View Full Version : The easiest puzzle ever, if you have a brain

I don't like introductions, so I'm just gonna say the puzzle, and whoever gets it right, well we will know they have a brain ;3

You wake up to find yourself in a dungeon, with 2 doors, and 2 guards, 1 guard....guarding each door. Behind you, you see a note, "one door leads to death, the other, to freedom. You may ask one and only one question, to one and only one guard. One guard lies, the other tells the truth."

so, what would you ask which guard? the liar and truth-teller along with the right door will be switched each time, and there are 2 ways to bypass, being very lucky, or intelligent enough to solve this little puzzle.

state which guard you ask, the one to the left or the one to the right.

"Is the guard that always tells the truth guarding the door to freedom?"

If the guard replies "yes", take his door
If he replies "no", take the other one

Ask the liar, go to the opposite door

Ask "If I asked your the truth teller what the good door is, what would he say?"

If you ask the truth-telling brother, he will point to the bad door, because this is what the lying brother would point to.

Alternatively, if you ask the lying brother, he will also point to the bad door, because this is NOT what the truth-telling brother would point to.

So whichever door is pointed to, you should go through the other one.

theres many variants of this, the truth tellers paradox.

This one is easy.

Since you can only ask one question. You ask either guard "Ask the other guard to tell you which is the correct door and then you tell me what he said"

and you pick the opposite door the guard tells you

because one guard will always lie, while the other tells you the truth

exactly, the lying brother will tell you which one its not x)
so what does that leave? xD

EDIT:if you happen to ask the lying brother, he'll go and ask his brother the truthful one, but the lying brother will tell you to go through the wrong door....because he lies

if you happen to ask the truthful brother...he'll ask his brother the liar and the liar will tell him the wrong door, and since he's truthful, he'll point you to the wrong door aswell because that's what his brother told him

I guess the condition here is that each guard always tells the truth or a lie regardless of whom he talks to.

Then, expanding the notion previously defined by other posters, I would ask either guard: "Can you ask the other guard if he's guarding the door to freedom?"

Now it's necessary to impose another condition: are you able to hear the other guard's answer?

If such is satisfied and the guard relays the answer back to you, you can tell if he lies or not (simply by comparing his answer to the other guard's). Thus you can then easily choose the appropriate door.

To make this a bit more fun, that is, a different condition is given: suppose you aren't allowed to hear the other guard's answer (e.g. the guards are positioned far away from each other so one has to leave you momentarily to ask the other one and you're not allowed to follow him). This is a dead end because you're effectively excluding the other guard from the puzzle, so in essence, you have changed the puzzle and will need to refine the requirements. The premise is, of course, that question must not be compounded, e.g. a maximum of two actions are required (my question utilises a conditional clause).

You don't need to know, if the guard says "no", you shouldn't pick his door, independent on whether he tells the truth or not.

You genius!
But before you can go any further, if i remember correctly the question was you allow to ask only ONE question to only ONE guard!

The question i would ask will be "can you open the door behind you?"
simple and stupid XD

look carefully in this question..it says that you can ONLY ASK ONE QUESTIONit never said that you can only say one thing to the gaurd. So instead of only asking him a question, you could just say a statement or tell him what to do like e.g.:
"Gaurd, open that door and go in it and tell me whats in it"
"Gaurd, tell me if your the gaurd that always tells the truth because if you dont ill bust a cap right into your *ss and make your life a living hell"
(this one only works if ur a guy..but you can do opposite if your a girl)"Gaurd, are you g*y?" *wait for reply* then do some s*xual stuff and see if he is telling the truth then ask him which door is the door to freedom. Then if he's lieing go to the other door and if he's not go to that door. [!!!WARNING-You should only do this if you are desperate to get out of this dungeon!!]
Also with this you shouldnt get any problems with the gaurd not replying because its not a question. Since this wasnt really defined enough it never said that the gaurd will not respond to you if u ask any other thing besides a question.

Option 1

From the question you can ask 2 questions one to each guard... "I would ask the guard on the right is your door on the right" if he reply yes then i would know he tells the truth. THen I would ask the other guard "is your door safe?" His reply would be yes. But i know hes a liar so i would go to the right door.

option 2

Same exact process but if you ask the person on the right is your door safe and they say no go threw the door

xD i would ask one of them either one to go distract the other. while he does that i will check his door if it leads to safety, LEAVE. orr I just stay and grind ;D

"Is the guard that always tells the truth guarding the door to freedom?"

If the guard replies "yes", take his door
If he replies "no", take the other one

saim um you dont know which is lying so you take his door saying yes and he could have lied

Hamster-man
08-02-2009, 11:09 AM
ii would just ask them what color shoes am I wearing, if they say the truth ill take their door; thers a 50/50 chance of getting it, 1/2 5/10 xDD goodluck!!

defiant_saim
08-03-2009, 04:42 AM
saim um you dont know which is lying so you take his door saying yes and he could have lied

But if the lying guard said "yes", it means that the guard that always tells the truth is not guarding the door to freedom. So it's the lying guard that is guarding the door to freedom. You can hence safely take his door.
