Help!! plz!?

Can someone kindly tell me what I am doing wrong here? I am trying to enhance my weapons and sheild (not at the same time of course) but it won't let me drop the weapon/shield in the center square. I do have enhancement stones but it is not letting me enhance. Am I doing any thing wrong?

Unequip the item first. Move it to your inventory then to the middle square. It won't let you move it straight from your hand to the enhancing square.
