Slimes in the Forest of Mist??

I don't know what it was from, but while travelling through the FoM today, we found a large, well, pile of slimes in the Forest of Mist. We started killing them, and they were respawning almost just as fast as we could kill them -and one person was a mage using an area attack, so it is not like we were all killing only 1 at a time. After a number of minutes of several players hacking at this slime hill, fewer and fewer would respawn. They did all finally die for good, but I am not sure exactly what happened to make them spawn there in the first place. I took a screenshot with the print screen key, but I don't know where to find it or how to upload it in here, sorry. Was this an error, a glitch, or some wierd event that happens on ocassion?

Initially I thought it was some kind of random event and there would be an incredible (incredible for slimes, anyways) amount of exp for killing them all -or something along those lines- kind of like treasure chests....but I guess it was just some weird glitch

Dakkon has a thing called a "Monster Machine" and he places it around in different areas.
That is what that is.
