Is there a way to make defense on WSP items higher? I think WSP items look tonnes better, but the lack of defense is probably going to be lethal, a lot.

No :( But you can still reinforce it for +HP/MP Max/Recov.

Well, you could get elemental defense, I believe. If you're lucky, you could get +stats too.. :3

Defense is possible but rare. i got +5 def on one of my mage gear ^^ good luck.
