Welcoming Party
It was my first day. An increase of population required and influx of units in the field. I slid from my mold, slick and new against the receiving station. I was prepped, ready to go and meet my destiny, my new life. Taking hold of all my courage, all my excitement, I glided to the shiny teleport system, and light engulfed my very being.
A forest opened before me, and from the light I moved onto the fresh, damp dirt of the world. It was thrilling. The smell of wood and plant and life filled my head and stirred my spirit. It was better than I could have imagined. The sounds of town resonated through the trees, speaking of people to come. Let them. I was ready.
The first sound of footsteps pounded through the forest, and I could feel the vibration, hear the animals stirring away. But I was ready. I stirred myself up and turned to greet the hurrying elf creature, and got ready for the moment of truth. “Welcome to Fiesta!” I said, the words I had practiced a minutes and a half prior sending pride through my squishy body.
Then the pain hit, and all of that pride and joy slid from my body like the ooze that now curled around the wound and down my face. My eyes traveled tremulously to the arrow protruding from my gelatinous body. This hadn’t been in the words of his creators. This hadn’t been in the briefing.
Darkness surrounded me, gripped me. The pain floated away. The sounds, the smells, all sensation evaporated. Death took me under its wings. There was no more.
