Is there any factor to whether a monster will automatically attack you on sight? while I've noticed that most monsters don't attack me, there are some that do, such as speedy slimes or boss-level monsters. Or is it specific to each monster?

Once you hit lvl 20, I think all monsters will attack you. That's just cus they're aggressive. Before you get to lvl 20, I think the only monsters that will attack you are monsters in KQ's, SpeedySlimes, and chief monsters (monsters that only respawn after a certain amount of time).
Hope it helps. ;)

Hmm... yeah, I think that speedy slimes, all elite/chief/hero monsters (there is a little circle beside the monster's hp bar when you target it, move the pointer over it to see its type) and any monster (besides Mara Pirates, unless Marines are around) including and after the Sea of Greed are aggresive.
There is one monster way later in the Forest of Slumber that is non-aggresive, the Trumpy Guard or something... but that's the only one I've seen recently.
And of course monsters way below you will eventually not be aggresive towards you, but by then whats the point of going to those areas besides gathering quests, you know?

Lower level monsters, i.e imps, slimes, mushrooms will not aggro you. Other mobs that are higher level will, just about everything in FoM will sans mini greenkies, phinoes and I think ratmen/boars (havn't been that low for a while). Also once you're 10 levels above the level that the mob turned gray too you, it won't aggro you anymore.
