As in frontal/mellee attack, they can but they will do 1 or 2 damage and miss more than half the time. Acolytes specialize in spells. For beginner acolytes such as myself, it's easy not to die because your illusion rock spell will slow the movement speed of enemies and do good damage. Though the mana takes a toll, that's for sure.

Acolytes are healers and a support char. Don't chose this one if you want to do high damage.

Also, something like a "battle acolyte" doesn’t work, as our weapons have 0 physical damage and we get little attack from pow, so even by raising pow a lot you would do no real damage at all.
Still, answering to the question in more direct manner, yes, acolytes do have one (yup, just one till a rater high lvl) attack spell (Illusion Quake) and also another “debuff” spell (Sprit) that completely paralyzes an enemy, though only till it gets hit again (meaning it sucks on a mob you want to actually kill, but it helps for mobs control) and the rests are just things for the support.
Now, considering that both our heal and damage come from int, at the same time that you build a good support aco, you are also raising the power of the spell, meaning that it won’t really suck for attacking, though still it gives the lower damage output of all the classes.
