Like the title said, what would you do if you wake up one morning and you find out the internet all over the world has seized to exist?
Since pretty much everything I do (work, school, hobbies) is connected to the internet I would have a big problem lol.

Well, I would find out something else to do and I would have to learn how to live with the situation. A big part of the world somehow needs Internet. I wonder what would happen in New York...

Pretty much every job in the world relies on the internet, though some more than others.
No e-mail, no website. It would be harder for a lot of jobs to stay alive without them having a website or email. Sending letters takes too long and can mess up deadlines. A lot of jobs get publicity through their website. Without google you wouldnt really know what is "out there". Or you'd have to read a milion books.

OMG, it'd be like being bombed all the way back to *gasp* 1987... LOL
They'd actually have to print physical newspapers...again
No music downloading...you want to swipe music, you'd have to go back to shoplifting it from the record store...again
No more Netflix or streaming video...out to the video store with you...again
So basically...you'd have a bunch of 40+ year old people going on about their business the way we did for decades, while having a new and constant source of amusement: watching most of the 30- year old group twitch and thrash helplessly in withdrawal.

yeha but that was back when companies and pretty much everything werent relying on it. technology moves on. losing internet is like going a step backwards in time. I think all you see is regular users like you and me losing internet, but you have to see the bigger picture.
The government relies on internet, companies too. The amount of companies that work mainly through the internet would go poof, a LOT of people will lose their jobs (more than the amount tha have lost their jobs already). There would be riots. Technology would also come to a stop for a while. And you can keep going on like that. Its not "oh they were able to do it fine back in the day without it, so we could too"
Its like saying, well back in the stone age we survived too, so we can do that now too. Thats not true at all. Most of the people that get lost in a Jungle never come back out alive. On a bigger scale, if all the buildings would go boom and we had to live in an environment like Haiti has now, we wouldnt survive. The human race advances and invents new technology to make life easier.

It wouldn't affect me that much really. I do a lot of online gaming, but I'm perfectly fine being a console gaming. Console gaming persisted(and in some minds, was more successful) before the internet ever came about, so it wouldn't directly affect me, as I have quite the gaming collection. Beyond that I'd go back to martial weapons practice(more than I am now), reading, and practicing/studying more in the tactical arts.
My job doesn't require the internet although it is used to some degree, so my lifestyle would overall be unaffected. I'm one of those "hard to upset" type of people.

Mine dissapeared about a day ago... some idiot at our Internet provider company canceled our subscription without a reason or warning -_- as you see we managed to solve it... though it almost cost my next terms courses (we had to take them on this morning and if my mom wouldn't have known how to do it at her workplace, I might couldn't get on to several courses...)
I would be pretty crazy without the internet... so don't even ask such a thing XD

Actually, humans arent THAT smart yet. we're still a "Type 0" civilization.
I wont explain what the type 0 civilization is, it would take too long, but ill talk a little bit about what would happen if all the water disappeared...
Since pretty much every lifeform on the earth is requires some sort of water to stay alive, animals and plants would die, and if the humans didnt die because of the lack of water, we would die from hunger anyways. Our bodies keep getting rid of water (sweat, urine, saliba) without getting new water to replace it, so we would "dry up" >_>
And PLEASE anyone, dont let me facepalm myself because someone said "well we still have coca cola" -.- There is water in cola too...

Well, if the internet disappeared, the economy would most likely crash. Seeing that so many businesses rely on it, as well as the stock market. I'd be like that Y2K freak out in 00'. (except it would actually happen)
But
I"d just stock up on canned goods and a few stacks of books and I'd be fine till everything evened out. But, after that idk, i guess I'd just become an artist . . .more so than now.

Since pretty much everything I do (work, school, hobbies) is connected to the internet I would have a big problem lol.
Read a book, sketch, go hiking, camp, kayak, SCUBA dive, snorkel, travel, go caving, go skydiving (haven't tried this one yet, but I will soon!).
Basically, I'd experience the world through my own eyes instead of through a computer screen.

While yes, the human race is typically one of convenience and luxury, not everyone has those luxuries. Not everyone has access to the internet, good health care, or even electricity. I imagine those people probably wouldn't notice too much of a difference.
For the rest of us, I'm sure there would be panic, riots, disease and death. But to say that no one who lives in a technologically advanced society could survive is rather unrealistic. Many of us are capable of surviving without the computer...and we say we'd be bored...but truth be told, we'd be so busy working to rebuild, to grow food, to learn to adapt to life without convenience that we probably wouldn't get the chance to get bored. Who worries about money when no one has any? Barter system ftw. The human race would take a severe population cut (which hey, might increase resources for those that are left) and a giant step back in time.
Its not impossible, all creatures adapt over time...even humans. The technology itself is a form of adaptation. Someone saw a need, and created a solution. I would assume, even after being knocked back to the middle ages, that the human race would (at some point) begin to advance again.

First of all the post you quoted isnt really about "fun" and "being bored", but more about our economy. Its a domino effects. Its not like people will say "oh well internet is gone? we'll have to rebuilt something else". Its gonna be a lot more complicated than that.
An important way of communication has been taken away from us, just like if (normal)mail, telephone and TV would be taken away from us. In that case, news would have to travel by car, people telling each other what happened, it would go a LOT slower than just turning on your TV and listen to what people have to say about what happened in the world.
Ofcourse internet is just a part of that so it wont be THAT worse. if internet disappeared we would still have TV and telephones to communicate, but if you're really interested in this kind of thing you could take a sheet, write one thing that would be messed up when internet disappeared, and then continue on what other things it would affect, and so on and so on. I would do it if I wasnt so busy with homework lol XD (yes im kind of a science geek x3, I like to investigate things and find out how they work)
Again, its not just about fun. I mean, if internet would disappear, ok I wouldnt be able to play mmo's. big deal, there are other things I can do. But what I'm saying is that there's a lot more than that xP

And what I'm saying, and from the look of it what Celtic is saying, is that yes, there would be some major upheavals- but nothing so drastic as the "OMG it's the end of civilization" tone so many earlier posts have taken.

No, but it has been mentioned in previous posts, so I addressed it. I did also address the fact that if the economy collapsed the human race would probably fall back on a bartering system.
An important way of communication has been taken away from us, just like if (normal)mail, telephone and TV would be taken away from us. In that case, news would have to travel by car, people telling each other what happened, it would go a LOT slower than just turning on your TV and listen to what people have to say about what happened in the world.
Given how much false information is spread over the internet, I'm not entirely sure that this would be a bad thing. Its mostly just a matter of convenience...the internet is the quickest and cheapest way to reach a large number of individuals.
Sure, I'm not saying that the world as we know it wouldn't end. Things would be drastically different, life as we know it would cease to exist...but that doesn't mean life itself would end. Many people, albeit not used to using them, have the skills to survive in a world without the internet.
Again, its not just about fun. I mean, if internet would disappear, ok I wouldnt be able to play mmo's. big deal, there are other things I can do. But what I'm saying is that there's a lot more than that xP
I understand that. The main point of my last post was to state I disagree with your theory that we wouldn't survive.
I think the human race would certainly thin out. Disease, starvation, exhaustion, lower birth survival rates, crime, etc. but we're not completely incapable of surviving without the conveniences we're used to today.
Maslow's hierarchy of needs presents a good visual for this, but humans are programmed to satisfy certain needs first. The first (primary) need that a human satisfies are its physiological needs...what it needs to survive. This means food, water, sleep, etc.
The need for money, companionship, communication...all comes after basic survival. I don't think the loss of the internet, or the collapse of the economy would trigger the end of the world. It would certainly set us back a few hundred years...life expectancies would drop because health care would suck...but end of all humanity. Notsomuch.
At least, this is my opinion.

I never said the human race would go instinct if internet dissappeared lol. My point was that throughout the hundreds of years, man has made discoveries based on discoveries made before that, and made technology based on technology that was invented before that. Internet is a branch in this process, and if internet would poof a "gap" would appear and not only individuals will be affected, but also our economy. If something like this suddenly dissappears, trouble will arise, and I dont mean the end of the world.
Losing internet will also have good side, less illegal distribution of software (including music). On the other hand, advertising for such will be harder. How many bands/groups/musicians do you know, you probably wouldnt know today if it wasnt for internet? For me, a lot (and the people around me dont know them, since they are japanese bands)
So... if internet goes poof, a lot of bad things would happen, and ofcourse, eventually we'll find a solution, but I think a lot of people take internet for granted. "oh well, I wont be able to e-mail and play online games, big deal". I think its bigger than that.
I promised myself to make this post short, but I see I kinda failed lol -.- but I want to give one more example, Outspark.
Outspark is a company that solely relies on the internet. If internet goes poof, they might as well go find an other job. And Outspark is only a small company (about 50 employees I think) that publishes MMO games. There are thousands of companies with more employees that publish MMO's (and im only talking about these MMO companies, there are other companies that solely rely on internet too but work in an other industry). These will all be affected, pretty much die instantly and all these employees will have trouble finding new jobs. It'll be pretty much similar to the current economic crisis, but probably a lot worse, internet TV, webdesigners, simple programmers (that offer those milions of programs on the internet), internet advertisement companies, google, webhosting companies, and so on....
Damn my post has become too big lol...
I also have the feeling I keep repeating the same things over and over again -.-

This is true, but at the same time, companies would have to increase their real world advertising to make up for the influence lost with the internet...so its possible new jobs would be created or at least expanded upon.
:)
I'm an optimist...especially when my work day has just ended. ;D

I agree with Celtic on most of that (post 32), but i think it would be some severely hard times for awhile. How many ppl do you know that have their own garden and livestock? not many I'm assuming. If the market crashed due to lack of internet, most businesses would falter. Therefore, very little or no stock in most local grocery stores. And anyway, if the market crashed, money would be worthless. What can you trade for 20lbs of meat that you yourself dont direly need? It'd be an "end of the world" situation for a year or 2 then It'd even out. . . .if u survived it.After the initial crash it'd be like living in the 1800s but everything would rebuild in time.

Also, only 3% of the world's money is actually touchable, the other 97% is virtual. Internet commerce wouldnt exist, and more "virtual money" would have to be spent to make real money. But im not going deeper into this lol, I dont want to make my posts that long anymore XD
- edit
and yeah Celtic did make some good points, but like cheshiregriffin and myself said it will take a while before we would get over it. Look how long the current worldwide crisis is going along (also look at the domino effect, some countries and industries were only recently affected by this which began like 2 or 3 years ago), and what caused it? ;)
