are we useless? I am lvl 18 and I do KQ often, the thing is I always feel useless. Fighters - Tank, Clerics - heal and even archers look more useful then me. I've done Mara KQ about 8 times and I am Always the last mage standing. Do we get more useful later? or are we always the class no one wants in a party?

im downloading the game right now, and plan on being a cleric

i was a whitemage is final fantasy 11 for 3 years so, its probably the only thing im good at

but from my experiance in other MMO's it takes a while before mages are really usefull, so im sure once you get crazy strong, you'll be someone everyone wants >:3

at lwr lvl we mage are pretty much useless....i hate dying and often party up with tank or a cleric. but as you reach wizmage lvl or lvl30+ we mage deal pretty hard core damages(INT) and crit(SPR) (both: hybrid)(depends on stat builds). To be able to use dispel skill is also great and you'll need those in CP...

mage are natural lurer and damage dealer so lvl up quick if u dont want to feel useless.

this is just based by my experience...but really,we are not completely useless.

At higher levels you guys are incredible with your damage. Hell even at lower levels you are. The only drawback is the lack of defense. You just have to learn how to play your character and when you're in a party hope you got a tank who can keep the aggro away from you.
And mages and archers are essential to the KQ Mini Dragon considering they are the only ones who can really do any damage while staying out of his AOE attack range.

The only setback of being at lower level mage is that you can't exactly spam your skills because you have a limited set of useful ones that do a lot of damage while considering sp and cd. However, mages do really powerful later in the game and are probably the most sought out during aoe grinding.

Wow for once I see someone wondering if mages are useless, usually nowadays it's people claiming archers as a dying breed due to their disabilities in higher levels.

Sure you might die a lot now, but if you persevere to your level 31 skill sets, you'll really notice people trying to party with you for your BOOM powah. =]

I have to say, no, mages aren't useless at low lvls. Consider having some DEF, VIT scrollz. The term 'useless' will only come to play if u miss alot and majorly depends on the mobs ur killing. Oh and showing signs of no fear in 1v1 mobs in KQ may give u chances of getting an invite(not necessary), or simply ask for one.

I always carry a ton of scrolls and that seems to help a lot. Like someone said, the only drawback is the low def. I allotted some of my stats for end., even tho some people will tell you not to. If you solo a lot like I do, it's good to have some end, IMHO.

I don't think we mages are useless at all, it's all in how you play. And enhancing your stuff (if you have a lot to invest) can really put the icing on the cake. :D

Also helps to *very nicely* ask a cleric for a buff now and then. =3

I knew most of my spells upgraded at 31, so I saved up 80 something silver for it (over the course of grinding nonstop for a few days). ALL of it cost about 60ish silver.. >.< But now I don't feel so squishy and baby-like anymore, what with my high hits!

For the level 20 class change quest, I bought scrolls and stalked people for a buff. But not in the "walk up to shiny fighter and say "buff plz" 50 times" kind of way. I explained that I needed it to fulfill my dreams of becoming a Wizmage. XD;

In KQ it seems useless, but if people need certain kills for quests, they'll invite a mage. Or just make a party in KQ the second you get in, and they accept for fear of not bieng able to party another.

And I agree with Hollocus. I use some skill points for END and I don't give a poop squat about what people say is wrong or right when stat building a mage. It's whatever a person wants, and that END has helped me a lot.

most of my points went to int, and some to spr. I have a nice Wind staff upgraded to +3 with reg elrues and then to +5 with blessed Lix. I make most of my scrolls I do have plenty def, and atk scrolls but since it's my first char I only have 5 silver and not high enough to make end scrolls. Thanks everyone for the words of encouragement I just wanted to know if keep lvling my mage would pay off. =)

Any classes but cleric doing Mara at 18 should feel useless. Fighter can't tank the mobs near the end, the heal and dps would force you to spam kick but that still means you're losing aggro once every few seconds, and a few crits on you if the clerics aren't fast enough you're dead. Archer, same as mages as well as dps fighters, miss miss miss miss miss miss hit for 10! miss miss miss miss

O_O useless? Never have I felt useless, and as far as the trouble leveling getting to 30 was a breeze. KQs Quests and putting effort into grinding you can get there no problem. I also soloed until I got to 30. Anything worth getting is worth working to get.

The bigest problem you probably have with Mara is dying a lot. You have to be careful to atack only things someone else is already atacking and if you gain agro stop casting your spells unless you can bring the atacking mob down within seconds (well with boses youre probably a one hit kill, but with the lower mobs this should help).

Another thing, most low lvl mages don't read the forums enough to know its best to use lvl1 magic missle and they end up standing around because of long cool down on spells. So switch to lvl1 MM, maybe lvl1 Fire Bolt as well and you'll feel as usefull as you really are ^^

I didn't have to read the forum to figure that out, I always have used lvl 1 Missile and lvl 1 Fire, as for lightning and Ice I use them at max lvl cause SP pots are not a problem for me and same cooldown.

There is no reason not to upgrade your spells. :O I have all my spells upgraded. I start off with MM7 FB7 IB7 LB7. Then I spam MM1 (MM1 doesn't increase it's cool time when you upgrade) and I have MM cool down empowered down to 1.5secs. I only have to cast MM1 3 times b4 my other spells cool. I recommend upgrading.

I did a bit experiment myself. The best way for me is to have all except magic missle at max level. While spamming MM you can occationally press other buttons when their cooldown finished. It won't pimp your dps but really lower your aggro and you'll be doing something, and the crits are pretty awesome at times. I managed to crit Mara for 120 with fire bolt at level 17, normally biggest hit that time would be around 70 with low level 1 spells.

here's how I did it,
get 15 of each stone
get an endurance, aim(power), Defense, Magic Defense scrolls
and try to take on all monsters 1 at a time
when you get to the golem kill the golems first as they have low hp.

Another abbreviation to remember: DPS = Damage Per Second

Which is what us mages and archers are. We are the damage dealers and we kill things fast, even at low levels. If you're still doing Mara kq, then you'll notice that you'll do visible damage to Marlone/Mara once you're 23+ or so. Maybe even earlier. I don't think you can say the same for most of the other classes.

Don't worry about mages being useless, we're far from it. Dungeon boss hunting parties like to have mages and archers with them because they won't have to take a very long time killing the bosses. :D We are useful, don't doubt that. ^^

xiia0pinkki, there's a way to cheat in the dungeon of shadows. Since you've done a few times, you notice that your Shadow needs to be 'cloned' from you? Twice, once at the beginning and second time at the final room. If you can, take your weapon off before the Shadow finished cloning you (in the case of the beginning, enter the dungeon without weapon), then quickly equip it back. Your Shadow will be without weapon now. Remember to do it again at the final room, because that's when it matters most. When I did it with my mage, I took off my other equipments as well. :D But just to be safe, in case you can't equip them back fast enough, just take off weapon will do. And heed LuzEterna's advice, except get as much stones and potions as you can. Potions can cover for when stones are cooling down.

But I find it much more fun when we are on an even field, I actually had only planned on playing Fiesta till i got to Wizmage but I must say passing that dungeon was really fun, so I'll keep playing. also yeah I forgot about potions but I didn't really need em.

Mages at higher lvls are VERY much in demand. They take aggro most of the time because of the high dmg that they deal. You'll find that once you've reached 40+, you'll be needed in parties or in duos to lvl up faster.

mage is the patient class. if u want instant gratification, go with a cleric. But if u wanna own in the long run stick with ur mage. Ur mage wont be that great in pvp till lvl 30. once u get mana burn, u'll own all the no stone duels. after u get fire ball, ur unstoppable ^^. i have a lvl 33 mage, and havent lost a fight with any1 my lvl.

Mages are not useless. lol how can u even say that =p. All my friends want to party me all the time because of how fast i kill. When u get into higher up KQs people pick mages in party first. Without mages its way harder to even finish a KQ.

Pfft, you're only useless if you suck! They'll (your teammates) get pissed off if you die too much, but if you stay live you can keep monsters off the cleric who could be rezzing the fighter. Monsters die incredibly fast with three mages in a pt, no matter how high they are so long as they can hit (we had 3 lvl 42-53 lvl mages with a cleric and fighter killing a Orc Captain in under ten seconds).

KQs depend on the KQ itself. Mages pull Mara and Marlone if the archers dunno what to do. Robo you're basically useless. MGH is impossible without TONS of mages. Slime is suckage for everyone. I just got to 46 so I haven't done Mini Dragon yet. However, with a buff, you can basically AoE in any KQ cause of the mass of clerics around to help you.

Also, did anyone else know that Mana Burn has a range of 15? I never knew that :P

Mana burn and purge have become my best friends in PVP. I literally get a giggle from them when I do them, and people don't realize I've done it and they die. XD I just get this funny image of "...o_o... why isn't my heal working?"

But on topic: Mages are most certainly NOT useless. As everyone else has pointed out, we're most sought after in grinding parties because of our damage. And if you're worrying about loosing life, instead of widdling points away on pumping end stats, when you should be pumping to your damage... buy green name equipment with end stats. It works like a dream in adding not only extra life, but extra defense. My mages def is nearly as good as a fighters that's my level, while I'm full int damage dealer.

Another tip: Don't rely on just cleric heals. It may be a bit costly, but pot and stone when you don't see a heal coming your way, and a mob is after you. You not only live longer, but you keep that exp instead of waiting for the monster to slam into you, only to end up dying. I've seen many from ALL classes do this :/

But yeah. You don't do so much damage in the beginning, because your int is very low. ^_^ Mages are worth the patience and struggle of getting to higher levels.

As a mage myself, being level 34, I can honestly say I'm not that useless! See, as you get higher, people quit being mages, so there aren't so many around. We're GREAT for DPS and whatnot. Believe me. Everyone wants mages as we become higher. I say we stick around until then, because without us, Fiesta would be a very, very drab place.
