Empty boxes in inventory

What are the empty boxes for in the inventory which go around the items which are worn(sword, armour etc)?

I'm assuming they're for special items, since the pets and cash shop clothing go there when equipped.

Those are slots for cashshop items and other special items, just as Suna said.
