View Full Version : [Suggestion] - Language Filter Overhaul

There's something very wrong when a player can't use certain non-offensive words or combinations of words due to the fact that it coincidentally spells out a term that some might find offensive. And to be fair, both the words Butt and *** are in the game, hell ol' grampa in Roumen gives quests with the words *** and butt in them. Let's have an example sentence then what it would look like.

"But that it's a hungery wolf doesn't mean it's a weak wolf."

*In game this would look as follows.

"****ha****'s a hungery wolf doesn't mean it's a weak wolf.

"I need assisstance please"

"I need ****istance please"

"An usual item"

*"****ual item"

What this does isn't so much filter out bad language, as create a cute puzzle game for kids to play. The game is called "Let's find the dirty word" and my little cousin, who I let play for a short while, was quite into it when a mention of Micky Mouse got censored. He had never heard the word Mick used as a derogatory term before, nor have I. In fact, there are people named Micky around my parts.

Let's try another one, this time more obscure and a word that people wouldn't even think about, yet my little cousin managed to guess thinks to the profanity filter.

"Under these circumstances we should head back, I'm bleeding and you're level is too low."

"Under these cir****stances we should head back, I'm bleeding and your level is too low"

Can you guess the naughty word? My 7 and a half year old cousin did. If not for the profanity filter there would be nothing wrong with that sentence, but thanks to it profane words come to everyone's mind. And not just because of frustration.

There's more wrong with the profanity filter. For example, suppose someone types the following.

"assassassass" This translates to "************" but with the swear on the end, which apparently the forums censor too.*

The profanity filter can't even stop people from swearing, if they're determined to. This method works with any swear word. For the sake of all though, I STRONGLY suggest removing the words Tit (mamary area)*Ass (donkey or rude person or posterior)*and Butt (posterior)*from the fulter, and entering exemptions for that one I won't mention (starts with a c and ends with m). Words that naturally contain that configuration of letters shouldn't be filtered.

Why should*TIT (mamary area)*be removed? Because a LOT of words in the english language end with a T or start with IT, and*IT is a word that is often used after words that end with a T.

Why should BUTT (posterior)*be removed? Not only is BUTT not considered profanity in any part of the english speaking word, but any thime the word "BUT" preceeds a word that starts with T, it spells Butt. Hell there are even words that have BUTT in them, like BUTTER.

Why should *** (donkey, mule, rude person, or posterior)*be removed? Because apart from only*referring to a donkey or a mule, a rude person, or the posterior, it is also common in many words, and used in the game itself. ASSIST contains the word ***. AS SHE spells the word ***. AS commonly preceeds many words that start with S, and is also common in other words, such as ASSASSINATE which actually has two times the ***.

Exemptions also*need to be added for other words, and the filter needs to be updated as new combinations of words needed for exemption are discovered. To this end two english speaking individuals should be made to play the game cooperatively*as any beta tester does, refined to text dialogue, and set out to discover word combinations through their text communications with one another during their game*play. Other methods may be even more effective, such as having the entire staff communicate using the profanity filter.

thye should drop the language filter so reporting people is easier, then put a*disclaimer saying there isnt a filter but to report people who do say stuff*

I agree,I do think the language filter needs reworking. It's annoying when you're trying to say something, but due to vague connotations to bad words you're blocked with *'s.

*Maybe they should even make such a filter OPTIONAL...

ya we cant even sa "what*class are u" or "push the inventory button" without "wat cl*** are u" or "push the inventory ****on"*

Remove the wildcards. It's not like you can't say them with symbols anyway. Just make it filter direct mentions of "TIT", "***" etc.

That way we can get on with typing normally and having people able to read our messages.

I think but+t and as+s need to be removed from the filter entirely. but+t isn't even considered profanity in any modern english speaking country. And name me one person under the age of 8 who hasn't heard the word assassassassass liberally repeated like that. HellHell (also not considered profanity in modern english speaking countries)*the words assassassassass and buttbuttbuttbuttbutt appear in two of the first quests you get, Kick Speedy Slimes Butt and Kick Speedy Honeybee *** COME ON! Don't filter us for what NPCs already say. And as you can see, both on the forums and in the game the filters can be easily negated simply by repeating a word. I've seen F Bombs like a hundred times now BECAUSE of the filter.

It's like this filter was created for some 1920's Devoutly Protestant couple with like*40 kids running around. Get with the times, people, or have someone who speaks english as a native language and under the age of 80 to write a filter. It's almost as if that insane religious group behind*Focus on the Family*created this filter.*

Sorry for going all out on this, but really, butt and *** as profanity? That's just silly, you're not getting an E rating so why bother making it for a bunch of toddlers?

The filter needs to be optional, with a turnoff button in the Game Options menu.

*****hat

Oh and mrtigerman,

"An usual item"

"****ual item"

It's "A usual". Minor exception in the English language. But yeah the an-us does come so now and then.

It would be really good for the game for someone with some common sense to go over the censoring. Since there are even words in there that don't even seem like cursing words.

Also, why the he.ll are things like J.ew and Chr.ist censored? Sure for a part of the American community it can be "harmful". But that's mostly bull. Knowing something about a different religion is actually a really good thing, since they're your neighbours. May you pick up the knownledge about them through a game, so be it. I find it more discriminating by censoring them then by saying things like "Christians suck" or "Jews suck". Even though most that say it don't even know what they are saying.

(offtopic: Christians saying bad things about Jews is hilarious. Ch.rist was a Je.w, though some Christian don't know that, sadly. Or don't want to admit it of course.

Whats worse if the word is "get it" it gives way more censor stars then the word itself or too less. its like get it is ge***** might as well be ******************.

I agree with the over filtering and the optional filtering. However I know for a fact that filtering is done client-side BEFORE it is sent to the server, hence why you can't whisper some people with filtered words in their name. This also means that an optional filter at this point without any changes would let you curse all you want (or just use normal works like class), for all to see, with anyone who has filtering on would still be filtered to you.

At one point in time, fellow was a derogatory term. Don't you love the evolution, and passing or slang?

Just*give us*the option to toggle the filter on/off. It seems to work fine that way in almost every other MMO. /shrug

words like **************************** is actually not profanity, vulgar or anything like that if you read the concise english dictionary. as everyone should know it means someone born out of wedlock but should you add a second A after the b then it does become vulgar as these are the two spellings and mean two different things the second is pronounced barstard but spelt baa and so forth. the same could be said for fck to actually put a u there is not in reality vulgar. put an o there then it is. you end up with fu or fo and the rest. by now you should understand the use of english words needs to be checked and the use of the collings concise oxford english dictionary (which is quite big) should be consulted if there are any queries. the word slagslagslagslag. slagslagslagslag means left over material when trying to make thng like iron. only recently has it meant something when referrng to someone.

just one more word to add to list that was previously mentioned by mrtigerman to do with mamory area is the word ti+t. when used n sentences such as "you complete ti+t" it means in a harmless and joking sense you idiot or fool. it also belongs to blue ti+t, and so forth which are common birds as is a sha+g which is a sea bird and type of dance. the sentences make the differences but ti+t is not vulgar in the least and as far as i am aware has never been.

the words should also be considered as to use n sentences so a filter button would make life easier or an age thing that must be registered and then the appropriate filter automatically used. so if the age was below say 18 then the filter automatically applied where as 18 + there was a choice to have the filter via a button
