You put the skill icon on the hotbar and either right click it or use the corresponding number.

As you level up go to Ruby to buy your new skills.

Well You won't be making gold for a while, so I'll tell you how to make copper. anything you find on the ground, you can go and sell to a shop NPC. you do that by right clicking on the item (You can hold Shift, or ctrl to sell them all; Shift opens up a text bar so you can determine how much you want to sell, and ctrl sells all of them)

If you're going to sell your stuff to players you should be careful not to be ripped off, a lot of people put up shops where they buy things for 1c that you could actually sell to the NPC for 3c etc.
