I was reading one of the guides and it said to level quicker avoid party request... I don't understand does forming a party help you level quicker or does it hurt you? Does it only work if your partying with a character much higher than you?

Partying nowadays makes no sense because exp is drastically reduced if you do: the more party members, the less exp each player gets. Yes, you do kill faster, but you can't deny you are able to mob the map by yourself.
Plus, the dynamic usually becomes ruined, because the internet connections make monsters appear at different spots in different screens, and killing monsters one by one in a duo ends up in carnage.
Moreover, in big parties, people tend to go afk and leech. This means you are killing and earning exp for the others while they are watching tv or whatever.
Ahh... in the old days, a full party meant double exp... but nowadays, the opposite happens.

How does partying work anyways...Let's say you 1100xp for a kill solo. Then you party with one person, and the kill is now only worth 900. Does that mean you get 900+ their 900 for 1800 or just 900? I just don't get the concept behind partying.

If you're partied with another person that is the exact same level and class, and both of you are actually killing stuff, you will earn exp at a faster rate.
Alone, you will get 100% of the exp you normally get from one kill.
Duoing, you will get about 60% of the exp you normally get from one kill, but there are 2 people killing monsters, so the monsters will die twice as often, so you are gaining 20% more exp than you normally do.
Paladin skills affect the whole party, so they might as well party. Activating their buff costs the same amount of mp regardless of how big the party is.
If you're a mage there's no point in partying unless it's with another mage or a high level sniper. All the other classes don't kill as quickly as mages.
