View Full Version : Signature sizes

I've seen a steady incline of large signature. Now they aren't all that bad, but just sometimes there needs to be a limit. Large signatures that take a while to load. With a signature size there wouldn't be the problem of loading. Though it may not be in everyone's interest to have a maximum size.
If there was a maximum size what would be a good size that would fit everyone's preference?
I'd like to do some research on signatures before I post what I believe they should be, but please feel free to discuss about it. ^^
Just three different sizes I came up with:
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i224/dolphinz4eva14/sigsize2.png 700 X 450
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i224/dolphinz4eva14/Sigsize.png
600 X 450
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i224/dolphinz4eva14/sigsize3.png
400 X 200
Those are just sizes I through together. The first two are the actual two sizes I was thinking about, but the third is just what I think the size of an actually signature normally is. If their happens to be a limit then maybe one could go over 10 pixels? Gives a little extra space, but not to big of a gap.

I'd say limit image sizes to 200px high by 500px wide. Plenty of space for the arteest to make his/her point.

I agree. If you have a limit as to how much text you can have in a sig, there should be a limit for image sizes.

Honestly, I think sigs shouldn't be bigger than the one you have right now (MissusDolly's).
I personally prefer sigs that are half that size. That's what makes sigs cool in the first place. They're a SMALL place to say a LOT about yourself.
Everything else should just go in the profile. Or we can ask GMs/CLs to add a little sidebar for stuff like character information.

I favor a height of 300 pixels and width of 700 pixels. More then large enough for everyone, without being so large it affects the forum. Consider that size is not the only problem when loading a page, but also resolution. Also images are only loaded into browser cache once the first time you load the image, and that same image is used throughout your entire session. So at this size you can still have a very large sig without impacting load times or affecting the layout of the forum.
*edit* Also consider the fact that my sig is 557 pixels wide. It does not interfere with the forums average text width (ie: makes the width larger then normal.) and there is plenty of room for expansion. My sig is not very tall, only 133 pixels high, but gives you an idea of what a 300 pixel high sig would look like. My sig resolution on the other hand is very low. Unlike all the other users who use .jpg, I used .png. I obtain a higher picture quality with an image that is only 96 dpi and 24 bit. If I were to use jpeg, depending on the quality selected, I would have a significantly sloppier looking picture due to artifacts and blurred lines, with a much larger resolution. So remember, if you want a good looking faster loading picture...use .png!

Resolution matters much too because the picture could be huge and have the lowest resolution, but the smallest picture could have the highest resolution. .Png is a better quality with a low resolution to use.
Ralath I agree a signature is a place to make a statement, but with something smaller and not too large.
Posted three different sizes. I personally like the 2nd one due to it be large enough to allow room, but not too big to be annoying. Of course it's not just my opinion that matters.

that last one is about the biggest i think, because with peoples text (which should also have size limit on the font size) it will be ok, a lot of forums have a lot smaller size limits :)

Fiestafan is also debating on the size requirements for the sigs on the forums. We're leaning towards not larger than 500pixels.

Yes! I'm so sick of people *cough* Misses *cough* having signatures 5 times bigger than their posts!

I think the size of my signature should be the right one- then again, I'm probally biased =D

I agree that 200x500 is a good maximum size. I have seen some very creative, artistic signatures that size or (smaller) on this and on many other forums.

I got to say 600x450 or 650x500
the wigth is 800 maximum though
and 700 high.. more then that would just extend the forum / post

Some sigs are so big you dont only need to scroll up/down but also sideways, which make it harder to read a thread.
Anyways this issue is already being discussed by the CL's and Ouspark staff.
But this poll helps a lot so I think its important to keep it up :3
I think 700x400 should be the absolute max, but I personally like to see them even smaller. As you can see, my sig is big enough for a character to be in it, and mine is 607x370.

and mine is 607x370.
No, it's not. Your PICTURE is 607x370, but you have more than that in your signature. Your ACTUAL signature is more like 800 pixels tall.
People need to realize that your signature includes your picture AND text. People that have a 1024x768 picture and then 10 lines about their lvl 8 characters are actually taking up far more than the 1024 pixels of the screen shot.

We're talking about the image size, not the total sig.
Besides, my sig is total about 500-550 pixels tall, not 800.

Outspark already limits sig size to one image and 500 characters. This discussion is about the size of the image only.

Text is not an issue as Shahared stated due to being allowed 500 characters not including BBCode. Image size is the main issue. And seeing as how the poll is it does seem like there needs to be a limited, but a coming up with the perfect size is a problem.
Centrix I like the size of your sig because you don't have to scroll down much to see the picture and the written text in the post.
Personally I would like them at the 400 X 200 size, but I know that is not everyone's favorite since some like to make a statement with a larger signature, but having it so it extends the forums and having a long time to scroll is just a nuisance to deal with.
More opinions are highly welcomed. Also thank you Centrix for telling us that the CLs and the Staff are also discussing this topic. ^^ I hope that we can all come to a compromise soon.

I think the 400X 200 is enough to get the point across.

Agreed. From another game forum I used to visit 400X200 was their size. It got the point short and sweet as it should be. I've always liked that size too. It makes it easy enough to load everyone's signatures and no scrolling.

Why should there be a limit? I don't think it bothers that much, contrarely it's interesting to see what do people come with.

500x200 is the perfect size its small and perfect enough for some1 to be able 2 use their skillz

The thing is that when there is a full fledge screenshot in the signature it is annoying to have to load them and makes the page load even slower. With a limit then everyone has to meet that standard so as everyone can load pages quickly. It may not be everyone's best interest to have one, but it would be very nice to have one.

It may not be everyone's best interest to have one, but it would be very nice to have one.I wanted to agree with that statement until everyone started tossing around these tiny pixel sizes. Pretty much everyone on the forum with a cool sig would have to remove them if there was a size limit as small as is being suggested (400x200...?). Look at all the sigs the CLs and the GMs and the CSRs have...they all violate the tiny file sizes being suggested. I doubt the people who won the 'make a sig contest' for the GMs would be very happy. I still think sig size should be a flexible thing, and only outrageously large sigs should be blocked. This way if you want a small sig fine, and those who want larger ones can have them...within reason and the confines of the forums horizontal space.

Yes that is why I can see small sigs not working on this forum that is why I lean more towards the second of the examples I have given since it should be enough room to work with, but not outrageously huge. ^^

No one else has anything more to add? If not then by the poll I can conclude that a signature size is needed. The next goal would to be a size where a good majority can agree on.
