Question on gathering stuff?

When you start picking a herb, mushroom, tree, chest, etc., what exactly does the bar that appears do?

So far, people have told me different things about it opening faster such as you have to click on the bar with your mouse or press the auto attack button when it passes by. Not sure which is true though...

Any ideas?

If you click on the gold bar when the red line is directly on it, you will gather it faster. You have to hit it directly though.

With your mouse, there is no short cut or other way to do it sadly.
