View Full Version : Another Cleric Thread

I just want to confirm some things I heard on clerics and maybe dispel some rumors at the same time, so here's another thread to talk about things.
*1) Clerics are the most popular class
I'd love to see a chart of how many people are actually clerics, but on day 1 of CB2 I saw nothing but mages and archers outside of Roumen. Aside from the occassional KQ game, I see myself as the minority as a cleric. If anything, we're just as common as the other classes.
2) Clerics are overpowered
Well, this is a biggie. The two main points I saw for this arguement were that they can heal and that they had invincibility (which was mostly something people complained about in pvp). Invincibility got nerfed. Big time, I can guess. It works for about 8 seconds with a 2 minute cooldown. I don't have it, but I'd find it pretty pointless. Oh, and we can heal and attack, which makes us really Paladins at heart. But if any of you cared to notice, everyone else's dps is vastly higher than ours unless we poured every point in there. And we can tank because we can heal, but without a particular build we wouldn't have the hp for the most important things to tank. People complain about the support class being able to hold their own in a fight, but we barely do. It takes forever to kill something with a mace.
3) Clerics are so good a mistake in support must be the players
This is more of a complaint more than anything, but non-clerics need to understand the concept of cooldowns. Heal at its best has a cooldown of 2.1s (un-empowered is a whole 3.0s), which is more than enough for someone to get killed in if they're biting off more than they can chew. If you die because your HP dropped in a fraction it's not always because the healer wasn't healing you. The same goes for Revive. It has a 30s cooldown. We know you have a mere 2 minutes left with us, but dems the breaks.
Well that's complaints and imbalance issues, now a question
4) Mace vs Hammer
I've only seen a few High Clerics still carrying around their mace, but I'm considering using one myself come Lv30. What's the true advantages one has over the other? Because on paper the hammer looks a lot better for a fraction of a second delay.
End Rants. Discuss away.*

1) I've definitely seen more ranged attackers than clerics so far. Chalk that one up to the 'ranged KS' advantages and the generally easier workload. Clerics have a lot to keep an eye on in groups,ESPECIALLY since clerics can hold their own against some enemies and aren't the typical 'weak cloth armored' healer class of other MMORPG games.
2) Clerics aren't overpowered. We have heal for a reason; non-fighter armor and non-fighter melee dps. We*MAY survive longer than a pressured fighter with a third form of healing available to us,but we can't exactly deal out fighter-like damage ourselves.
Regards PvP,in a fight between a fighter and a cleric,I'd dare to say the fighter would win more often than not because they can do high melee damage very quickly and have stuns available. Basically, the fighter will out-damage our healing/HP stones & pots at some point. They do have the extra armor/attack after all.
If anything, the ranged classes are usually the most overpowered in PvP. So MAGES I think you will be the 'overpowered' PvP class of Fiesta before long. I've already seen one mage act as a 'battle mage' in a KQ using hp scrolls to boost their hp to a decent amount. Clerics can't damage mages (or archers)*if they can't get near them....
Clerics may be able to 'escape' PvP death easier due to healing, but that by no means ensures we can effectively 'kill' someone on our own. When you combine cleric healing with another class acting as the damage-dealer however, that's when we become good at PvP; supporting!
Regards PvE,clerics may well be the best for soloing monsters due to their survivability, and not because of their damage/armor.
3) In groups, clerics have a vital role to fill*under 'heal management'.*But this does mean a lot of work for the cleric class in group PvE situations; sure, fighters have to manage 'aggro management',but clerics have equally a tricky job to perform.
The support isn't necessarily bad; heal has a cooldown as said by the OP. Remember folks, unlike previous games you have a low-cooldown supply of HP stones & potions available at any given time. If you don't think a cleric can heal you in any 1 second, use them willingly. (HP stones probably preferred for higher hp...)
Also, sometimes clerics will lag (as will everyone else, probably) so try to account for this as*they are trying to heal you,and if*they do lag*they will press the heal button on a person being damaged so that even through the lag you will receive at least one heal before they resume normal play free of lag again.
4) Am only a level 15 cleric myself,no information on hammers or that clerics got a choice of weapons later on in the game. If the hammer is 2h,I'll presume it's a trade-off of damage for no shield. In which case I will be sticking to my mace,as:
-I'm content being a healer cleric in group situations.
-I feel the cleric needs all the armor they can get; I'll happily trade damage for that extra bit of shield armor/block chance so I can use my healing survivability to solo monsters.
If hammer is 1-handed though like the mace, beats me.

Both weapons for Cleric are 1 handed. But one has better attack while the other has a better aim.
Also it appears this isn't the first game Sirril has played a healer.

I've never played a pure support healer before. I've played a WOW druid to some extent and an Assist on FlyFF. And I've certainly played a fair share of MMO's. (3 years now) But I usually play as a 'rogue' style class if one is available, ever since I fell in love with playing a WOW rogue. :D
The one time I did try being a 'pure support healer' was a test realm priest on WOW. I thought healing would be simple; it wasn't to be. I struggled with 'healing management' and my party died to the first instance boss. If I have played a healer class before,it's one that can also fight well in melee like the FlyFF assist or Fiesta's own cleric. Never have played one of those 'cloth-wearing' types that can barely kill anything solo and need other people to gain their battle xp mostly, but are excellent support.
Having said that,I do find that being a group healer in Fiesta to be relatively easy going....SO FAR. I've already been called a 'good cleric' in one King Slime KQ,so I must be doing something right. But then my mentality as a cleric in groups from day one is "stand back and heal".
Needless to say, clerics have this hard job of 'healing management',and after that WOW priest experience I understand it all the more so. I could probably never be a pure support cleric; I'd need some battle ability to solo monsters when I'm not in a group.
But I do ok as a Fiesta cleric. :D

I really look at the games cleric in the same stance as a WoW Paladin or RO Priest. Un Parelleled Soloability with hard to beat Group Utility. Sure we Can heal. but Group Utility Is where we really shine. We have Mid Level damage and Defense, But we can buff ourselves and our allies, heal if needed, and even if it's minimal we can if necessary push out some damage.
I think the Hardest game to be a solid Healer for was FFXI i mean i couldn't even blink in combat after level 30 for fear that the mob would obliterate someone.

I picked a hammer at level 20, and then consequently destroyed 7 of them in enchant attempts, so I decided to try the mace out.
I didn't time it with a stopwatch but at level 24 (when*I finally tested) the mace hit much faster than the .2 second difference accounted for, and in fact end up killing monsters faster. Due to enemies with armor and the like, the damage was very close between the two with my all-STR build.
I'd go mace from level 20 if given the choice again. it might be that you have 2 ranks of the Mace Mastery skill already at that level.

Well i agree with Sirril, clerics are made to heal hence the long life. I'm lvl 24 and i can tank sometimes cause i heal my self but i run out of SP quickly even with max mana decrease points.
*As for hammer or mace. Hammer does more dmg then mace but is 0.2 hits per second lower. If you can enhance your weapon i would say which ever one is enhanced higher would be better. you got to pick between damage or speed :P

I may have worked this out wrong, but wouldn't enhancements have more of an effect on the faster weapon? To use simple numbers, +2 damage on a 2-second weapon comes out to +1 dps, while that same +2 on a 1-second weapon is +2 dps. So if you enhance each weapon the same amount, the faster one should show more of a difference.
