Chapter 1:
Another schoolday has ended and Ellie was just on her way home. She was walking slow with her head turned to the ground. She stayed longer then she should have. She walked around the school many times just to kill some time. But when the school closed, she had no other option anymore then to go home. This was the most terrible moment of the day for her. She walked as slow as she could and checked the time every minute. Even thought she wanted to take as many time as she could, she had to be home before five. That was the latest time she could be back from school and she would get scolded if she was to late. In the far end of the street, she could already see her house. The house wasn't big and the garden seemed to be nothing more then an ordinary piece of desert. Anybody who would pass by would think that it would be empty till they looked threw the window and saw people walking.
Ellie took a big breath when she was standing before the ugly house. She looked threw the window but didn't see her father. A little bit of hope came in her mind. Maybe he is out, drinking with his friends again, she thought. She took the key from the pocket of her jacket and opened the door slowly. She walked on her toes to not make any sound. She opened the door to the living room and looked inside. She didn't saw anyone. She walked further in and still there was no sign that anybody was home. 'I am home.' she said. Still no reaction. Finally Ellie relaxed her body and walked towards the kitchen. She took a snack and moved to the living room. There she sat down and ate slowly.
Suddenly she heared a sound from upstairs. Ellie jumped up from the chair she was sitting on and runned towards the kitchen. Fastly she hid the snack she was eating and cleaned the sink. 'Ellie is that you?' a male voice sounded from above. Ellie already heard footsteps on the stairs. 'Uhm, yes it is me.' she answered. Not soon after she answered a man stood in the door opening. He was dressed in a short pants and an ugly looking shirt. You could see that he hadn't shaved himself this day. 'I thought you had to work today dad.' Ellie said softly. 'I didn't want to go today, so I said i was sick.' her father answered. Ellie wanted to say something but shut her mouth before the words could leave her throat.
'Why isn't there dinner yet.' her father asked grumpy. 'It is only five dad. I didn't had time to prepare dinner yet.' Ellie answered him. 'I don't care if it is only five! I am hungry now and I wanna eat. It is your job to make dinner whenever I want you to!' he screamed in her face. While he was screaming he came so close to her that Ellie could smell his breath. It smelled to alcohol and Ellie could tell he had drunk not just one bottle of beer. She knew that she could better just do what he wanted from her. 'Of course, I am sorry dad. I will prepare it right away.' while saying it she faced the ground. She heard him mumbling, but couldn't understand what he was saying.
Fastly Ellie got everything she needed for dinner and prepared it as fast as she could. Her dad had started to watch tv and the sound was on so loud that Ellie couldn't hear herself chopping the leek. She peeled the potatoes and cooked them in a big pan. Then she prepared the chickenwings and baked them. In her mind it took long before dinner was ready and she could tell that her dad was getting more grumpy with the minute. Finally the dinner was ready and she could serve it on a plate to her dad who was still watching the tv. 'There you go dad, here is your dinner.' she said while serving him the plate with the food. She saw her dad looking at the plate.
Ellie just wanted to turn around and get her own plate of food, when she heard the sound of a plate that touched the ground and broke in pieces. She turned around. 'I am not going to eat this! Who said I wanted to eat leek!' he screamed while he got up and walked towards Ellie. Ellie made herself small in a reflex. 'I am sorry, I am sorry! I thought you liked leeks.' she said in the hope he would calm down. But before she knew a big fist had hit her cheek and she was falling to the ground. 'Dad no! Please stop!' she screamed in panic, but he didn't stop. His threatening steps came closer and he picked her up. In panic Ellie tried to get away but her father didn't let her go. He kept her on her feet and pushed Ellie to the wall. His hand was on her throat and Ellie had troubles breathing. 'Dad please, let go.' Ellie begged, but this made him even more angry. She felt three more hits in her face. Soon she had the metallic taste of blood in her mouth.
In her head it took ages till her dad finally stopped. 'Go to your room! I don't want to see you for the rest of the day!' he screamed to her. Fastly Ellie runned away from him, scared he would start again. She went past the fridge and got some ice before leaving to her room. Her lip felt swollen and she could see a pruple ring around her eye in the mirror. She took a deep breath and helt the ice against her painful lip. Ellie felt unwell from the blood she has swallowed. She lied down on her bed and watched her room. It was clean as always. She sighed and closed her eyes for a bit.
Ellie hadn't always lived like this. When she was little she lived a happy life together with her father and mother. She even had a big sister. But everything changed on one stormy night. Her mother and sisters had been in a car on there way home. They had been on a horsemarket. Not because they wanted to buy a horse, but because her mother and sister both loved horses. But on their way back there was a storm. The rain poured hard against the glass and the road wasn't clearly visible. It had been hard to look threw the window. Then just before them a tree had come down. Her mother couldn't react soon enough and she had crushed in to it. Her sister had been dead right then. Her mom had been brought to the hospital, but she didn't survive either. Since then Ellie lived alone with her father. Her father had been depressed for long and had became an alcoholic. The beating had started with little things. First it was just one hit and it would have stopped, it wasn't even hard back then. But it got more worse and worse till the point where she was now. On one side she could understand her father. Losing his wife and daughter wasn't easy. It brought a lot of frustration. Because of that she hadn't told anyone about it and always hid the bruises and scratches she had. On the other side she wanted the beatings to stop. Not only because of the pain that it broguht, she just wanted her dad to love her. That was all.
Ellie opened her eyes again. It seemed she had fallen asleep, because it was already dark outside. She was lucky that her dad hadn't found her sleeping. She stood up. Her lip had swollen up quite a bit and she had troubles breathing threw her mouth. She walked to the window and places herself in the chair next to it. She watched outside and looked at the stars. She wanted to distract herself by looking for the heavenly bodies big bear and little bear. But much distraction didn't came from it. She sighed and thought back to the time everything was still normal. Suddenly she saw a falling star. Ellie looked up. Fast she made a wish. 'Lovely star that has fallen to earth, please grant this one and only wish. Give me a place where I am save. Where I can life without being scared.' Ellie whispered while putting her hands together and closing her eyes. After she had spoken out her wish she opened her eyes again and kept staring outside to the stars.
The next morning Ellie woke up early. She couldn't remember falling asleep and she was still sitting on the chair with her head against the window. She stretched her body and walked to the window. Her eye was half closed and her lip was swollen up and red. Even her cheek was a bit swollen. 'Like I thought. I can't go to work like this.' Ellie sighed while saying this and picked up her phone. She called the number of the supermarket she works and made her voice sound weak. She told her boss that she wasn't feeling well and that she needed to rest for a while. Her boss said that she indeed didn't sound well and that she should rest. She hang up after thanking her and got herself some clothes. She had to be carefull while putting her shirt over her head to not touch her lip. She walked down and made some bread for herself. After an hour even her dad came downstairs. He looked at her but didn't said anything and avoided her as much as he could. She knew this was a sign that he was sorry, even thought he never said it. After is breakfast her father left the house.
Also Ellie left hte house soon after that and walked towards the grave of her mother. When she got there she kneeled down before her grave and placed her hands aainst eachother. Ellie wanted to cry but swallowed away the tears.'I miss you. I miss you so much. I miss you so much mom. What must I do? I can't keep up with this much longer. What should I do.' Ellie asked hoping her mother would hear her. But there came no answer, not that the expected to get one. She bowed her head down and couldn't hold back the tears anymore. He hair fall down across her face and the tears fall to the ground.
Suddenly she felt something wet and cold against her cheek. She looked up to see what it was and stared in the eyes of a puppy. 'Hello little one, are you lost?' Ellie asked the puppy while whiping away her tears. The only answer she got was a wagging tail and a lick. She took the puppy and holded it in her arms. She looked around her, but didn't see anyone who seemed to be the owner. In fact, there wasn't anyone on the graveyard. She looked for a penning, but the puppy wasn't even wearing a collar. 'Where did you come from?' Ellie asked the animal.
Then the puppy jumped out of her arms and ran a little bit forward before looking back and waiting. 'Why does it seems you want me to follow you?' Ellie asked more to herself then the puppy, but the puppy answered with an little bark. 'Oke, I will follow you.' she said and followed the puppy. Everytime it ran forward and then stopped till Ellie came near again. The way of the puppy led her to just outside the city. 'Your home can't be this way. There are no houses here.' Ellie said while looking at the puppy, but the animal insisted that she kept following him. They went in a little forest and there the puppy stopped and sat down. But when Ellie walked to him she suddenly felt weird in her head. Before she could even think of turning back her mind went black and she fall down to the ground, the puppy just a meter away of her.
A long time passed before Ellie finally opened her eyes. Her head felt heavy and at first she couldn't remember anything. It took her serveral minutes to get all of her memories back where they belonged. Only then she could remember what happened.
She looked around her but couldn't see the puppy anywhere near her. 'How long have I been asleep.' she talked to herself. She looked at the tress around her. Those didn't seem to be different then before. She stood up and walked in the direction she thought was the exit, but how further she walked, the closer the trees stood near eachother. After a while there wasn't even a path visible anymore. She tried different direction, but all of them ended in the nowhere instead of an exit. After serveral hours she finally sat down with hurting feet. Only then she noticed that she hadn't felt any pain in her face since she woke up. With her hand she went over her face, but didn't feel any bumbs. 'It is gone! My lip and eye! It is gone! But wait a second. That can't be.' she stopped herself and thought. How could this be explained. The wounds couldn't have went away all by themselves. 'Now I get it, this must be a dream. Definetly a dream. That is also the reason why I can't find an exit of this forest.' she nodded her head while saying this. It was a good explaination for all that happened.
She stood up and walked some more in an direction she think would lead somewhere. Even though she didn't find anything, she kept on walking. Hours pasted and she got tired, but didn't care, this was all a dream anyway. The forest became tight and she had to push leaves and sticks out of the way to keep on walking. 'Ouch!' she said suddenly. One of the sticks had made a deep cut in her arm. In just one second she realised that this couldn't be a dream. If this was a dream she couldn't feel pain. This just didn't fit. In a bit of a shock she sat down against a tree. All kind of thought went threw her head.
She was so busy thinking that she didn't realise that something was hiding in the bushes. With its orange-yellow eyes it was staring at her, waiting for her to show a sign that she was alive. As soon as Ellie moved, even thought it was only a movement with her arm, the big beast jumped out of the bushes and ran towards her. Ellie jumped up with a scream and started running the other side. 'Why does those things have to happen to me!' she screamed while running. She didn't even try to scream for help. She knew nobody would come in this part of the forest with a beast that big near. She couldn't even figure out what it was, she had never seen anything like it before. She kept on running but soon came to tight place of the forest. She couldn't get threw it. It was over! That was the only thing that ran threw her mind. She closed her eyes and she knew that this would be the time that she would wake up or sleep forever.
She saw a flash of light before her eyes and thought that it meant she didn't make it, but she hadn't felt any pain. After a while she finally felt brave enough to open her eyes. Before her was the beast, but it didn't seem as alive as it was a second ago. Steam came from its fur and it didn't move. Ellie was sure the animal was dead, if it even was an animal. She looked around her but couldn't see anyone.
