Yes, the aoe'ers were dumb. After NUMEROUS times of the GM and other players y'egging, w'egging, and standing RIGHT NEXT to the offender, telling them there is no AOE'ing allowed in this event, they continued. There's a good reason for no aoe'ing: It makes it fair to the lower level players who can't aoe and therefore would have to take a lot longer to find it. Meanwhile, aoe'ers have killed everything in sight in a manner of seconds, easily and quickly finding the poyo/moonbear pet. Moreover, it makes the event CHALLENGING.
If players don't enjoy the event or lag because of the huge mob, there's a simple solution: Don't Participate. Really, it's that easy.
Personally, I think there were too many warnings given before players started being jailed. I saw some players repeatedly aoe'ing before they finally "disappeared" from the event. The rules are Y'egged by the GM before the event, and he clearly stated a couple of times to not AoE, and if you did you would be placed in jail and need to send a ticket to CS explaining why you were put there. Late to event? It's at your own risk if you don't become informed of the rules. And really, how many times have we had a version of this event? At the point where you have earned your AoE, you should be familiar with the event. Unless you're a noob and leeched/were plvled there. Then again, you probably need to see more of Xen, and the jail's as good a place to start as any, in my opinion.
By the way - AoE means AREA of EFFECT. Frost, bramble, reflection, and sandstorm affect the monsters in the area; therefore, players MAY NOT use these skills. If you're too noob to realize this, again you get what you deserve.

Jail... :)
I remember a year back or so the extra reward for completing an event (within the rules) was everyone was thrown into the jail for 5-10 mins.. This was after we got the stated event reward (xens? think is was a Sewer cleanup). The jailing was a bonus. :)
