So my mage is now level 18, and I'm doing some killing out in the sea of greed. The creatures I'm going after are yellow to me. Basically, I have to burn all my high level cooldowns to kill anything before it kills me, and I feel like attempting to kite is a complete waste of time.

The only snare I have is frostbolt (which may or may not actually work) and then the mob is only SLIGHTLY slower than I am. By the time I finally get enough room to unload a couple more bolts, the snare is worn off, and it's already regenerated some of the damage I did.

Is there something I'm missing? I'm really frustrated, and I feel like trying to kill anything my level is more dangerous than it should be.

Use the standing six-hit combo.

Frost[MAX] - Missile[01] - Fire[MAX] - Missile[01] - Lightning[MAX] - Missile[MAX] or [01] depending how much health is left on the monster.

If you're at max casting distance, you should be good. I remember yellow mobs were easy at that level. The main problem is keeping track of your surroundings and where monsters are spawning.

Guess I can't get away with rank one MM x3 anymore, eh? What about kiting? As a mage, shouldn't I be able to kite things?

Yes, you should know how to kite. However, most ppl would just stay there and launch till the mob's dead. you can also try different combos, like at lower levels:
Magic Missile[01]-Ice[01]-Fire[The latest for your level]-Lightning[01/02]-Magic Missile[01]
And when you reach higher and have more sp:
Magic Missile[01]-Ice[01]-Magic Missile[01]-Fire[The latest for your level]-Magic Missile[01]-Lightning[01/02]-Magic Missile[01]

Idk, that's what i did.

As a mage, you honestly do more and take less damage standing still and unleashing your arsenal than you would pretending that you can kite usefully in this game. Archers can kite, because they have DoT effects. Mages can't kite, because you can't run and shoot, and the mobs move as fast as you do.

Really ? I pumped my bone imp license up to 50% just with kiting. So it's doable.

it being doable, doesn't mean its practical.

But that's not kiting... not really. I mean, yes it is technically, but my idea of kiting isn't slowing them down just long enough to get off 1 more spell. I don't know what other MMO's you've played, but in my experience, it's not really true kiting, unless you can hold them at arms length while you work them over for an extended period of time.

Kiting, in my mind, involve any strat to kill mobs while staying out of melee range. Of course strats can vary, depend on the tools you have available.
I played everquest before, and we had lots of kiting strats available, beeing (to name a few) run / rott / fear / bow kitting.
I'm hunting in CG now, and it work like a charm.

the thing is, as a mage, you can't really kite and do damage. You slow them with frostbolt, run while your CDs are coming up, shoot again, and you'll never again get out of melee, because the creature runs just as fast as you do. And while you're waiting on your cooldowns, the mob is regenerating health, because you're not attacking it.

Would be nice if "instant cast" actually meant INSTANT in this game

for fire it should be [01] because its a 6 second cooldown, next one it would be 15 seconds, so u can use Frost[max] - Missile[01]- Fire[01] -Missile[01] -Lightning[max] (highest damage is lightning)- Missile[max] then when waiting for cooldown keep using missle 01
