View Full Version : Virus from update ??

I couldn't be more peeved off right now. I've not been to any site to download, update, brouse, nodda for over a month now. I came here earlier this evening thinking, "gee, maybe I'll play Fiesta for a bit, its been a while and I'd like to see if any good changes have taken place." NOT!!!!
I updated through the loader, was playing for approximately an hour (didn't even get a chance to re-do my scrolls) and POOF! Servers went down, website didn't want to load properly, forums wouldn't load (but of course the Fiesta Store came up no problem) and when I did finally get in, it was obvious there was a BIG problem, but once again.
THEN........my puter went all haywire with this bug. I've seen it before, but its gonna take someone more techie than myself to fix the daumned thing and probably more money than I have right now. I totally blame this on OS. Should I send y'all the bill?
I just can't believe this. It seems everytime y'all have updates (and I only missed two) something seems to go awry. But this is collateral damage here people. It was more than clear what had happened with the delay in your webpage load and the sudden overall crash of your servers. Now, if someone has the fix, I'd sure like to know what it is, where in my files I need to go to change extensions, etc. It is the least your company can do for those of us affected by such a thing.
THANKS A WHOLE BUNCH OUTSPARK. NOT
Ya know with all these adds, and the overwhelming spam both here and ingame, its really no wonder.

Heh... well.. I'd give y'all two guesses, but I was more than possitive your techies were a bit more puter savy than myself. Its obvious to me where I got it since I've been no where else. I've not even logged into my email acct for weeks to check that. Been too sick to do much, so I've just been kickin it on my couch since before the holidays.
Two plus two is four in any equation. As you can see, I've not even kept up on my siggy, which by the way, was rather nice.

As was mine, link. Not this one, however. Its strickly off the agenda for any gaming.

NOT... I even have a firewall that most programs require you to disengage for uploading purposes. Sheesh.. I'm no idiot my dear. Lemme see.. how long have I been using a pc? Hmmm... must be close to neigh on 20 yrs now, with a + behind that. I'm just not a techie. Done a bit in the past with different OS's but haven't need anything like this done in about 8 yrs. THAT's how careful I am.

There was/is a problem with the ads on the OS forums causing maleware viruses the last few weeks so likely OP caught something then on the way to the download page?

How odd, I'm thinking it might be from the trojan/malware forum issue as well. My computer hasn't been doing that...

Not sure.. maybe it was an add running simultaniously with the server. Wouldn't take much to bypass the website if they are all on the same network, and infect the uploadable files for updates. Since I don't know the set-up y'all have for servers v/s your website, I can't guess at how. Maybe someone was surfing on the job and inadvertantly d/l'd something not so nice. I'm being redirected to nasty websites, ya know the kind.... XXX rated, and prompted to download some new virus detect program. Now, as I will reiterate, this is not a new thing to me, I've seen it before, just not on my puter; BECAUSE.. I'm very selective about where and when I go anywhere.
And, as I said above, that action has been rather inhibited due to my poor health this past month and prior to the holidays.

i have fiesta on 2 of my pc's and i have no probs. at all with it, i doubt that it's a problem with fiesta itself,
it could be that you picked up a bug from one of the pages you went to as ppl do put links to viruses etc. on pages everywhere and the forum is no exception. get an anti-virus program on ur pc and maybe spybot as well as these will help prevent problems from coming up. i use avg free anti-virus myself and it detected a threat on a post i was reading earlier and blocked it. thats all i gotta say atm.

It is, exactly. The issue now is where did this come from since I've only been to the loader page of Fiesta, as of early this morning, to update and play.
EDIT: oh ya.. and here.

Take a gander farther up, but just to make it simple for you, I'll repeat myself: I do have virus protect and firewalls. Both were inplace when I uploaded the update. However, since this is one site I do have as an exception to the block (to eliminate the long page load and prompts) it wouldn't alert me right off if there was a problem. It is afterall, just a computer.
EDIT: Oh and I don't go clicking on links, sigs, nothing of the sorts. However, some of these adds take up the whole page and require one to click the little, itty, bitty "x" to close them out. I don't believe I hit one, but anything is possible. The point being that an add which carries any payload should have been detected and immediately removed, ergo why they're called "malware".

The problem is, players don't typically come to the forums prior to updating and/or unless they've already run into problems, ie: just as I'm doing now. If y'all have the method for and know of the file to fix please feel free to post the fix. I'm sure my case is not a rare thing. I can even give the you the default page it continues to .exe when IE is loading. As of this point, nothing is functional on my pc. It has attached itself to every .exe program and launches its load. :(
GAWD.. I feel like the conversation is relative to one of my X-husbands; most of which were nothing more than malware either. Course, I picked em, that's a fact I can't walk away from.

I realize it can't be removed with just the click of a button. Most times, and this is probably one of them, you need to get deep into your files, even registry files, to change the name and/or extension of those files which in turn changes the action and alienates the .exe properties of the malware.

Is this the best you can come up with? You really have nothing to contribute to this post other than you're typical lack of knowledge.
Just FYI, any and all browsers have vunerabilities that can be overcome by any hacker, even firefox. It just depends on who they see as a challenge for the day, or which company has caused them the most grief. Hackers are criminals, this is why.
that virus is called downloader.exe and it passes by nortan usaualy... it sits in program files forawhile and springs a random attack b4 nortan sees it dosnt nessasarly mean from this site maybe soemthing else?
I see where this was addressed in early December. My next question is, why is it still here? And, I don't use Norton, but something a bit better. Norton and McAffee both are bypassed much too easily, not to mention they themselves have malware contained in their constant barage of adds for different products and services. You'd have to break my other arm to put either of those on my pc again. Now, if someone with a bit of tech know-how could just tell me how to disengage it. As it stands, I can't open any program, less I'm in 'Safe' mode.

I wan't going to elaborate as much on your last post, freak, but I'm finding it hard to hold my tongue. You absolutely don't have a clue do you? Firefox is no more or less safe than IE. As a matter of fact they went completely down a couple month's ago (according to a news article I saw a couple months ago) due to being hacked. So, go play the game less you have the fix.

Surely it must be so. We're already doing what we can to stop this, but we have to coordinate with the ad providers.
If I am correct in assuming, the providers do just that, provide you with a link to their website, via boxed lettering, and/or mpeg files. Good business sense is to pull the ads until they are proven safe for the link. If these internet advertisers wish to publish their goods, then they should be required to
1.) Keep their links small and non-intrusive to the users of the site they plan to invade, and
2.) given the financial crisis many businesses are experiencing these days, I don't think it would be a too difficult a process to enforce, if they wish to sell their goods.
I used to have my own website, I know what it's like to constantly do maintenance just to eliminate the spamming, viruses, worms, trojans, etc. contained within many of the mega-graphic advertisments. However, if a company is not interested in keeping its site safe and for the purpose it was intended (I would hope OS is not allowing links to XXX sites, given that they themselves have an age limit) then they don't need to be doing business as.... something else, which is misrepresentation.
OS is much larger, and I would hope more capable than my little-self, to keep these things in check.

Fix: buying new fans fixed it for us ... my roomy Flea was able to see the changes in her motherboard utilities before her pc shut down on her yet again fixed it by getting new fans...
other issues could be drivers ... Roomy had an issue with her sound card that caused her ALOT of problems Fix: she bought a new mobo (mother board) and it's been working fine ever since.
Those are the only two reasons for suddenly being shut down that we personally have ran into but i'm sure others have had the same issue in the past(present/whenever xD)! Good luck getting this under controll :)

I just paid $150 + dollars to have my pc cleaned from one of the last two updates and/or something here at the OS/Fiesta forums page.
It has taken most of the day. We have removed all software from our pc's relative to OS due to this major issue which has obviously, as of yet, not been addressed and/or OS is relying on its patrons to handle the situation individually with no regard for the user.
The virus is a trojan package/hijacking device used to obscond passwords to gaming, or any other sites you may attempt to access using a password while its activated. While the victim is busy either in confusion, waiting for mom or dad to get the pc in the shop, or the repair man to show up and go through the process of cleaning your files, (if that can be done v/s wiping your HD clean) the account can be, and under prime conditions, hijacked.
I use the term 'Prime' relative to just how much it would be worth for the hijacker to take over your account long enough to get ahold of other information, your real money, ingame money, items, etc. and resell these things to someone else.
This is why OS warns about using any of the spammed material ingame. More often than not, you are purchasing something someone else stole from another player and sold again, and again for profit until they get to you. Then you become an acomplice to a cyber crime.
My ignorance to the elaborate techniques used and how many times an account can change hands, and even countries just astounded me. I had a long talk with the techie who repaired my pc. He is an avid gamer of many, more sophisticated, games. He has been for many years and went into great detail about the highway used by these crooks and the reasons why. There is a lot of money being made out there through hijacked accounts and the resale of ingame cyber paraphanalia and any other personal information you may have stored on your pc.
Other than what I have mentioned, this site is obviously compromised. Even as the forums page loaded this time I was prompted that another attack was being attempted and the file was disengaged. I was lucky the gentleman put a different, better, virus scan and protect program on my pc out of his good heart. He, and I agreed on this aspect, do not trust either Norton or McCaffee. They are too easily compromised. His action was not part of their normal procedure, but he took pity on my ignorance both by providing the new software, and our enlightening conversation.
OS.. as it is, you have too many victims out here right now. You realy need to do something before you lose anymore players who were once loyal. ;)
EDIT: When you get your pc cleaned, your virus protect updated/changed, then change all your passwords immediately.

dead good advice. im using IE, with its standard firewall, and AVG 9.0 and i have yet to get any virus from outspark.
so to me, what the others said was right, not like im flaming. either what i use is damn good, or you got something really, really suckish man.
btw; to the flamer of IE... it may have vulnerabilities, just like all the others, but it is ALOT faster then safari, firefox, and any others ive tried. and yes. ive tested it. IE is well suited for gaming, which is why its so popular, cause 95% of the people on the net are gamers, whereas firefox and safari tend to go more for security and business, thus slowing the speed of them. severely.

Best advice I can give for anyone who thinks they have a virus or trojan (no matter if it came from OS forums or your grandmother's home page) is to disconnect from the internet asap. Pull the CAT5 , turn the modem off, remove the phone line, whatever. You can work on the PC while its off line. No matter what might be on your PC, no personal data can transmit w/o a connection.
