hi,
i have broken rules and double posted this into general discusiion as well - as some other things need to be said here in particular as well as the huge thank you's
a big hug and a thank you to the mystery cleric who zapped me a +200hp/sp buff in roumen wood on my way to sand beach last night.
let me explain. i am a pitiful solo archer who was on level 13...
(i will not party unless i am just mentoring a newbie and need to keep an eye on them. love those green dots when a newbie lvl 2 mage goes running off to fight mushroom fighter and i cant keep the heals going fast enough and need to head slam the critter myself as it is a long walk back to roumen to wipe the tears and pick up the pieces of confidence on the floor... yeah i play a cleric too and have one on all 3 servers)
... and being a solo archer is even more scary than a solo mage after lvl 5.
players who just have one high lvl character will not remember but even the walk back to town on turning level 13 is bad when you know that Robin is waiting to ask you to kick a ratman fighters *** (for smacking his grandson around and the damn kid didn't deserve it??? i should be buying ratty a beer!!) and Ruby is about to whine off about sharp boar and bored boars and why does she go sort them out her high and mighty self please??
so i'm trudging down the road and wondering if i should break a habit and try and party up...
ZAP! wooo! hey what happened?? my strength bar! what hit me? oh... OOOOOOOOoooooooo!
HIT POINTS... I'VE GOT HIT POINTS!!!
vitality, aim, shield buffs, chocolate and i'm DRUNK WITH POWER. gimme the quests now, i'm doing boar pate sarnies, 3 rounds!
but omg disaster! now just when i'm digging the last few hp pots out of storage, my current newbie logs in. nerrow whoever you are, you are hard work to mentor with your frequent disconnects at the best of times. sweet, it was not the best time to ask me questions about raising stats. with the timer ticking away i eventually logged out, dug my long suffering cleric out and re-introduced myself. evening wandering after a little mage, trying to whack mushroom fighters (see above already...). happy newbie and now going up in lvl safely under another player's wing, out of my hair.
so today i am back in and dismay i have only 24 minutes left on the buff! okay, calculated risk time. the walk to forest of mist through sand beach will take to long. then what if the quest mob doesn't spawn?
scroll to elderine - it is the back path and i know that at this lvl a grave robber or smart phino or even a kibling is going to be instant death but it is busy and a high level has just cleared the western path down to centre island . i make it on the run and the phino who spots me only gets one ding on me before i make it across the bridge to safety. now i know two spawn points for sharp boar gang. pray they haven't both been cleared, five minutes to spawn - i can't wait that long. i hurry through the ratmen and boars scanning for the end of the point. there they are - ugly as sin and in their usual knot. pick sharp boar and fingers on the key sequence and tab button. okay power shot and we are in for it. can't kite - remember - give the impression you can't cope and some well meaning mage will pick off the one shot you need for the three. stand - fight - feel the pain.
all three down and i'm dizzy. the 8's are flashing upwards and i'm bleeding like a heavy month and the pads have given out. i need to house but i'm dimly aware through the red mist is a gaunt striding figure of ratman fighter and it is next on the do list. sense says wait and heal but i'm aware of a timer and the sand is running out! a green ratman fighter! oh wait, that's already taken... it's swiping at someone...
O.o do i ks? it's so wrong but soooo tempting and i NEED to kill it! i'm running over but i don't touch the arrows yet - i must restrain myself. the victim is another archer, can they cope? are they questing it or did they just get caught? i was grateful for a rescue once there, should i...
OMG! he's down! i've got a free line at a quest objective on half hp! i'm hitting keys and pots and stones and this is bit is a blur. but ratman fighter lands back in the dust - worthless ego bruised grandson avenged but i'm now standing over the poor fallen corpse of dragonhalf asking hopefully for a res. mortified at the unfortunate man lying at my feet - i add my shout for a res and please look out for the 8's still streaming up to find us as i'm still bleeding all over the poor dead body of dragonhalf - insult to (!injury) fatality or what?
super cleric - name slipped but began with t - is over in time and dragonhalf is back to life and spared the long walk. i've added my "thx" to this cleric's assistance (big hug too love you to bits!) as i am on a guilt trip over having got the kill literally over someone else's dead body. the timer is ticking and i've spent time corpse sitting already and any minute now ratty is going to spawn all over again.
and i've still got 12 boars and 20 ratmen on the quest list! bleeding stopped, scramble pots and into the boars! i finish a dozen boars (plus 2 which a passing fighter helped themselves too - after i'd powered and greenied the mob if u so please... not all high lvl types are your friend) and i just drop the last as the main buff disappears and i start the debuff dwindle into normality.
so if you were the high cleric wandering though roumen wood, wading through the crazy bundle of newbies and bouncing slime towards the sand beach gate and chanced to dispense a hp / sp buff on some random figure - i love you dearly. you have created a mini-epic and a memorable day for me. thank you.

and let this be a lesson to all you clerics. the work that you do maybe unrewarded (GM's reading - can we clerics have a 1 xp reward for each res? just as a token acknowledgement?). you may sometimes feel unappreciated. you may sometimes be abused. so it is in life anyway and a lot worse, quit grumbling, i've had RL abuse you wouldn't want.
but you can also make somebody able to achieve the impossible, realise their dreams and above all survive to grow and enjoy the game more and maybe bring a glow of personal achievement into their life.
and that is beyond measure. remember this next time, a few moments and your power may briefly become very real indeed...
