can stop it short of them running to a dead end with an angry +9 axe fighter behind them.

I do agree that Archer + Fighter is rather horrid. They're complete opposites. Archers are made for movement and evasion, fighters are made for tanking and damage. Kind of hard to find a decent balance, although, a few friends and I picked up a few ways that are decent.
