Well first off welcome to the forums and game.^^
The best starter character would probally be neophyte if you are new to MMO's, but choose what ever you prefer close range with power and defense you'd want squire. Fast attack with many cool skills choose Neo. Long range bombers I would suggest apprentice and for healer choose acolyte.
The Neophytes and Acos have branch classes that change at level 45. Neos have archers which are long range and do really good damage and Acolytes can change to disicple which is a fighter/healer.
For stats I would suggest looking in the section that would pertain to the class you chose. Post here if you choose to be a squire.^^
Basically try and make friends with good people which will take some of the stress off you when you don't want to grind you can just chat.
Try to explore get to know where the NPCs are, and what they do.(Most are just of for quests)
Hope this helps if you have any questions just post a thread in the right section or use the search button first to see if you can find what you are looking for.^^

The best starter character depends on how you want to play. Some classes keep the monsters far away while others are right in their face. When you level up to 16 you should see if you like playing like that or not.
Definitely listen to what the guy above me said and the best tip I can give you is to make sure to pay attention to those starting quests. It will give you an idea of what is in Brynhilld and some of the hotkeys. If you have any questions beyond that you should check the forums for information.
