Why do monsters sometimes do only 1 damage?

Like the title says folks, i noticed that certain monsters that do 30-40 damage with each attack sometimes do 1-2 damage. why is that?

You try to dodge the attack since you are a neophyte and end up being grazed a little by the attack.

Yeah...I don't think so.

Monsters have attack speeds, this 1 damage happens right after they make a successful attack, not instead of.

It also happens to every class.
